Before we continue, we'd like to give our appreciation to everyone who've helped us make this dream project a reality. Students and faculty who submitted recipes, partnerships that helped us grow and expand throughout the UMBC community, commonvision putting time and effort making such an amazing design with organizing all the recipes and pictures, and so much more. Although the cookbook was initiated and managed by Michael since fall of 202, this was a whole community effort, and we're just as excited as you guys to finally see it!
This cookbook has 75 pages featuring 44 heartfelt recipes, infused with love and passion with flavors all over the world! In addition, we provided recipes that can be made with common Retriever Essentials ingredients that we have in our pantry and can also be commonly seen at our Free Farmer's Markets!
While we plan on doing a release of the cookbook for purchase in the very near future, we are not selling them at the essentials space, the free farmers market, or anywhere as of right now. However, there will be a second posting about all of the information (date, time, place, etc.) in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned!
Not in regards to the cookbook, but if you or anyone you know would like to donate whether that be food items like cans, snacks, etc., or even donate your time, feel free to reach out to us at

Multi-Dimensional Mural: A Live Performance of Art, Sound, and Movement

Abstract
As a fine artist and muralist, I’ve often observed that despite the initial awe and admiration my completed works evoke, those feelings tend to fade from people’s memories quickly. This project aims to elevate static artwork into a dynamic performance that resonates deeply with viewers. By integrating music, movement, and visual art, I hope to foster a shared experience that becomes ingrained in collective memory, enriching our understanding of humanity’s creative expression.
Coming from the Dominican Republic and living in America has shaped my perspective as an Afro-Latina not only through music and art but also socially, politically, culturally, and ethically. This artwork represents not only my own identity but also the world around me. It reflects the ongoing struggles both internal (personal) and external (environmental) that affect my body, mind, and spirit. The selected music serves as an empowering force, connecting me to my roots and driving the emotional rhythm of the performance. My wish is for my art to bring joy and empowerment to communities. A distinctive feature of this work is the live performance, where each piece of animation will be synchronized with the rhythm of the music, creating an interactive, immersive experience.

Abstract
This presentation will present the method and findings from an ongoing effort by the GES 286 course to gauge the health of campus vegetation. Students collect data necessary to derive the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) by sending tethered weather balloons with a payload of two cameras (one color; the other, infrared) 450 feet above campus to observe vegetation at different locations on the UMBC campus. Results are then georeferenced using Geographic Information Systems to generate the NDVI using “map algebra”. This approach is analogous to imaging techniques used for research and policy purposes, introducing students to the data models and techniques used in remote sensing generally. Ultimately, by imaging repeatedly, we can observe how the overall health of campus vegetation changes seasonally and over time.

UMBC Multidisciplinary Capstone: Design and Development of an Autonomous Fixed-Wing UAV for Long-Range Payload Delivery

Abstract
A UMBC multidisciplinary capstone team is designing and constructing a fixed-wing UAV. The UAV will carry a 10 lb payload and fly a range of 10 nautical miles at a minimum airspeed of 35 mph. It will be capable of autonomous flight and avoiding hazards. This aircraft is built from 3D printed and hobby-level electronics and software. It will also be capable of transmitting video and maintaining the safety of operators and nearby property. Sub-teams consisting of Computer and Mechanical Engineers have worked collaboratively to complete these tasks. A conventional gasoline-powered airframe with a v-tail minimizes drag while maintaining structural integrity. Remote ID detection, front sensing LiDAR, bottom-mounted LiDAR, and an airspeed sensor are used for UAV and forward obstacle avoidance and autonomous landing. Real-time Kinematic (RTK) GPS is used for centimeter accuracy. Telemetry radios and long range ExpressLRS radio are used to maintain connectivity over long range. A proof-of-concept prototype with a low-cost flight controller has been constructed. Additional tuning, setup of full autonomy, and configuration of video transmission, including lessons learned from the first test flight are yet to be performed.

GSA Award Descriptions
Alex Rittle Outstanding Senator Award
Eligibility: Current GSA Senator serving a full academic year in good standing.This award recognizes a current GSA Senator who demonstrates exemplary leadership, advocacy, and service throughout the academic year. The recipient consistently enhances the graduate student experience by showing initiative, reliability, and a strong commitment to collaboration and inclusion within the GSA and the broader UMBC community.
Jessica Soto Perez Memorial Award
Eligibility: Open to all graduate students EXCEPT E-Council or Senators.
Named in memory of Jessica Soto Perez, this award honors a graduate student who exemplifies mentorship, service, and community building. The recipient supports fellow students’ academic and professional development, fosters a sense of belonging, and contributes meaningfully to the UMBC graduate community.
Donald Creighton Outstanding Faculty Award
Eligibility: UMBC faculty who actively mentor and support graduate students.
This award celebrates a faculty member who goes above and beyond in their support of graduate students. Through mentorship, advocacy, and role modeling, the recipient fosters academic excellence, professional growth, and a collaborative environment for graduate student success.
Outstanding University Staff Award
Eligibility: UMBC staff members who provide exceptional support to graduate students.
This award acknowledges a university staff member who significantly contributes to the success and well-being of graduate students at UMBC. The recipient demonstrates responsiveness, reliability, and a collaborative spirit while advocating for graduate student needs and building community.
Outstanding GSO Award
Graduate Student Organization (GSO) that significantly enhances student experience.
This award recognizes a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) that excels in creating impactful programming, fostering community, and advocating for graduate student interests. The selected GSO demonstrates innovation, consistency, and inclusivity in its engagement efforts.
Community Leadership Award
Eligibility: Open to GSA E-Council and Senators with multiple roles.
This award honors a GSA E-Council member or Senator who holds multiple leadership roles and exemplifies a sustained commitment to service and community engagement. The recipient effectively mobilizes diverse stakeholders to address community needs and foster collaboration across campus.
Graduate Student Athlete Award
Eligibility: UMBC graduate students participating in competitive athletics with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. This award celebrates a graduate student athlete who maintains academic excellence while demonstrating dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship in their athletic endeavors. The recipient also contributes to community service and fosters a positive and inclusive campus environment.
Eligibility and Integrity Guidelines for GSA Awards
To ensure fairness, transparency, and the integrity of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) Awards process, the following guidelines have been established. These criteria apply to all awards unless otherwise stated.1. Award Frequency Restrictions
Recipients may not receive the same award more than once within a four-year period. This ensures broader recognition and encourages a diverse pool of awardees.2. Nomination Solicitation Policy
Any individual found to have actively solicited nominations for themselves may be disqualified at the discretion of the Awards Review Committee. This policy upholds the integrity of the nomination process and fosters a culture of peer-driven recognition.3. General Eligibility Requirements
All nominees must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with UMBC at the time of nomination. Additional eligibility criteria specific to each award (e.g., active GSA membership or Senator status) must also be met. 4. Review and Selection Process
The Awards Review Committee will evaluate nominations using standardized rubrics and established criteria. The committee will ensure that the selection process is equitable and inclusive.5. Appeal Process
Individuals may submit a written appeal within seven (7) business days of being notified of disqualification or non-selection. Appeals will be reviewed by an impartial panel designated by the GSA Executive Council, and all decisions will be final.
