Researcher of the Week: Niara Comrie

Meet Niara,
She is a
Mathematics major and an independent researcher. Besides conducting research, Niara is an advocate for the research process. Her advice to students new to research is to dive in, "
...don't be intimidated. The best way to learn is by doing." She did not have any experience with 3D printing prior to working at the PAD lab. Now, she has several publications and is teaching professionals how to 3D print in their field. She adds "
There are no limitations to what you can do."
The goal of her research is to use three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to empower therapists to create customizable and inexpensive assistive technology for patients. Therapists can use medical expertise to tailor adaptations to existing assistive technologies, but current efforts to customize assistive technology are limited to materials like tape, clay, Velcro, and foam padding. She plans to familiarize medical professionals with 3D printing to make highly specific modifications to assistive devices and provide them with software to make 3D models.

URA Workshop with Dr. Blaney, Dr. Forestiere and Dr. Peralta
Undergraduate Research Awards provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they will remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.
An informal workshop with current and past URA mentors Dr. Lee Blaney of the Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering department, Dr. Carolyn Forestiere of the Political Science department and Dr. Luis Pinet-Peralta of the Health Administration and Public Policy department. At least one or two current or former URA Scholars will also be in attendance to discuss their experience in the program.

Researcher of the Week:Himadri Patel
Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!
Meet Himadri,
She is a double major (Biological Sciences & Interdisciplinary Studies) and an URA Scholar. She is also a Teaching Assistant for the Chemistry Discovery Center and a Tutor for the Learning Resources Center. If research is in your future, Himadri recommends getting started in the process early on so that you have enough time to get involved in a lab, learn and discover if research is your passion. Her future plans are to pursue a career as a physician, possibly specializing in the field of Neurology.
Her research involves in examining stress-induced analgesia (SIA), the phenomenon in which exposure to intense stress suppresses the perception of pain. From an evolutionary perspective, SIA is part of the adaptive fight-or-flight response mediated by the sympathetic nervous system that enhances an individual’s ability to survive a crisis situation; pain suppression is a critical component of this response as it enables individuals to escape a threat even if they have sustained an injury.

Researcher of the Week: Caitlin Stone

Meet Caitlin,
She is an
Asian Studies major and an independent researcher. In the future, she plans to pursue a graduate degree in environmental studies. Her advice to future researchers is that you should be ready to dedicate much of your time to your topic. It may be cliché, but you have to eat, sleep, and breathe your topic. Your friends should be able to support you when you rant on and on and on about it. Most of all, you must love it. If you don’t enjoy your research, then you won’t want to push through any issues that presents themselves along the way.
Her research investigated the Buddhist practice of fangsheng; the process of releasing captive animals to obtain good karma. This implementation of fangsheng has introduced large quantities of non-native species to China’s environment and heavily influenced the likelihood of a non-native species becoming invasive, which has caused numerous problems to the ecological cycle. She will then analyze the impact of fangsheng and proposes solutions to resolve these issues.

Researcher of the Week: Nicholas Vaccaro

Meet Nick,
He is a Biochemistry major and a URA Scholar. He is a real proponent in developing future researchers. He advises, "If you are really interested in the work you are doing and want the project to succeed, then observing and looking into work that others have done in your field is a truly great thing to do. It will give you great insight not only on your own project, but also on the general knowledge associated with the field in which you are working." Nicholas would ultimately like to become a biomedical researcher to assist on developing cures and vaccines for infectious diseases.
His research will explore the microscopic world of Nanoscience. Electrochemical aptamer-based (E-AB) sensors can be utilized to detect a multitude of different target molecules in a sample. Current methods, however, are limited to ensemble measurements of a large number of target molecules. Conversely, specific single molecule sensing at low detection limits represents a highly sensitive method of detection of analytes in a sample. In this project, I aim to detect Immunoglobulin E (IgE), a protein that is involved with the immune response in the human body, with specific single molecule sensitivity.

Meet Isabel,
She is a
Global Studies major (with a
Spanish Minor), and a Winter researcher. In her free time, Isabel is the
director and founder of the Reach Initiative, a mentorship
program that assists Baltimore high school women who have an interest in the STEM fields. She is also the Director of SGA’s Service and Community Outreach
department as well as the Vice-President of UMBC’s all-female acapella group, the Stilettos.
Her research investigates Fair Trade through a feminist economics lens to see whether it truly can aid in preventing gender violence and discrimination in Latin America. Last winter, she traveled to Honduras where she visited various coffee plantations and “fincas” and interviewed about 25 women about working conditions. Her next step in the process is to transcribing, translating, and analyzing all the qualitative data.
