REPOST: Black Disability History Talk: 504 and Beyond
Dr. Sami Schalk: Disability Politics w/ Black Panther Party
Sami Schalk, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison will be speaking on campus on Thursday February 23rd at 4:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Room 132. To RSVP for this in-person event, click on the website button below.
Drawing from the book, Black Disability Politics, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.
This lecture is organized by the Dresher Center for the Humanities.
Biography: Dr. Sami Schalk (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction (Duke 2018) and Black Disability Politics (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in TONE Madison. Dr. Schalk identifies as a fat, Black, queer, disabled femme and a pleasure activist.
Co-sponsored by the Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (I3B); and the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services.

UMBC’s Christopher Slaughter, engineering student with health equity focus, wins prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Christopher Slaughter ’23, M31 computer engineering, has won a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue graduate work at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom next fall. Slaughter is the fifth student from UMBC to be recognized with the prestigious award, established by the University of Cambridge in 2000 with a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

processes have been seen as manipulation of symbolic, mental
representations, taking place disjoined from the body. This dualist
Cartesian approach characterized much of twentieth-century thought and
is still taken for granted by many people today. Language, too, has for a
long time been treated across scientific domains as a system operating
largely independently from perception, action, and the body
(articulatory-perceptual organs notwithstanding). Yet, the disembodied
perspective is inaccurate for numerous reasons, which will be discussed
addressing the issue of the indissoluble link between cognition,
language, body, and environment in understanding and learning. The talk
will conclude with implications and suggestions for pedagogy, relevant
for disciplines as diverse as instruction in language, mathematics, and
sports.
Michał B. Paradowski is a
professor and teacher trainer at the Institute of Applied Linguistics,
University of Warsaw and a research and language teaching consultant.
His interests include second language acquisition and instruction,
bi-/multilingualism, psycholinguistics, cognitive science and
educational psychology. He is currently PI for the projects How Peer
Interaction Mediates Second and Third Language Acquisition and Language
Learners’ Perception of Online vs Face-to-face Learning Effectiveness.

three years as an online event, URCAD will return to in-person this Spring.
Join us on April 12, 2023, in the University Center and other venues around
campus to see hundreds of research posters, oral presentations, dance
performances, films, interactive games, and much more, all presented by UMBC’s
undergraduate students. This annual event brings together researchers and
artists from all disciplines and showcases the projects that UMBC students have
