Fall 2020 Research Writing Support Groups Weekly 10 - 11:00 am on WebEx (day TBD)

The Dresher Center for the Humanities, the Center for Social Science Scholarship,and the Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts, invite CAHSS faculty and advanced graduate students to participate in Fall 2020 online research writing support groups.

Participants will gather virtually with others who are eager to advance their research-related writing (books, articles, dissertations, statements, grant proposals, book proposals, artist statements, etc.). Given the challenging events of 2020 thus far, many are struggling to find time and space to devote to research-related writing this fall.

These ongoing research writing support groups will help you make time for writing and reflection and find a group of like-minded writers who can help you keep the momentum going while creating accountability and building community! As one of our participants from this past summer’s research writing bootcamp shared, it is a “gentle, recurring tap that reminds me to turn to my research for a few hours every week.

The support groups will meet via WebEx weekly at a mutually convenient time for approximately an hour of small group, cohort-based discussion of the writing process and shared reflection on your own writing. Drop in or out as your schedule permits, but you must register in advance and commit to participating most weeks with your small group.

Literacy in Education During Challenging Times

A virtual panel in recognition of International Literacy Day

Proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966, International Literacy Day (ILD) is commemorated annually on the 8th of September to raise awareness about the essential role of literacy in human development.

ILD 2020 focuses on ‘literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond’, drawing attention to how the global public health crisis exacerbates existing educational challenges and inequalities.  Panelists will discuss their research-based work on effective ways to foster literacy development, highlighting a range of interdisciplinary and collaborative initiatives that involve teachers, schools, and communities in shaping equitable spaces for learning.

Speaker:

Dr. Kellina (Kelli) M. Craig-Henderson is a former Professor of Psychology who currently serves as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation (NSF). She previously served as the Deputy Division Director of the Social and Economic Sciences Division of SBE before transitioning into the role of Director for NSF's Tokyo Regional Office. Before undertaking full?time Federal service at NSF, she was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at Howard University.

Dr. Craig-Henderson is passionate about broadening the participation of underrepresented groups, and has been involved in a number of national and international activities that share this focus. She has taken on a leadership role at the National Science Foundation to promote the establishment of a new social science funding mechanism that supports evidence?based research on the Science of Broadening Participation. Her efforts have resulted in federal support for research examining issues related to gender parity in STEM, minority participation in work settings as well as a number of other areas.

One of our department’s students, Katie Poteet, has been recognized as this week’s undergraduate researcher of the week. The title of her research project is “Building a Nation: How National Service Requirements Affect Patriotic Sentiment”. Her research will investigate whether countries with mandatory military or civil service requirements for young adults also have higher levels of patriotism throughout the country. Purpose

Dresher Center Rapid Response awards offer small grants of up to $1,500 to UMBC faculty (full- and part-time) and graduate students whose humanities-oriented research has been delayed or disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and travel ban. The awards may also be used by faculty who wish to shift their research to focus on humanities questions surrounding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic or undertake new work in the humanistic study of social justice.

The funds are meant to provide support for current UMBC researchers who require additional funding to adapt to new research circumstances, interests, and opportunities, and are unable to access other funds for this purpose.

Submit applications to dreshercenter@umbc.edu. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout fall 2020, beginning on August 15.
