Thread connects volunteers from the community with students who are struggling academically across Baltimore City. Rather than focusing on tutoring or mentorship we attempt to build strong relationships across lines of difference where both our volunteers and our young people are learning from each other. And we stick with our students for 10 years after their Freshman year of high school which means that we are deeply invested in their education and transition into adulthood.
We are a completely virtual volunteering opportunity and will stay that way until COVID is no longer a concern. We put our time commitment at 1-2 hours a week but the schedule you make is completely up to you! As long as you are connecting with your young person once a week and showing up with honesty then that is all we ask! While our students are with Thread for 10 years our volunteers only commit to a year when they sign on in order to give our students as much consistency as possible. And we will be accepting applications on a rolling basis throughout the year!

UMBC faculty, staff, and students have been active participants in Imagining America, a consortium of artists, scholars, organizers, and humanists envisioning and enacting a more just and liberatory America and world. Imagining America’s Leading and Learning Initiative is a three year action research project concerned with expanding the ways in which academic institutions understand, value, and support public, engaged, and activist scholarship. The LLI invites campus and community partners to apply to submit case studies of their work to the Stories of Change multimedia documentary project, in the following categories:
(1) Expanding Understandings of Knowledge Production
(2) Catalyzing Institutional Change
(3) Demonstrating the Power of Public, Engaged, and Activist Arts, Design, and Humanities

]]>Join us on March 9th at noon when Jeff Mantz will discuss NSF opportunities and funding for the social sciences.
Jeff Mantz has been at NSF since 2012. He is the Program Director for Cultural Anthropology, Program Director for the Dynamics of Integrated Socio-Environmental Systems (DISES) program, and is NSF’s Human Subjects Research Officer. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago and has previously taught at George Mason University, Cornell University, California State University at Stanislaus, and Vassar College. His own research takes him to the Caribbean and Central Africa, where he explores issues related to inequality, resource extraction, and commodity supply chains.

Upcoming Application Deadline for 2021 Summer Institute
In Summer 2021, RSF will sponsor a Summer Institute for doctoral students and early-career scholars in Social Science Genomics.
Applications are due April 9, 2021.
We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, and depending on various factors including vaccination rates, CDC recommendations, and state/local policies, we may modify the institute to include online instruction or postpone in-person instruction to the following year. We apologize for the ambiguity and uncertainty, but we want to make sure that the summer institute is both high quality and safe experiences. We expect that a final decision on the institute will be made in late May or early June.
The Russell Sage Foundation, in conjunction with the JPB Foundation, will sponsor the fourth Summer Institute in Social-Science Genomics from August 8 – August 20, 2021 at the Stoweflake Mountain Hotel in Stowe, Vermont, unless circumstances require us to change it to an online event. The purpose of this two-week workshop is to introduce graduate students and beginning faculty in economics, sociology, psychology, statistics, genetics, and other disciplines to the methods of social-science genomics—the analysis of genomic data in social science research. The program will include the interpretation and estimation of different concepts of heritability; the biology of genetic inheritance, gene expression, and epigenetics; design and analysis of genetic-association studies; analysis of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions; estimation and use of polygenic scores; as well as applications of genomic data in the social sciences.
