<Title>Undergraduate Data Science Scholars</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><strong><span>Undergraduate Data Science Scholars – 
    </span><span>Call for Applications</span></strong></p><p><span>Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic or geographic data?</span></p><p><span>Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?</span></p><p><span>The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems to establish the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in Fall 2021. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society.</span></p><p><strong><span>Responsibilities:</span><span> </span></strong></p><p><span>• Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 Foundations of Data Science. The class meets Tu/Th 1:00-2:15pm. The cohort of DSS scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor. Scholars will be paid $15/hour for specific TF tasks, for 5-10 hours per week in fall 2021.</span></p><p><span>• Social science DSS scholars will attend at least two CS3 events in fall 2021 and/or participate in CS3 research initiatives. The scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with CS3 faculty.</span></p><p><span><strong>Background and skills:</strong></span></p><p><span>Applicants should have knowledge in at least one of the following:</span></p><p><span>• Analysis of social, behavioral, economic or geographic data</span></p><p><span>• Python</span><span> or</span><span> one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on  cloud computing, python)</span></p><p><span>• Jupyter notebooks with python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.</span></p><p><em><strong><span>Interested students should send a resume and a brief one or two sentence statement of interest to </span><a href="mailto:socialscience@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>socialscience@umbc.edu</span></a><span>by 9/8/21</span><span>. </span><span>Please put “CS3 Data Science Scholars” in the subject line of the email. </span></strong></em></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>While CS3 will run the admission and mentoring of the social science cohort of DSS, the Department of Information Systems is also partnering with the Center for Women in Technology to run another cohort.</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

<Title>Dresher Center Acting Director 2021-22</Title>
<Body>

    <div class="html-content">Denise Meringolo is the Acting Director for the Dresher Center for the Humanities for 2021-22. She is also an Associate Professor of History and has been the Director of Public History at UMBC since 2006. She is an expert in community based public history practice and <a href="https://inclusivehistorian.com/civic-engagement/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">civic engagement</a>. Her book <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/ncph-2013-book-award/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Museums, Monuments, and National Parks: Toward a New Genealogy of Public History</em></a> (University of Massachusetts, 2012) won the 2013 National Council on Public History prize for the best book in the field. In 2015, she established a crowd-source digital collection, <a href="https://baltimoreuprising2015.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>Preserve the Baltimore Uprising</em></a> in order to gather and protect stories of protest and civil disobedience in Baltimore. In 2018, she won a <a href="https://www.whiting.org/scholars/public-engagement-programs/fellowship" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Whiting Public Engagement Fellowship </a>which enabled her to activate the collection to promote community-based, collaborative historical reflection and interpretation. Between 2013 and 2021, she designed and facilitated a large <a href="https://ncph.org/history-at-work/tag/radical-roots/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">collaborative research project</a>, Radical Roots: Civic Engagement, Public History, and a Tradition of Social Justice Activism, which will be published as an open source digital collection of essays by Amherst College Press this winter. She is a member of the Governance Committee of the <a href="https://ncph.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Council on Public History</a>.<br><div><br></div><div><blockquote>"I am delighted to join the Dresher Center this year.     <div class="html-content"><h5><strong><u>Women's Center Fall 2021 Hours of Operation:<br><br></u></strong></h5><div><span>Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will resume our traditional in-person hours of operation and will welcome community members into our physical space. </span></div><div><br></div><div><span>In order to maintain physical </span><span>distancing</span><span>, the lounge space will be operating at 50% capacity. Masks are required to be in our space. </span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span><strong><em>Our Fall Hours are:</em></strong></span></div><div><span><div><span><strong>Mondays through Thursdays: 10am - 5:30pm</strong></span></div><div><span><strong>Fridays: 10am - 4pm</strong></span></div></span></div><div><span><strong><br></strong></span></div><div><span><em><span>Finally, you can experience our new comfy couches! Our usual plates/mugs/utensils will not be available so please bring your own if you plan on drinking or eating in the space.</span></em></span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely.
