The
Connectionary program series is hosted by the Center for Democracy and Civic
Life to encourage and foster opportunities for conversation about issues that
affect our lives here at UMBC. Facilitated by UMBC students in the ConnectionCorps
civic dialogue program, these conversations help UMBC community members think
about their own experiences and identify pathways to engagement, shared
understanding, and opportunities for building a thriving campus community.
These sessions will be organized as dialogues, where the aim is to come to some shared understandings about what challenges and opportunities exist on campus. These will not be information sessions; participants should expect to be engaged in conversation about the issues, rather than just getting information.

to start? Do you find it challenging to figure out how to have the right
conversations with people to form professional connections? Join us for a
dialogue about creating relationships between students and faculty and staff to
generate genuine relationships in the atmosphere of professional academia as
well as how to nurture it after first making a connection.

To Be Involved

Being involved on campus can be
challenging, especially when it comes to making choices about how you want to
be involved, how much, and with whom. This dialogue is focused on the
experience of being involved on campus. There are many different ways to get
involved on campus and within student organizations. The goal is for people to
come together and share experiences about involvement on campus. Come join in
conversation about what it means to be involved on campus in a way that is
healthy and fulfilling.
Rethinking
Research

How
do you get involved in research opportunities on campus? How do you connect
with others around research? This dialogue is focused on staff and students
discussing their involvement with research on campus. The goal is for people
with similar field interests to come together and talk about how they got
involved with research, how to come up with research topics, or current
projects they are doing. Whether you are a research expert or just getting
started, this event can broaden the way we all think about research. Join us
for a conversation about research experiences at UMBC. Each session is tailored
for a different UMBC college (in parentheses below), but all are welcome at
each.

Register to Vote in the 2024 Maryland Primary Election
Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 23
UMBC has a strong tradition of very active participation in state and national elections. This year, Marylanders will elect a new Senator as well as new state and federal legislators, and will participate in electing the President and Vice President of the United States. The Maryland primary election will take place on May 14, 2024. Between now and then, if you are registered to vote in Maryland, you can cast your vote on the UMBC campus by requesting a mail ballot and depositing the completed ballot in the drop-off box located in the lobby of The Commons.
Register to vote: If you are an eligible Maryland resident, you can use the
state's online portal to register. Maryland's deadline to register to vote in advance of the 2024 primary election is April 23. Whether you live in Maryland or not,
UMBC's voter registration portal can help you take the first steps to register and vote in your home state if you are eligible to do so.
Request a mail ballot, then vote in The Commons: Registered Maryland voters can complete an online request for a mail-in ballot
here. Once you have received and completed your ballot, you can submit it by placing it in the official Board of Elections drop-off box in the lobby of The Commons (near the Campus Information Center desk). No postage is necessary. The Board of Elections will pick up ballots placed in the box multiple times each week.
Make a pledge to vote: Every election year,
ALL IN to Vote hosts a Pledge to Vote leaderboard for university students across the country. UMBC placed #4 in the nation on the leaderboard in 2022. Students who plan to vote: Please
take the pledge, and spread the word.
Access Maryland and out-of-state voter resources: Find the latest information, including dates for early voting and deadlines to request mailed and electronic ballots, using the ALL IN to Vote portal hosted on the UMBC Center for Democracy and Civic Life
website.
Serve as election judge: The Baltimore County Board of Elections is
recruiting election judges to work at polling stations during the 2024 primary election. These are paid positions and an important public service.
Participate in civic and community engagement programs: Whether you are eligible to register to vote or not, you have a stake in your communities and can play an important role in shaping them. Follow the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's

RTSS Episode 55: The Social Science of Podcasts
with Dr. Jason Loviglio
On this episode, Dr. Anson speaks with Dr. Jason Loviglio, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at UMBC. Dr. Loviglio is the co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Radio and Podcasting Studies, and recently published a piece about podcasting entitled “From Radio to Podcasting: Intimacy and Massification” that echoes many of the themes in our discussion. Dr. Loviglio is also co-editor of Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast and Audio Media, among many other professional activities related to audio media. He is also a board member at Wide Angle Youth Media, non-profit organization that provides Baltimore youth with media education to tell their own stories and become engaged with their communities.
On this Campus Connection, we hear about a recent book from UMBC Media and Communication Studies Associate Professor Elizabeth Patton. Dr. Patton’s book is entitled Easy Living: The Rise of the Home Office, and explains key recent trends in work and society–both with great relevance to the rise of podcasting!

The Main Campus Political Science Fall Advising List has been posted. Copies are located outside PUP Room 310 and PUP Room 357. Check the list to confirm your assigned faculty advisor. Assigned advisors are also listed on you myUMBC profile. You are required to meet with a department advisor to discuss Fall Classes to have the advising hold lifted from your account. You CANNOT register for Fall classes without an advising meeting regardless of registration appointment time.

CLASS REGISTRATION PROCESS
1. Meet with advisor; receive clearance to enroll

All students are assigned a registration date based on number of EARNED CREDITS; credits in progress do not count toward this number. Your assigned registration appointment is the earliest possible time you can register for Spring Classes.
