As undergraduate and graduate student populations have become more and more diverse, institutions of higher education are getting much more proactive in their goals to hire faculty that are prepared to be mentors, researchers, and teachers who are inclusive and culturally competent (about time, right?). As such, many academic jobs require a Diversity Statement or a Commitment to Diversity Statement. This is a way for applicants to demonstrate they have the commitments and capacities to contribute to the institution’s goals of diversity, inclusion, and equity via their work (personally and professionally) and their lived experiences. 

Come learn more about how to craft these statements, how they are often scored, and ways you can do additional work NOW before the job market to demonstrate the values you have. 

Participation in this event counts towards your CIRTL certification.

These programs are designed for skill-building, experiential learning, campus connections, and overall student development. Whether you're a student looking to get involved, become a leader, refine your skills, or add something extra to your résumé-- check us out! Below you will find a summary of each program, registration information, program dates and hyperlinks to event pages for more information:


LEADERSHOPS
The Leadershops series consists of workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and student leaders. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.

The following are the fall 2021 Leadershops sessions that are being offered for students to register through myUMBC:

The LeadHERship Problem - Tuesday, September 21st at 12:00pm
This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.

The Author of Your Leadership Story - Wednesday, October 20th at 12:00pm
The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.

Going Farther Together - Thursday, November 18th at 12:00pm
Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.


LEADERSHIP BLUEPRINT
This program is about getting more out of, rather than cramming more into, UMBC. This 5 week program helps first year, sophomore, and new transfer students craft a more fulfilling college experience by sharing practical tools and ideas and relating them back to their leadership and involvement plans for UMBC. Topics include exploring your interests, finding your place at UMBC, designing plans for your leadership and involvement experience, and so much more. This seminar incorporates small group discussion, in-class activities, field exercises, and personal reflection.

There are two cohorts available starting the week of October 5th and ending the week of November 2nd, 2021:

  • Tuesdays 10:00am – 11:30am
  • Oct 5th, Oct 12th, Oct 19th, Oct 26th, Nov 2nd
  • In-person meetings at The Commons

True Grit Cohort
  • Wednesdays 1:00pm – 2:30pm
  • Oct 6th, Oct 13th, Oct 20th, Oct 27th, Nov 3rd
  • In-person meetings at The Commons

Chip Cohort
  • Thursdays 3:00pm – 4:30pm
  • Oct 7th, Oct 14th, Oct 21st, Oct 28th, Nov 4th
  • Online meetings via Webex

To participate, you must be available to attend all of the sessions of your selected section of Leadership Blueprint. Registration closes at 11:59pm on Monday, September 27th, 2021.



EMERGING LEADERS
Emerging Leaders is a day long experience for students who are interested in developing their leadership capacity and learning more about the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development. SCM at it’s core, approaches leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change.

The Social Change Model sees leadership as purposeful, collaborative, and a values-driven process. Titles or positions are not needed in order to be a leader. Leaders work to improve the groups and communities they are part of. Through this approach, anyone can be a leader, because “leaders” are those who want to make a difference. This kind of collaborative process means that groups must have trust, which requires that group members act in ways that are consistent with their own beliefs and values as well as the group’s goals. Food will be provided at this event.

This program will take place in-person at The Commons 331 on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021 from 10:30am – 3:30pm. 

Registration closes on Friday, October 1st at 12:00pm. 



MULTICULTURAL LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE (MLE) MINI-SERIES
The purpose of the Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify with diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. 

This year's MLE Mini-Series theme is Deconstructing Grit and Greatness! Below you will find the event links to the three sessions we will be offering this semester. All meetings will be done in-person at The Commons. Students are welcome to sign-up for any or all available session(s):

Reconstructing Resilience - September 30th, 11am - 12:15pm
Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach in relation to resiliency.

Exploring Empathy and Giving Grace - October 26th, 1pm - 2:15pm
Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach by engaging in inter-cultural dialogue and utilizing emotional intelligent capacities.

Decoding Inclusive Excellence - December 7th, 4pm - 5:15pm
Participants will connect their understanding of our campus community and tools learned in order to collectively co-create a new definition for Inclusive Excellence.

September 15th marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.  September 15, 16 and 18 celebrate independence for at least six of these countries - which is valued and celebrated especially by community members and luminaries with disabilities.  Respect Ability shares their robust list of luminaries here - and while it does mention Frida Kahlo, an artist who contracted polio at age 6  and survived a horrific bus accident at 18, taking up painting during her recovery, and leaving an indelible mark on the world - other luminaries include:

Mexican writer and activist Gabriela Brimmer whose life is chronicled in the 1987 film, Gaby: A True Story

Maria Soledad Cisternas - Chilean lawyer and disability activist who was involved with drafting the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and chaired that UN Committee, and served as Special Envoy.

Tony Coelho Congressman from California and primary author and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and celebrated its 31st Anniversary with President Biden.

Eva Middleton of Belize brought disability awareness and justice to her home country of Belize.

Vik Pineda brings activism and advocacy and awareness from his work on the west coast.

Annie Segerra (also known as Annie Elainey) cites Frida Kahlo as a huge influence and has her YouTube channel here 

Lizzie Velasquez 's Dare to Be Kind anti-bullying campaign was informed by her lived experience with her peers and online.

On Tuesday, October 19th from Noon to 1:00 PM, The Faculty Development Center is hosting a virtual discussion regarding the implications, inquiries, and insecurities of a "return to normal" and would like to invite CIRTL Graduate students to attend. Below is a snippet of the content of the discussion: 

"This session in the Diverse Classroom Series asks participants to reflect on the ways the "normal" college classroom in 2019 may have oppressed our diverse student body. Particiaptns will gain perspective on how the sudden universal need for remote learning "evened the playing field" for some learners, especially those with intersectional identities. Finally, this session will encourage participants to be cognizant of how they can challenge the meaning of returning to normal for their classroom(s)."

Internships with Strong Schools Maryland General Overview Candidacy for an internship with Strong Schools Maryland is indicative of an individual’s personal commitment to the attainment of educational equity for students, as well as to building power with school communities. An internship experience with Strong Schools Maryland will put participants in spaces to learn from a large swath of intergenerational partners and experts from around the state. It is an exciting opportunity to complicate everything “known” about public education, public policy, power building, and politics.

For Partner Organizations Strong Schools Maryland seeks to contribute to the capacity of our partner organizations and the communities they serve as a routine aspect of working together (i.e., offering resume critiques, mock interviews, speaking engagements, informal training, etc).

Internship Opportunities

Candidates should be available for about 20 hours each week. Each internship runs for 12-15 weeks with the possibility of some irregular evenings/weekend hours, particularly during the
Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Internship.

1. Policy Advocacy and Organizing Internship: Fall Semester
Description: Strong Schools Maryland Policy Advocacy and Organizing Interns will work
under the guidance of staff to support policy advocacy and organizing initiatives.

Objectives & Learning:
● Policy Advocacy (7 hours/week)
○ Monitor policy implementation in specified region of Maryland
○ Contribute to development of state legislative agenda
○ Attend meetings
○ Support staff in meeting with elected officials

● Organizing (10 hours/week)
○ Lead a Team of 10 on home campus
○ Meet with Team Leaders and allies across the state to determine
policy needs
○ Aid in Team Leader recruitment and training
○ Support team members in navigating the General Assembly’s
processes to make their voices heard

● Nonprofit Administration (3 hours/week)
○ Support organizational systems-building and maintenance
○ Administrative duties as assigned

2. Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Internship: Spring Semester
Description: Strong Schools Maryland Legislative Advocacy and Organizing Interns will work under the guidance of staff to support legislative advocacy and organizing
initiatives.

Objectives & Learning:

● Legislative Advocacy (10 hours/week)
○ Support Strong Schools Maryland’s efforts in the Maryland
General Assembly
○ Conduct research, including monitoring hearings
○ Track legislation aligned with state legislative priority agenda,
draft and submit testimony
○ Accompany staff meeting with elected officials

● Organizing (7 hours/week)
○ Lead a Team of 10 on home campus
○ Assist with communicating information about the progression of
priority legislation to Team Leaders and allies
○ Coordinate testimony
○ Execute legislative strategy

● Nonprofit Administration (3 hours/week)
○ Support organizational systems-building and maintenance
○ Administrative duties as assigned

Hello Graduate Students, 

 

If your organization has not yet registered for this academic year, please fill out this form below to register your group (whether it be a new or existing group). The deadline to register a GSO for the 2021-2022 academic year is Monday, September 20th.

 

Training for GSOs will be happening on Tuesday September 21st at 11am and Thursday September 23rd at 3pm. These trainings provide the opportunity for GSO members to understand how GSOs operate, how they interact with the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and allow for students to ask questions about funding, hosting events and other important topics. Please fill out this registration form to attend either session. If you cannot attend either, please note that in the form so that another session time can be added.
