Abstract
"This chapter reviews recent qualitative studies on personalized learning in middle/secondary school settings to analyze the role of culture in how this concept is enacted and researched. Personalized learning is posited as a pedagogical approach that aims to revolutionize schooling and challenge educational inequity by foregrounding learners’ agency in what and how they learn, tailoring pedagogy and its purpose to learners’ unique interests, needs, and abilities. Given the strong emphasis of the approach on the uniquenesses of the persons who are learning, our analysis interrogates the discourse on culture in studies on personalized learning and extrapolates how this discourse informs problem formulation, design and logic, sources of evidence, analysis and interpretation, and implications for practice."

This three-credit graduate-level course is an introduction to relationships between special and bilingual/English learner education.  Topics covered include

Marybelle Marrero-Colón is a professional development content manager for the Center for Applied Linguistics with 33 years of experience as an educator, inclusion specialist, program coordinator, administrator, and professional developer.  She holds an M.A. in Bilingual Special Education, and an M.S. in Administration & Supervision with a specialty in professional development.

Course Dates and Format
The course runs from June 1 to August 20.  The format is asynchronous and allows for a flexible weekly study schedule.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has inarguably exacerbated longstanding disparities that undermine the economic mobility and integration of immigrant parents in the United States and their children’s prospects for success in school and beyond. These include critical two-generational barriers disproportionately experienced by immigrant families, such as poverty, limited English proficiency, digital access and device challenges, linguistic isolation, and low levels of parental formal education. These disparities sit at the intersection of K-12, early childhood, adult education, and social services systems where they are largely unaddressed, despite expectations that each system play a major role in addressing them.

This webcast will explore new findings from an analysis conducted by the Migration Policy Institute’s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, which compares key sociodemographic characteristics of immigrant and U.S.-born parents of young and school-age children and underscores their two-generational implications. Speakers will examine disparities evident in the analysis and discuss potential ways to incorporate equity-sensitive measures associated with them in the policy and program frameworks of key systems, with an eye to achieving more responsive and effective service designs and improving equity and access more generally for families facing multiple disparities.

Abstract

After a summer of an important racial reckoning in the United States, there is an increased awareness about the consequences of media coverage and  portrayals of racial dissent. The way that the media portrays protest events shapes how the public understands and perceives those events. The use of insensitive or even implicitly racist messaging among media outlets to portray racial justice events has an impact on public discourse on racial justice. This research uses articles from the Baltimore Sun’s coverage of the Baltimore Uprising of 2015 to examine media portrayals of h Freddie Gray, who died in the hands of Baltimore police, and the subsequent events of the Uprising. I use grounded theory qualitative coding techniques to identify specific framings that connote implicit biases in the media and used these to observe how the Baltimore Sun reported on the racial justice movement, specifically Black Lives Matter during this time period.

Two URA Scholars "let the love of learning rule humanity" Meredith Power and Katie Poteet have been selected as the recipients of the 2021 Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 22 UM-UMBC Shirley C. Sorensen Award.  The students were selected for this prestigious honor on the basis of academic excellence as well as active participation within the university and the broader community, and in their perseverance to succeed and to serve others. These qualities clearly demonstrate the Phi Kappa Phi motto - "Let the love of learning rule humanity."  The award comes with a $1,000 prize. 

Poteet intends to use the funds to help pay her way to a Master's degree at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. "I am very honored to receive this award for my accomplishments at UMBC and very excited to use it to pursue my program in Education, Globalization, and International Development at Cambridge next year!"

The Shirley C. Sorensen Undergraduate Academic Excellence Award is bestowed in recognition of the numerous contributions Dr. Sorensen has made over many years to The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and especially to the former five-campus chapter, University of Maryland Chapter 22 UM-UMBC.
