• Present research at Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS) as well as a UVA research symposium.
• Work hands-on with UVA faculty mentor(s) and graduate student mentor(s).
• Participate in workshops on research methods and the grad school application process, and enroll in an intensive GRE preparation course.

• A $3000 stipend and some travel and meal expenses.
• Housing in a university residence hall.

• Be a member of a group that is underrepresented in educational research.
• Be a current junior, with 2 semesters or less to complete after the internship.

Eligibility and Requirements:

• Undergraduate students with a genuine interest in cancer research, cumulative GPA >3.0, and strong letters of recommendation as reflected in their application packages, are eligible.
• Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents.

·         Underrepresented minorities are encouraged to apply.

·         Twenty internships are awarded each summer; applications for these slots are reviewed by committee and evaluated on a competitive basis

·         The NSIP is a full time ten-week commitment beginning in the last week of May that is not compatible with concurrent outside employment or classes; see website for this summer’s program dates.

     Subsistence Allowance and Housing:

·         Interns receive a subsistence allowance of $4,000 for the 10-week internship.

·         Apartment-style dormitory housing is available at Loyola University Maryland. (http://www.loyola.edu/admission/undergraduate/life-at-loyola/housing-dining)

·         A travel allowance of up to $500 is provided for travel to and from Baltimore.

Special Collections Invites Applications for Undergraduate Research Award

The Friends of the Library & Gallery is inaugurating a $500 award for undergraduates to do research in the library’s Special Collections.  Projects that make substantial onsite use of the Special Collections in any area ranging from the photography collections to the biological sciences archives, and from the rare books to the science fiction holdings are eligible for consideration by the committee charged with judging the applications.  Applicants must submit a project statement, a writing sample, and a letter of recommendation for them and their project from a faculty mentor.  The applications and accompanying materials must be submitted to Chief Curator Tom Beck by November 12, 2015 for funding during the spring semester 2016. 

Lois Kuhn Romeo, Chair of the Friends Council, said that the group is delighted to offer support to student researchers in Special Collections.  “UMBC is nationally recognized as an innovator in undergraduate research, and the Friends wishes to recognize talented students by giving them support in doing their research,” Ms. Romeo remarked.  Acting Director of the Library & Gallery Joyce Tenney said: “The Special Collections have excellent holdings and superb staff that will be pleased to give the Friends award winners the benefit of their expertise.”

Meet Sean,
He is a Chemical Engineering major and corresponding secretary for Tau Beta Pi (TBP), the Engineering Honor Society. He is currently working on the synthesis and characterization of 3D graphene nanosheets to be used as support for electrocatalysts in a fuel cell.

Sean recently completed work at the University of New Mexico Nanoscience and Microsystems Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

He hopes to complete a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and become a professor at a research university in the future.
