ProAesthetics: Changing How We View Prosthetic Function

Abstract:
When it comes to functionality, much progress has been made in mechanical and bionic prosthetic limb capabilities but less work has been done in improving the available cosmetic options for amputees. Individuals who have limb deficiencies found that they often experienced distress or a disconnect with their prosthetic limb due to its appearance and some eventually abandoned their limbs due to this disconnect (Sansoni, 2015). This research project showed how the involvement of the amputee in the cosmetic design of their limb influenced how they perceive their limb and gave it a renewed purpose outside of mechanical constraints of function, which emphasized the need for co-designing in assistive technology. Five lower-limb amputees were interviewed for a case study regarding their personal cosmetic desires for their limbs. Data from these interviews shows a variety of aesthetic interests as well as a varied understanding of what is available cosmetically for lower-limb prosthetics.

GSA Executive Council Elections Will Happen in May!

The Graduate Student Association is seeking applications for executive council members who will serve throughout the next academic year from June, 2022 to May, 2023.
The following positions will be elected on May 11th, at 6:00 PM. Candidates must attend the election to be considered.

Chair of the Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee
Chair of the Graduate Experience, Achievements & Research Symposium
Chair of the Legislative Concerns Committee
Chair of the Graduate Student Success Committee
Pairs of candidates who whish to be considered as co-chairs or co-executives should fill out one
application for the desired position.
All executive council members are expected to have an active role supporting all the work of the GSA including Graduate Senate Meetings, graduate student events and graduate student advocacy. More specific expectations of each role can be found here:

Autism - from Awareness to Acceptance
People of all identities around the world live, go to school and go to work with the neurodiversity that Autism brings to a world, often with struggle and difficulty. UMBC's students, faculty, staff, and visitors have this neurodiversity as well. While many learn and work well with best practices and accessible design, students (both undergraduate and graduate), as well as faculty and staff who experience disability with a diagnosed health condition (which includes autism) may seek accommodations through
Student Disability Services (link) for academic programs, as well as
work-related accommodations via Accessibility & Disability Services.
National Deaf History Month
National Deaf History Month runs from March 13-April 15th - and had its beginning in 1996 when two Deaf employees at Martin Luther King Library in DC began teaching their colleagues American Sign Language. (UMBC has American Sign Language courses throughout the year, and Sign of Life is the student organization for people who are learning/know ASL) April 8, 1864 was when Gallaudet University-the world's first institution of higher education for the Deaf and hard of hearing, April 15th, 1817 is when the American School for the Deaf - the first public school of its kind - opened.
Recent history includes the
2021 movie CODA winning Best Picture and Deaf actor Troy Kotsur, winning Best Actor at the Oscars, among other Oscars that night and SAG awards for best cast. Marlee Matlin, who won her first Oscar in 1987, played a pivotal role in advocating for a predominantly Deaf cast. Perhaps some of UMBC's students and alumni will be influenced by this history-making, if-you-can-see-it-you-can-be-it moment? Students, faculty and staff can learn more about

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
This month we highlight awareness about sexual assault - which informs community safety and health at UMBC. ADS and SDS are acutely aware of how this harmful and criminal behavior disproportionately affects people with disabilities. Participating in the campus climate survey supports the campus awareness and training and response efforts. UMBC Office of Equity and Inclusion's survey is now open. You can access the online survey here and it will be open until Monday, April 25, 2022 and will take about 15-25 minutes to complete. This survey is anonymous and confidential; only after completing the Campus Climate Survey, is there a voluntary prompt for a drawing.
Content note: This survey asks some questions about personal experiences with sexual and interpersonal violence. Some of the language used in this survey is explicit and direct, and may be triggering or uncomfortable for some participants. Information on how to get help, if you need it, appears before and after the survey and is available at any time on the OEI website.

Project Snowman: A Snow Rolling Adventure Game
Presenters:Evan McRae, Jacob Pickholtz, Noah Reardon, Shane Taylor
Mentor: Marc Olano (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering)
Abstract:
A game where the player takes the role of a snowman’s head and rolls around various levels in search of the rest of its body. Like a rolling snowball, the snowman’s head grows in size as it rolls on snowy ground and eventually can become big enough to destroy obstacles in the environment. Players must navigate their surroundings and reach the snowman body at the end in enough time to complete each level, earning extra points along the way for the amount of destruction they cause. This game was developed using the Unity game engine and required a collaborative effort to learn the coding techniques that allow the player character to move, grow larger, and interact with the game world. Development also required the ability to design a functioning user interface, knowledge of 3D modeling tools to build game objects and environment pieces, and the creation of a system to implement smooth-transitioning background music into the game, which itself was composed specifically for the project.

Towson United Clinic Program Directors Positions Available
Boys Recreational Soccer program
The Towson United Boys
Recreational Soccer program is seeking UMBC physical education students to serve
as Program Directors to re-design and facilitate our U4/U5 Fall Clinic.
This is a unique opportunity
for undergraduate students to use their academic training, practical experience
delivering physical education programming, passion, and creativity to design a
best practices physical education and play experience. The team of Program Directors will have the
chance to imprint their signature by re-building a program from the ground
up. Mature, responsible self-starters
with documented follow-through are encouraged to apply.
Overview
Towson United's Under-6 Clinic Division (U6 Clinic) is an
introduction to soccer. Each
session consists of a 30-minute practice & drills designed to
give all players maximum time engaged with their own ball followed by a
30-minute 4v4 game. Wins and Losses are not recorded, and no
standings are kept.
2022 Schedule
The 2022 Season begins in early September and runs for 8
weeks.
Parents help to facilitate the program.
