She came to UMBC as a transfer student and originally majored in Theatre, but later changed her major to Media and Communication Studies with a minor in Theatre. Arabia graduated 11 years ago in December 2012 and has many accomplishments over the years. Currently residing in Los Angeles, she has worked as an influencer for multiple brands such as Firmoo and Zeelool which are glasses companies, because she also wears glasses and has also modeled for Shein and Romwe on their live accounts. Her biggest accomplishment has been the recent publishing of her first Novel titled  </span><span>But I’m Fine tho: Khadija Parker</span><span> which is available at Barnes &amp; Nobles and Amazon. The novel is a romantic journey of self love and follows the story of Khadija Parker, who is a young woman from Charlotte, North Carolina. Khadija has spent most of her life as a people-pleaser and hopeless romantic and is in hopes of finding her one-true love. On her 25th birthday she was still unmarried, but held out hope because she felt that there were many unforeseen obstacles preventing her from reaching her happily ever after. It wasn’t until reaching her 30’s that a light bulb illuminated making things in her life appear a little clearer for her, which is when Khadija learns to close the revolving door of broken promises and begins to seek her own destiny.</span></p><p><span>What inspired you to write this novel? Arabia recalls she started writing this novel during the pandemic specifically June of 2022 and officially finished in November 2022. She explains she had recently gone through a failed engagement and to cope with the pain she was going through, she began to write. She mentions that one day she “found a gray hair that prompted me to write my feelings of what I felt was a midlife crisis” which relates to her character in her novel who is also suffering a mid-life crisis. Arabia talks about the things that inspire her to write and she mentions her personal life encounters as well as the life encounters of the people around her. She recalls while at UMBC she had a diary which she wrote from about 2011 to 2019. In this diary she would write about the different men she would interact with. These men were not people that she was in a romantic relationship with, but rather people she met at a club or any social setting. “ I wanted to write until I found my husband,” Arabia states. Writing was not only a way of coping for her, but it was also hopeful, that one day maybe her life can look like what she desires and envisions for herself. “Oddly enough I did not find my husband ha ha” Arabia laughs, she mentions how when she does find her husband it will be a fairytale ending as she desires and this vision is seen through how she has written her character, Khadija. </span></p><p><span></span><span>When asked about how the publishing of her first novel personally impacted her life, she mentions how she had conflicting feelings. During the process of writing the novel she stated how she wondered if anyone would be able to relate to her work that is also connected to her own personal life. How would people view her after the publishing of her book, would they see her as Arabia Morgan or as just the author of the book they really enjoy? “A lot of people rather read fairytales and happy endings. I rather write in truth.” Arabia states as these questions plagued her mind because she has now become a writer and these feelings questioned how her image would be seen by the public with this novel and how her personal life is seemingly connected to the story she wrote. One advice Arabia advises to those who wish to write their own novel “to just do it! Don’t worry about the logistics of it yet. You are an artist so go be that artist and CREATE!”</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></span></div>

<Title>Meet Ava Fredrickson!  (MCS Alum)</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>By: Sydney Ashton</span></p><br><p><span>Photo Credit: Gigi Fredrickson</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>An Elkridge, MD native who recently earned her alumni status having graduated from UMBC in May of 2023 with a B.A. in Media and Communications Studies and a minor in Spanish. Post graduation, Ava has embarked on a new and exciting academic journey at the prestigious Georgetown University where she is pursuing a Masters Degree in Communications, Culture, and Technology.</span></p><br><br><p><span>Q. Can you tell me about the program that you’re in?</span></p><br><p><span>My masters is in Communication, Culture, and Technology at Georgetown University. The program is an interdisciplinary program that combines communications, culture, and technology. At Georgetown, masters students have the ability to focus on whatever they would like within that realm, whether it be artificial intelligence, law and policy, education, mental health and social media, or health care.</span></p><br><p><span>Q. How did the MCS program at UMBC prepare you for grad school? Any takeaways or projects/work you’d like to share?</span></p><br><p><span>I think that the MCS program greatly prepared me for this type of program. With understanding of media studies and communications, I feel like I have an understanding of a lot of different topics. Because the program has people focused on many different things, MCS generally prepared me to know a little bit about a lot, while also having something that I also know a lot about. The methods and theory focused classes were absolutely necessary for me to have taken and actually understand, as I use both of those foundations in all my classes.</span></p><p><span>My capstone was on technological determinism and early childhood education, and I have chose to stay in a similar area of study at Georgetown. My capstone focused on the harmful affects of technological determinist approaches to integrating technology into education, especially after Covid-19.</span></p><br><p><span>Q. What do you hope to do with your degree? What are your career goals?</span></p><br><p><span> In the future, I want to go into educational technology production and work for a tech company in their communications or marketing department. I think that attending graduate school now was the right move for me.</span></p><br><p><span>Q. Any advice for MCS students who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree?</span></p><br><p><span>I would definitely recommend being involved in class, forming relationships with professors, and researching a program that best fits you. There are so many masters programs with different focuses and it is important to start looking earlier. I decided on a whim after looking at the post-undergraduate career situation, that it would be better for me to continue my education. I think that MCS prepares students very well for future research opportunities, so use the resources that are there.</span></p><br></span></div>

<Title>Center for Democracy &amp; Civic Life Intern Positions [PAID]</Title>

    <div class="html-content">The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is looking for undergraduate and graduate students to join our team as 2024 - 2025 interns. Interns support the Center's programs and initiatives, working collaboratively with other members of the staff. Each intern has a particular area of focus, but all members of the team are involved in developing and producing the Center's work. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year, with some variation to be determined. Internships will begin in late August 2024 and conclude in May 2025.<br><br>The internships available for 2024 - 2025 are:<br><br><strong>Evaluation intern </strong>(undergraduate and graduate students): Evaluation interns support the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's assessment, evaluation, and research projects; investigate topics related to Center for Democracy and Civic Life programs; and support the Center’s contributions to national higher education initiatives.<br><br><strong>Special projects intern </strong>(undergraduate students only): Special projects interns support the planning and implementation of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life’s programs and initiatives. Tasks may include finding and compiling information, preparing instructional materials, ensuring the availability of program supplies, creating and distributing promotional materials, helping with program setup and cleanup, and guiding and checking in guests at program venues.<br><br><strong>Political engagement intern </strong>(undergraduate and graduate students): Political engagement interns support programs that foster dialogue about current events and issues; connect UMBC students with the legislative process in Annapolis; engage them in politics and pathways to political leadership; and encourage their participation in local, state, and national elections.<br><br>All intern positions pay $15.00/hour to start.<br><br>All undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA are invited to apply. <Title>Center for Democracy &amp; Civic Life Affiliate Positions [PAID]</Title>

    <div class="html-content">The Center for Democracy and Civic Life is seeking undergraduate and graduate students to play leading roles in its 2024 - 2025 programs as affiliates with the Center. Affiliates include Alternative Spring Break (ASB) leaders (undergraduate and graduate students), ConnectionCorps participants (undergraduate and graduate students), and STRiVE coaches (undergraduate students only).<br><br>Applications for affiliate positions are due Thursday, April 4, 2024. <a href="https://forms.gle/H2K5G7mCHNX56tyW7" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Click here to apply</a>. Read on for more information about the positions.<br><br>————————————————————————————————<br><br><strong>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) leaders</strong><br><br>Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a five-day immersive learning experience for undergraduate and graduate UMBC students organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life. During ASB, participants explore the systemic and human dimensions of complex social issues in Baltimore, spending most of the week in small groups focusing on a specific issue or challenge. ASB groups work with community partners, elected officials, and scholars, in part to help participants identify their own pathways to long-term community engagement. ASB 2025 will take place during the week of UMBC’s Spring Break: March 17 - 21, 2025.<br><br>ASB 2025 will be developed by a team of student leaders organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters. Together, the leaders will develop plans for a holistic, empowering ASB experience for participants. ASB leaders will work in pairs to develop small group experiences exploring social issues in Baltimore. Past ASB groups have explored challenges and solutions relating to equitable access to housing, nutritious food, and health care; disability justice; support for youth impacted by intimate partner violence; and a variety of other issues. Leaders can develop an experience relating to one of these topics, or to a new topic they propose.<br><br>The overall time commitment for ASB leaders is approximately 100 hours over the course of the fall 2024 semester, the winter 2025 term, and the spring 2025 semester. For specific meeting and program dates, see the application form.<br><br>ASB leaders receive a $1,250 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 121-03) on their transcripts for fall 2024 and spring 2025.<br><br>All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in ASB.<br><br><br><strong>ConnectionCorps participants</strong><br><br><div>ConnectionCorps is a training program for UMBC undergraduate and graduate students aspiring to build skills in facilitating conversations that encourage authentic connection and democratic participation.</div><div><br> </div><div>During the fall semester, members of the ConnectionCorps cohort participate in weekly training sessions. They also have opportunities throughout the semester to hone their skills by facilitating small group conversations within Center programs. The overall time commitment for the fall portion of ConnectionCorps is approximately 30 hours over the course of the semester. For specific meeting dates, see the application form.</div><div><br></div><div>Fall ConnectionCorps participants will have an opportunity to apply to continue the program in the spring semester to further hone their skills by developing and facilitating their own dialogue programs in consultation with the Center for Democracy and Civic Life team. The application for the spring portion of ConnectionCorps will be released in November 2024.</div><div><br></div><div>ConnectionCorps participants receive a $250 stipend during the fall portion of the program. ConnectionCorps participants selected to be a part of the spring portion of the program will receive an additional $750 stipend.</div><div><br></div>All undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply. (Important: This application is only for the fall portion of ConnectionCorps. Applicants do not need to commit now to applying for the second portion in the spring.)<br><br><br><strong>STRiVE coaches</strong><br><br>STRiVE is an immersive five-day leadership for public purpose program for UMBC undergraduate students organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life in partnership with the Student Government Association. STRiVE helps inspire and support students in becoming more effective leaders and contributors to their communities, especially the UMBC community. STRiVE participants develop friendships; discover their strengths and values; learn how to work more effectively in groups; envision contributions they could make at UMBC; engage issues relating to identity, privilege, and systemic oppression; and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. STRiVE 2025 will take place from January 13 - 17, 2025.<br><br>STRiVE 2025 will be facilitated by a team of staff and undergraduate student coaches organized and trained by Center for Democracy and Civic Life staff during weekly meetings in the fall 2024 semester. Together, the coaches will rehearse sessions and make plans for an intensive, engaging STRiVE experience for participants. Each student coach will be paired with a staff coach to facilitate activities for a closely-knit small group (a “pod”) that will meet regularly during STRiVE. Coaches will be trained to facilitate pod and large group sessions.<br><br>The overall time commitment for STRiVE coaches is approximately 100 hours over the course of fall 2024 semester and winter 2025 term. For specific meeting and program dates, see the application form.<br><br>STRiVE coaches receive a $1,000 stipend and a zero credit practicum notification (PRAC 121-04) on their transcript for winter 2025.<br><br>All undergraduate students are invited to apply. <Title>APPLY NOW: CoLab Narrative-Based Paid Summer Internship</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>
    			<p>CoLab is a 4-week <span><strong>paid</strong></span>
     summer narrative-based research internship for UMBC undergraduates. 
    Student interns will work on interdisciplinary project teams to conduct 
    research, create effective narratives, and develop public-facing final 
    products that support the goals of on and off campus community 
    organizations and scholars. Open to all majors, this is an excellent 
    opportunity for students in <strong>STEM</strong> fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in <strong>social science and humanities</strong> fields to gain research and technical skills.</p>
    <p><strong>Participants receive a $3000 stipend and a tuition scholarship for a 3-credit internship course.</strong></p>
    <p><strong>Program Dates</strong><br>
    CoLab 2024 will be held during Summer Session One and meets in-person from <strong>Monday, June 3rd through Friday, June 28th</strong>.
     PLEASE NOTE: During these dates, student interns are required to 
    dedicate Monday through Friday from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm to the in-person 
    internship.</p>

Please note that it is not necessary for a student to be a member of Pi Sigma Alpha in order to participate. </div><div><br></div><div>Conference presenters usually present research that they have completed as a <strong>poster</strong> that they display on an easel to their visitors. The posters are made in <u>Microsoft's Powerpoint</u>. It's a wonderful opportunity for you to disseminate your research and discuss your ideas to a larger audience. In addition, students often use this conference to prepare for their presentations at URCAD (Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day), which will take place one week later on April 10th. </div><div><br></div><div><strong> Also, the UMBC Omicron Eta Pi Sigma Alpha group has received funding from the national organization of Pi Sigma Alpha to cover the costs associated with your participation in the conference, including the printing and mounting of your poster on a posterboard and lunch the day of the conference.</strong> Once we know who is participating, we will distribute information about how to make a poster in Powerpoint and if there is enough interest we will also hold a workshop. </div><div><br></div><div>Please consider participating if you have a strong paper from a class or other research experience that you would like to present! It's a wonderful experience for everyone - for presenters and visitors alike. </div><div><br></div></div>
