    <div class="html-content">The deadline to apply to the Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) has been extended until NEXT Friday, May 9, 2025!<div><br></div><div>Students must submit a research or artistic proposal, along with a UMBC mentor support statement.  </div><div><br></div><div>URAs provide up to $1500 in funding <span>to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Entrepreneurship URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate researchers to support the commercialization of their ideas to solve a technical or social problem. These solutions can be new or improved products or services, address a social or “green” concern or promote ideas that generate artistic value. Students will collaborate with either a faculty member or a business mentor identified or approved by the Alex. Brown Center as they conduct their research. To be eligible for an ENTR URA students must be enrolled as a UMBC student for the duration of the work proposed.     <div class="html-content"><h2><strong>Graduate Assistantship Announcement</strong></h2><div><div><p><strong>Division of Student Affairs</strong><span> </span></p><p><strong>Research Assistantship:</strong> Graduate assistantship (Master’s or PhD level) will be available starting as early as <strong>July 1, 2025 </strong>(dependent on student availability) to work with Student Belonging &amp; the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being in the Division of Student Affairs at UMBC. With the support of the Director of the Center for Religion, Spirituality, &amp; Pluralism who oversees the Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, the Graduate Assistant will help design systems to collect and interpret data, co-manage marketing and social media, provide logistical support for the Center, and help supervise student interns.</p><p>As one of the identity-based centers within Student Belonging, The Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being serves as a spiritually-centered space where students and UMBC community members can gather at the intersection of religion, faith, spirituality, and other lived experiences. The Gathering Space prioritizes individual religious practice, opportunities to explore holistic well-being connected to religion and spirituality, and creating spaces to engage across differences, by centering the importance of interfaith work and dialogue. Within the Gathering Space, three core themes are emphasized: radical love &amp; belonging, spiritual well-being, and energetic pluralism.</p><p>The duties of the assistantship will fall into the following areas:</p><ul><li><em>Data Collection &amp; Assessment</em>: The GA will co-lead Gathering Space assessment efforts within the center, including the design of pre- and post-assessment measures, data analysis, and outcome sharing with the Division of Student Affairs, the UMBC campus broadly, and community stakeholders.</li><li><em>Co-Manage Marketing &amp; Social Media</em>: The GA will design and implement varied systems to help manage usage and student engagement with The Gathering Space, which hosts 350+ visitors per week. These systems will help communicate upcoming events and programs as well as create a narrative to share about the role of religious and spiritual life at UMBC.</li><li><em>Logistical Support</em>: The GA will provide logistical support for some center events, intern hiring, and space management, seeking to be a welcoming and positive presence in the space.</li><li><em>Co-Management of Student Staff</em>: The GA will help manage the student intern team by providing direct supervision, attend weekly operations meetings, and facilitate trainings and practice opportunities for student staff to develop skills connected to interfaith dialogue, leadership development, customer service and space management, and/or program facilitation.</li></ul><p><strong>Potential Opportunities:</strong></p><ul><li>Create systems to collect and interpret data</li><li>Program management and assessment</li><li>Student supervision skills</li><li>Deepening skills connected to interfaith work, dialogue, and engaging across difference</li></ul><p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong></p><ul><li>Experience with interfaith dialogue and/or work with religious diversity</li><li>Experience with data collection and assessment</li><li>Experience with marketing and social media/online communications</li><li>Previous experience in creating and implementing programming for students, preferably in higher education; supervision of student interns and programmatic design</li><li>Interest and passion for equity, inclusion and diversity efforts, preferably experience in a higher education context (student organizations, student government, volunteering, internships, etc)</li><li>Required skills: detail-oriented; self-managed; reliable; creative problem solver; critical thinker</li></ul><p><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong></p><ul><li>Strong systems thinker, particularly around data collection and assessment</li><li>Experience with marketing and social media and ability to connect a marketing/social media plan back to systems and data collection/assessment</li><li>Proven commitment to supporting equity, inclusion, and diversity efforts within higher education</li><li>Professional interest in working in higher education administration or spiritual/religious life</li></ul><p><strong>Stipend: </strong>The graduate assistantship comes with a competitive stipend and is designed for up to 20 hours weekly.     <div class="html-content"><h3><a href="https://neuroclastic.com/its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what-you-think/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Autism is a Spectrum</a>- and Acceptance Matters</h3><div><br></div><div>April is known as Autism Awareness Month, including April 2 as<a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/04/1135257" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> </a><a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/autism-day" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">World Autism Awareness Day (link)</a>.   In listening to many within the<span> </span><span>Autism community - there is a call for media to move from outdated and using awareness to <em>acceptance</em> to foster change and inclusivity for those affected by autism - experienc<a href="https://autismsociety.org/autismis/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">e</a></span><a href="https://autismsociety.org/autismis/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span> more about Autism Society's Autis</span><span>m IS series here</span></a><span>.  Information on <a href="https://www.autism-society.org/what-is/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">What is Autism is linked here</a>, and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/100498" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">a deeper dive sharing the voices of many people on the Autism Spectrum is posted here.</a></span></div><div><br></div><div>On April 25,<a href="https://governor.maryland.gov/news/press/pages/governor-moore-proclaims-autism-acceptance-month-in-maryland.aspx#:~:text=Published:%204/25/2023,%E2%80%8B" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Maryland Governor Wes Moore proclaimed April as Autism Awareness Month</a>  and <span>Lieutenant Governor Aruna K. Miller presented the Governor’s proclamation to</span><span> recognize people who are living with autism and those who advocate on their behalf, and honor the contributions of the autism community. </span><span>She was joined by Maryland Department of Disabilities Secretary Carol Beatty and Maryland Statewide Autism Coordinator Victoria Rodriguez-Roldán in unveiling<a href="https://mdod.maryland.gov/asgarn/Documents/MDOD_MDAutismStatePlan_fin%20(1).pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Maryland’s five-year Autism State Plan</a>.</span></div><p><br></p><div>Being on the <a href="https://neuroclastic.com/its-a-spectrum-doesnt-mean-what-you-think/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Autism Spectrum is a nuanced diagnosis with a wide range of traits, and is explained well here</a>.  For a more visual presentation, <a href="https://themighty.com/topic/autism-spectrum-disorder/rebecca-burgess-comic-redesigns-the-autism-spectrum/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Rebecca Burgess also explains the spectrum within her comic on The Mighty</a>. Day-to-day living and learning independence was recently examined in depth on<a href="https://www.pbs.org/show/different-key/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> PBS's In a Different Key </a>which covers the history of autism and highlights the experience of a range of people with autism, their families and their community.</div><div><br></div><div>Recently, autism has been in the news, resulting in<a href="https://awnnetwork.org/leading-autism-organizations-release-joint-statement-on-upholding-scientific-integrity-and-supporting-the-autism-community/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> leading autism organizations to release this joint statement on upholding scientific integrity and supporting the autism community. </a><br><br>Finally, as we close out Autism Awareness Month, it's important to move beyond basic awareness and focus on real understanding. There are still many myths about autism that create barriers for autistic individuals. With understanding, acceptance, and respect for different communication styles, we can help create a more inclusive world. These facts are based on resources from the <a href="https://www.kennedykrieger.org/stories/myths-facts-about-autism-spectrum-disorder" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Kennedy Krieger Institute</a> and <a href="https://differentminds.scot/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Different Minds Scotland</a>, two organizations doing critical work to promote accurate information about autism.     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span><strong>RSVP BY TODAY for our end of the year Celebration &amp; Awards! </strong></span></p><p><span>Student Belonging (formerly known as Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, &amp; Belonging, or i3b) in the Division of Student Affairs has hosted celebration ceremonies for Latinx, Black, and LGBTQIA+ / queer students for several years. This year, we are excited to add the Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards to the lineup. These three affinity events will honor and celebrate the achievements of UMBC's outstanding community members and graduating students.</span></p><p><span><strong>5th Annual Black &amp; Latine/x Celebration &amp; Awards</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Tuesday, May 20, 2025</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. </strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Skylight, The Commons 3rd Floor</strong></span></p><p><span>This celebration is in recognition of the achievements of UMBC's Black and Latina/e/o/x graduating students as well as contributing community members. Black and Latine/x students have made invaluable contributions to the wider UMBC community. This celebration is in recognition of Black and Latine/x graduating students and of all the allied staff, faculty, alumni, and programs that work to support them.</span></p><p><span>During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.</span></p><p><span>Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. </span></p><p><span>Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. </span></p><p><span><strong><em>Dress code</em></strong></span><span>: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best."     <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>RSVP BY TODAY for our end of the year Celebration &amp; Awards! </span></p><p><span>Student Belonging (formerly known as Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, &amp; Belonging, or i3b) in the Division of Student Affairs has hosted celebration ceremonies for Latinx, Black, and LGBTQIA+ / queer students for several years. This year, we are excited to add the Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards to the lineup. These three affinity events will honor and celebrate the achievements of UMBC's outstanding community members and graduating students.</span></p><p><span><strong>Inaugural Asian Cultural Celebration &amp; Awards</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>Thursday, May 15, 2025</strong></span></p><p><span><strong>5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. </strong></span></p><p><span><strong>University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor</strong></span></p><p><span>This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. </span><span><strong>We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia. </strong></span></p><br><p><span>During the gathering, we’ll enjoy food together, we’ll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who’ve contributed to their success.</span></p><br><p><span>Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. </span></p><p><span>Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. </span></p><p><span>Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." He got $1,500 for his research on ponds.<div><br></div><div>"The money I got from Undergraduate Research helped me travel to maybe exotics lands where I was able to study native flora and fauna and gather flora and fauna samples," said Scott. "I also was able to buy a tent!" he added with great vigor.</div><div><br></div><div><p>URAs provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research, scholarship, or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.</p><p>Applications require a research proposal and mentor statement of support.</p><p>"It was easy!," Scott explained.
