External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission. <Title>Apply for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2026 (applications due 12/19)</Title>
<Tagline>An empowering exploration of systemic change in Baltimore</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience for UMBC undergraduate and graduate students to explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore. Participants will spend much of the week in Baltimore City connecting with local leaders, policymakers, organizations, and community members, to gain a nuanced understanding of the resources and challenges related to their topic areas. The program supports students in linking their knowledge and interests to local contexts, and in identifying pathways for long-term community engagement.</p><p>This year's ASB program will take place from <strong>Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 20, 2026</strong>. Participants spend much of the week in small groups, each co-led by UMBC students trained by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life, exploring a specific topic in depth. </p><p>This year's focus areas are:</p><ul><li><strong>Housing Equity and Access</strong></li><li><strong>Justice in Psychiatric Care</strong></li><li><strong>Fostering LGBT+ Belonging in Schools</strong></li></ul><p><strong>Complete the <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSceG3UWUXj91hVndE0SntRal4KkrD8ZakqaAc5Z1j8JVVOtvQ/viewform" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ASB 2026 application</a> by December 19, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST. </strong>Accepted and waitlisted applicants will be notified via email in late January.</p><p>ASB is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. It shows how this manufactured disorder enables and conceals the system's core profit-making logics, where expansion is driven less by policy effectiveness than by opportunities for revenue generation. Companies providing food, medical care, commissary goods, and oversight mechanisms generate income through confinement, creating webs of economic dependency that blur public and private boundaries.     introduction to the interrelated fields of Decolonial Studies and 
    Coloniality Studies. Over the winter session, in this seminar style course, students will read an article, an essay, or an excerpt of a key essay, by key theorists in the fields, and meet with have a conversation about the larger philosophical interventions that they make in Western Thought.     <div class="html-content"><div><p>We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Data Science and AI Scholars program for supporting students in Spring 2026. The Data Science and AI Scholars program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including non-STEM majors, who will examine all aspects of data and its impact on society. This year, scholars will have the opportunity to be teaching fellows or research fellows. Scholars will be paid $20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week.</li><li>Scholars will attend at least two events in Spring 2026 and/or participate in research initiatives andprofessional development for their leadership growth and mentoring.     <div class="html-content"><div>Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) SCIPE program (Enhancing the Transdisciplinary Research Ecosystem for Earth and Environmental Science with Dedicated Cyber Infrastructure Professionals), CGC-SCIPE is a collaborative effort between the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) - iHARP and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences (UMCES). The project aims to strengthen the research capacity in Earth and Environmental Sciences by leveraging High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence, and data-driven modeling, while developing the next generation of Cyber Infrastructure Professionals (CIPs).  This project, as part of the iHARP center and Mdata lab, invites applications for UMBC CIP Graduate Fellows (UM-CIP Fellows).</div><div><br></div><div><strong>About the Fellowship</strong></div><div>The UM-CIP Graduate Fellowship supports a senior PhD student whose dissertation research aligns with Earth or Environmental Science and who seeks to incorporate HPC or advanced AI into their work.
