Celebrating National Braille Literacy Month

<Tagline>Empowering Access Through Braille</Tagline>

January is Braille Literacy Month, and January 4th marks World Braille Day, honoring the birthday of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille code. This month is all about raising awareness of the importance of braille literacy and recognizing how braille supports independence, education, and access for people with visual impairments and beyond.

When many people hear "braille," they think only of blindness, but braille benefits individuals with low vision, dual sensory loss, and multiple disabilities.

Here are 6 things you may not know about Braille:

Louis Braille was just 15 years old when he invented Braille

Braille is a tactile code, not a language—many languages can be read and written in Braille

A braille cell is made up of 6 raised dots

Braille includes letters, numbers, punctuation, music notation, and even formatting like bold and italics

Braille takes up more space than print—Webster's Unabridged Dictionary is 72 volumes in braille

There are two levels of braille: uncontracted (letter-by-letter) and contracted (a shorthand version)

Technology & Braille: Today, refreshable braille screens and other assistive technology make braille more accessible digitally than ever. These tools allow people with visual impairments to read digital content, access coursework, and navigate the world in real time, connecting braille literacy to modern digital accessibility.
Want to try it yourself? Here's a link to type and see your name in Braille.

As you go about campus this month, take a moment to notice braille on signs, elevators, and other materials. These small adaptations make a big difference in accessibility and independence. Let's celebrate Braille literacy, accessibility, and inclusive learning this month and all year long.

The course will equip students with an understanding of the concept of inclusive programming and the value of community engagement to create sustainable community programs and events.

CLDR 410-02, Asset Based Community Development with Jess Wyatt (UMBC Alumni Relations and Asset-Based Community Development Institute)

When/Where: Wednesday nights, 4:30 - 7:00pm, 3/4/26 - 4/8/26 at the Lion Brothers Building classroom in Southwest Baltimore City (on the UMBC shuttle route).

Course Description: This course will address the fundamentals of Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), how to practically implement ABCD in students' daily professional practice while developing a community of practice using ABCD, as well as, becoming ABCD practitioners in the field. If not, it is a saying that means to follow through on something you said. Organizations say a lot through their marketing, their grant proposals, and ultimately through their vision, mission, and values. But there's one major way to see if they're really walking the walk or just talking: their BUDGET! An organization's budget is their accountability to the things that they say. This course will teach students how to align their values and their intended impact with their budgets so that they can stand in integrity.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to Sally Scott (sjscott@umbc.edu) and Devin Wilkins (devinw2@umbc.edu).
