    <strong>Jessica Berman</strong>, Professor of English, and Affiliate Faculty in Gender, Women's, + Sexuality Studies; and Language, Literacy, and Culture, has returned to the Dresher Center as our full-time director. Last year, Jessica spent time working on the manuscript for her upcoming book project which is investigating global radio in relation to transnational modernism.<div><br></div>

    <p><span>CAHSS is continuing our partnership with <a href="https://www.hanoverresearch.com/education-solutions/higher-education/grants-solution/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Hanover Research</a>,</span><span> a grant development and research firm that helps faculty strengthen competitive external proposals to federal agencies and private and non-profit foundations. </span><span>Teams of CAHSS faculty may apply for the opportunity to work directly with Hanover professionals. </span></p>

    <span>If you're looking for "the college experience," join UMBC Mock Trial! </span><span><span><span>Mock trial is a competitive courtroom simulation, where you get to portray witnesses and</span> attorneys, and get scored off your performance. </span></span><span>Mock trial is a great place to channel your creativity and energy into something fun and exciting, something that you'll get recognition for. It's also a place where you're bound to make close friendships, as a result of all the time we spend together. In addition, mock trial gives you skills that are invaluable for college, grad schools, and everyday life: public speaking, problem-solving, teamwork, critical reading/writing/thinking, acting, data interpretation/analysis, and more. So if you want to make friends, pad your resume, participate in a competitive activity, work on your acting or public speaking, or just have something fun and entertaining to do, mock trial is the place to go. </span>

    <p><span><strong>Undergraduate Data Science Scholars - Call for Applications</strong></span></p>
    <p><span><em>Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data?</em></span></p>
    <p><span><em>Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?</em></span></p>
    <p><span>The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems for the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in fall 2022. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society.</span></p>
    <p><strong><span>Responsibilities:</span><span> </span></strong></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 Foundations of Data Science. The class meets Mo/We 1-2:15 pm. The cohort of DSS scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor. Scholars will be paid $15/hour for specific TF tasks, for 5-10 hours per week in Fall 2022.</span></li>
    <li><span>Social science DSS scholars will attend at least two CS3 events in Fall 2022 and/or participate in research initiatives with social science faculty. The scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with CS3 faculty.</span></li>
    </ul>
    <p><span><strong>Background and skills:</strong></span></p>
    <p><span>Applicants should have knowledge in at least one of the following:</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><span>Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data</span></li>
    <li>
    <span>Python</span><span> or</span><span> one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing, python)</span>
    </li>
    <li><span>Jupyter notebooks with python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.</span></li>
    </ul>

    <h5><strong><u>Women's Center Fall 2022 Hours of Operation:<br><br></u></strong></h5>
    <div><span>Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will start welcoming community members into our physical space!</span></div>

    <span>In order to protect our collective health</span><span>, we encourage social distancing while in the lounge space, and may enforce capacity limits for larger events. In addition, we ask that community members continue to wear masks in our spaces. </span>
    </div>

    <div><span><strong><em>Our Fall Hours are:</em></strong></span></div>
    <div><span><div><span><strong>Mondays through Thursdays: 11am - 5pm</strong></span></div>
    <div><span><strong>Fridays: 11am - 4pm</strong></span></div></span></div>

    <div><span>While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely.
