Dr. Francis Hult Addresses United Nations Multilingualism and International Cooperation Dr. Francis Hult spoke at a special session about enhancing international cooperation at the United Nations on Friday.  Addressing the Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, and Member States, he talked about the need to use multilingualism to advance multilateralism and global solidarity.  

While in New York, he also met with Ambassador Ifigeneia Kontoleontos, Permanent Observer of L'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie to the UN to discuss the advancement of multilingualism in the practice of international relations.

This event will be taking place on March 16th, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

The semester is flying by, Spring Break is almost upon us! We at PROMISE realize that we haven't had an opportunity this semester to gather around, drink coffee, and eat donuts with you all! As such, we've decided to host an informal gathering at Commons 329 and hope you will join us. We will provide the coffee and donuts to share and invite you to stop to say hi and catch up with us and other graduate students.

We (Dr. Robin Cresiski and Yarazeth Medina) will be available to talk about the Grad Student and Postdoc Development Office (GSPD), PROMISE, the calendar of professional development events, our latest Netflix Binges, and hopefully, create even more of an opportunity for you to meet fellow grad students in other departments. We would love to help you develop a deeper sense of community here on campus. If you just feel like stopping for free coffee and a donut, you are more than welcome to do so as well!

It's that time of the year and Quadmania is right around the corner! If you are part of a student organization, a personal band/dance group or have a solo act and would be interested in performing during Quadmania, make sure to sign up using the link below. The performances will take place on Friday, April 22nd with  a tentative start time of 5/6pm. The deadline to sign up is March 28th.

Please join us on March 16 at 12pm in the Dresher Center Conference Room to welcome Dr. Asha Nadkarni, who is visiting UMBC as part of the Eminent Scholar Mentor Program. 

"‘A Queerness of No Return’?: Competing Diasporic Imaginaries in Shani Mootoo’s He Drown She in the Sea.” 

Asha Nadkarni is Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research and teaching interests include postcolonial literature and theory, transnational feminist theory, US empire studies, and Asian American studies, with an emphasis on the literatures and cultures of the South Asian diaspora. Her book, Eugenic Feminism: Reproductive Nationalism in the United States and India (University of Minnesota Press, 2014), traces connections between U.S. and Indian nationalist feminisms to suggest that both launch their claims to feminist citizenship based on modernist constructions of the reproductive body as the origin of the nation. She is working on a second book project, tentatively titled From Opium to Outsourcing, that focuses on representations of South Asian labor in a global context.
