The Stevens Initiative gathered responses from virtual exchange implementers around the world, resulting in data capturing 349 virtual exchange programs that connected 221,333 young people from fall 2019 through summer 2020.

The Stevens Initiative is an international effort to build global competence and career readiness skills for young people in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa by growing and enhancing the field of virtual exchange. Created in 2015 as a lasting tribute to Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, the Initiative is committed to helping to expand the virtual exchange field through three pillars of work: investing in promising programs, sharing knowledge and resources, and advocating for virtual exchange adoption. The Stevens Initiative has awarded 60 grants and, by summer 2022, will expand its reach to over 43,000 young people in 16 MENA countries and the Palestinian Territories, and in 46 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, one tribal community, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Washington, D.C. The Stevens Initiative is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, with funding provided by the U.S. Government, and is administered by the Aspen Institute. It is also supported by the Bezos Family Foundation and the governments of Morocco and the United Arab Emirates

Dr. Francis Hult and his colleague Dr. Marie Källkvist from Sweden have published a contribution in the new edited book Language Perceptions and Practices in Multilingual Universities.  Their chapter, "Multilingualism as a Problem or Resource? Negotiating Space for Languages Other than Swedish and English in University Language Planning," is based on their ethnographic discourse analytic research project examining language policymaking processes in higher education.

Stipends of $1,300-$3,450 help cover expenses for these one- to four-week programs.

The 2021 Summer Seminars and Institutes are 1- to 4-week virtual and residential programs that support collegial study of significant topics in the humanities and make use of important scholarship and primary resources such as archival documents, artifacts, or historic sites.

Typically, participants develop a scholarly and/or pedagogical project based on the topic. Programs take place throughout the United States, and participant stipends help cover travel and living expenses.

NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes

  • focus on the study and teaching of significant texts and other resources;
  • provide models of excellent scholarship and teaching;
  • contribute to the intellectual growth of the participants; and
  • build lasting communities of inquiry.

This year’s programs could have you delving into the depths of literature, history, and culture.

Maps can be created as single sheets or with multiple layers from the zip code / block level to worldwide.

Users can create individual accounts to save, share, and print work. A suite of tutorials is available to help both new and experienced users work with the tool effectively.

December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, honoring the United Nation's commitment for promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of disability that affects people around the world.

More than 1 billion people in the world have a disability. At fifteen percent (15%) of the world’s population, persons with disabilities account for the world’s largest minority. Furthermore, one out of every seven people is affected by disability.

UMBC Special Collections has recently revamped the guide to Researching African American Photographers and invites you to check it out. We have added information on two Baltimore photographers within the collection, Cary Beth Cryor and Irving Henry Webster Phillips Sr. Other changes included the addition of more articles, books on specific photographers, and books on compilations of photographers. There are plenty of examples of research sources and a lot more to find in the included databases, outside resources, and the article searches.
