Understanding Trauma for Students Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence: A Faculty and Staff Workshop presented by TurnAround Inc on Tuesday, October 8th from 9:30-11am in the Women’s Center. RSVP is required through the Women’s Center’s myUMBC page.

Supporting Survivors of Sexual Violence: Cultivating a Survivor-Responsive Campus Workshop for students on Thursday, October 17th from 5:30-7pm. Students can RSVP here.
- The month will conclude with The Clothesline Project Display will be Monday, October 28th from 11am-4pm on Commons Main Street.
What's Your Green Dot? Learn more through Green Dot Overview Training
Green Dot is built on the premise that in order to measurably reduce the perpetration of power-based personal violence, including sexual violence, partner violence, or stalking, a cultural shift is necessary. In order to create a cultural shift, a critical mass of people will need to engage in a new behavior or set of behaviors that will make violence less sustainable within any given community. The “new behavior” is a green dot. This extremely interactive session is great for you to:
- Understand the impact of power-based personal violence on campus and in various communities
- Learn how to identify power-based personal violence and respond within the bounds of your strengths and limitations
- Practice newly developed skills to be prepared for enacting this in your daily life

Portland's
Milagro Theatre will showcase the life of Multnomah County Circuit Judge Xiomara Torres.
Judge Torres is a modern-day fairytale rooted in Salvadoran folklore. It is a story of triumph against the odds;
Xiomara Torres made her rise from undocumented immigrant to one of only a few Latina judges in Oregon.
Materials in BOTH English and Spanish will be provided. After the play, attendees will be able to engage in a brief facilitated dialogue with the performers. Food and beverages will be provided after the show. All undergrads, grads, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend! This event is open to the public!

URA Scholar Gerson Kroiz Publishes Paper!
URA Scholar Gerson Kroiz (Mathematics and Statistics) published a paper with his research mentors, Carlos Barajas, Matthias K. Gobbert, Gerson C. Kroiz, and Bradford E. Peercy in the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering.
"Challenges and Opportunities for the Simulations of Calcium Waves on Modern Multi-Core and Many-Core Parallel Computing Platforms."

Abstract
State‐of‐the‐art distributed‐memory computer clusters contain multicore CPUs with 16 and more cores. The second generation of the Intel Xeon Phi many‐core processor has more than 60 cores with 16 GB of high‐performance on‐chip memory. We contrast the performance of the second‐generation Intel Xeon Phi, code‐named Knights Landing (KNL), with 68 computational cores to the latest multicore CPU Intel Skylake with 18 cores. A special‐purpose code solving a system of nonlinear reaction‐diffusion partial differential equations with several thousands of point sources modeled mathematically by Dirac delta distributions serves as realistic test bed. The system is discretized in space by the finite volume method and advanced by fully implicit time‐stepping, with a matrix‐free implementation that allows the complex model to have an extremely small memory footprint. The sample application is a seven variable model of calcium‐induced calcium release (CICR) that models the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical contraction in a heart cell. The results demonstrate that excellent parallel scalability is possible on both hardware platforms, but that modern multicore CPUs outperform the specialized many‐core Intel Xeon Phi KNL architecture for a large class of problems such as systems of parabolic partial differential equations.

Experimentalist: The Art of Robert W. Fichter
Online exhibit available now!
This online exhibit accompanies an exhibition presented at UMBC’s Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery from August 28–December 18, 2019. The exhibition represents the first retrospective of the artist’s career in over thirty years.
Created between 1962 and 2006, the works reproduced online are drawn entirely from the Robert W. Fichter Archive at UMBC. The selection highlights the artist’s experimental approach to examining the human condition. Employing shifting moods and mediums as well as wit, humor, and satire, Fichter delivers trenchant critiques of war, nuclear proliferation, and environmental disaster. Firmly rooting his expressive compositions in a strong sense of place—the surreal landscapes of his native Florida—he presents a singular vision of humanity on the brink.
The exhibition Experimentalist: The Art of Robert Fichter was curated by Tom Beck, Curator Emeritus. The presentation at the Library Gallery was organized by Beth Saunders, Curator and Head of Special Collections.

URA Scholar Adursh Iyer Publishes Paper!
Adursh Iyer, a 2018-19 UMBC URA Scholar, has published a paper entitled, "The Origin of the X-Ray Emission in Two Well-aligned Extragalactic Jets: The Case for IC/CMB", with his mentor, Dr. Eileen Meyer (Dept. of Physics) in the Astrophysical Journal Letters:
Abstract:
Nearly all galaxies in the universe contain a super-massive black hole at their centers, with some fraction of them hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). In some cases, these systems produce relativistic jets of ionized plasma, but the nature of the X-ray emission of these jets is still a matter of ongoing debate. A popular explanation for the X-ray emission has been inverse-Compton scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (IC/CMB), where a population of relativistic electrons upscatter ambient photons of the CMB. While we have been able to rule out the IC/CMB model in dozens of sources due to violation of gamma-ray upper limits, the results in this paper are the first detection of the IC/CMB model. The two blazar sources we analyzed (OJ 287 and PKS 1510-089) are clear outliers in that they are highly superluminal relative to their jet power, which agrees with the energetics required by the IC/CMB model. Continued long-term monitoring with the Fermi/LAT could solidify these cases by detecting a plateau signature in the recombined light-curve which would clearly signal the presence of a non-variable emission component consistent with IC/CMB.
