The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.

By providing scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering, the Goldwater Foundation is helping ensure that the U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the Nation needs in these critical fields. Over its 30-year history, Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to thousands of undergraduates, many of whom have gone on to win other prestigious awards like the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship, Rhodes Scholarship, Churchill Scholarship and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship that support our Scholars’ graduate school work. Today, Goldwater alumni can be found conducting research that is helping defend the Nation, finding cures for catastrophic diseases and teaching future generations of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

This is the second year in a row UMBC students have won 4 scholarships, the most available.

Maintaining Positive Mental Health In Nursing Home Caregivers

Presenter: Laura-Catherine Bando

Mentor: Louise Murray (Aging Studies)

Abstract:

According to the National Center of Health Statistics (2019), approximately1.3 million older adults live in nursing homes in the US. Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, provide 24/7 medical care for those who need short term rehabilitation and those for whom the nursing home is their permanent home due to their level of health needs (National Institute on Aging, 2017). With many residents residing for a decade or more in the same community, relationships form between staff and residents (Ådland et al., 2021). Consequently, feelings of extreme grief and distress may be expressed by staff when residents pass away and the repetition of loss can take a major toll on mental wellbeing, due to a lack of opportunity to step back and grieve (Ådland et al.,2021). A review of the literature exploring the impact of grief and loss, following the passing of nursing home residents, on the staff who care for them will be provided. Recommendations for practice will be made and a strategy presented that can be implemented within the long term healthcare field to support formal caregivers when coping with the loss of residents with whom they may have formed deep connections.

Abstract:

The presence of political debate and activism at dining tables, conference rooms, and other traditionally apolitical spaces has burgeoned in recent history. The Black church has been one of these politically transformed spaces that have been impactful in promoting movements around political ideologies. The Black body is political, and so are all cultural and religious practices from that experience. This research uses ethnographic and choreographic practices to explore themes of embodied Blackness, relational power, and institutionally-bound socio-political obligations. This research considers the question: how do congregants within Black Religious Institutions identify with their role in the political landscape that has led to change in diplomacy, legislation, awareness and transparency, civic engagement, and rights expansion -- even on a microscale. Through collecting and interpreting oral histories within Black Religious Institutions, these stories and interactions informed a new contemporary choreographic work and an inquiry into choreographic methodologies foregrounding Africanist movement expression and values.

REPOST: Ramadan

<Tagline>Supporting Students, Staff and Faculty During Ramadan</Tagline>

Cross-promotion from this original event link.

Ramadan
is a month dedicated to fasting, spirituality & worship, and charity
& community. Ramadan is expected to begin Saturday, April 2. The
last day of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, is expected to begin on the evening of
May 1. During Ramadan, Muslims around the world fast during daylight
hours and increase in their spiritual devotional acts such as prayer
and giving to charity. It is the holiest month of the Muslim year and
follows the lunar calendar. During this month, no food or drink
(including water) may be taken from dawn to dusk Worshippers eat a
pre-dawn light meal, called suhoor. After dusk, Muslims break the fast
with an evening meal called iftar.

Given
Ramadan's placement during the academic year, this will impact Muslim
students, staff, and faculty in various ways. In addition to being aware
of this religious observance, you can support members of the Muslim
community this month in the following ways:

Understand that Ramadan is a time of spiritual cleansing and reflection.

Acknowledge Ramadan and Eid by wishing folks well.

Be
respectful of prayer times - many people are more observant during
Ramadan and therefore may need to leave class, meetings, or other
obligations to pray for approximately ten minutes.

Ramadan includes evening programs that will require folks to be out late - be understanding and empathetic.

Check-in folks' mental health and overall well-being.

For
more information on how to support the Muslim community this Ramadan,
check out the attached handout from the Islamic Center at New York
University and head over to the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Towson, MD!

Ramadan Observance at UMBC

Ramadan
Observance is being hosted by the Muslim Student Association. From
April 2 through May 2, 2022, the Center for Well-Being hours will be
temporarily expanded to 4:30 am - 1:00 am. The Gathering Space corridor
(rooms 109 and 105) will be accessible during these times, but the
conference rooms and the second floor will not be open.

Participating
students are expected to ensure that the space is left clean and
organized, and all materials and supplies are put neatly away so that
the space can be ready for use during regular business hours. This
includes ensuring that ALL food products have been appropriately
disposed of and cleaned. Participating students are expected to follow
the student code of conduct, and respect the space and property of i3b
and the Center for Well-Being. For more information, please contact the
    Muslim Student Association at umbcmsa@gmail.com.
