Diva Moreira is a Brazilian political scientist and activist on social issues primarily concerning race, feminism, and the working class since the 1960's. She founded Casa Dandara, a cultural center promoting black self-esteem and leadership, for which she was awarded an Ashoka Fellowship.
She will be visiting campus on October 4th as part of the Language, Literacy, and Culture Program's Black in the Americas series.

Applications for the Spring 2024 Policy, Politics, and Public Administration Internship Program are due by October 25th, 2023.
This internship program gives students an opportunity to observe and participate in political processes, policymaking, and/or the management of organizations providing public services. Interns also practice important professional skills. While duties vary by position, they often include legislative and policy research, database management, and communication with constituents or other stakeholders.
Students in this program receive individual assistance with identifying specific opportunities that can include, when appropriate, direct contacts made on the student's behalf to potential internship sites.
Juniors and seniors with GPAs of 3.0 and above are eligible to apply for the Policy, Politics, and Public Administration Internship Program. The application should be emailed to that program's coordinator, Professor Meghan Lynch, at mlyn1@umbc.edu . The application consists of:
- A one-page cover letter. This letter should explain your interest in the internship program, describe the type of internship you hope to obtain, and highlight skills, qualities or experiences that you would bring to your internship site.
- Your resume.
- The most current copy of your unofficial transcript. New transfer students will need to submit a validated copy of their transcript from their former institution.
- At least two recommendations from faculty. . Recommendations need only to be brief, informal emails and should be sent from faculty to Professor Lynch
- A personal interview, to be arranged after the rest of the application is received.

On behalf of Colonel Suzanne Nielsen, the Head of the Department of Social Sciences, I am delighted to invite your program to nominate a student delegate for the 74th Annual Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA 74). This esteemed event will be held at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, starting on the evening of November 1st and concluding at noon on November 4th.
A hallmark event, SCUSA stands as the oldest and most extensive conference of its kind, fostering civil-military engagement among upcoming leaders. Upholding its tradition of excellence, SCUSA 74 will see participation from 60 Cadet delegates, 200 students from over 100 U.S. institutions, including international affiliates spanning various academic domains. The program will feature a senior panel discussion, a keynote by Presidential Envoy on Climate Change, John Kerry, four roundtable sessions, and a closing session with presentations on U.S. foreign policy recommendations.

SCUSA 74's theme is "Innovation and the Future of American Foreign Policy." The 21st century continues to present obstacles to American leadership. How can the United States innovate to tackle pressing challenges of domestic and foreign policy? How will American institutions promote innovation to support democracy and economic development at home while bolstering American soft and hard power abroad? How effectively will America's international partners-and America's competitors-employ emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and renewable energy, to advance competing visions of the future? Technology is not the only factor driving as well as facilitating innovation. Private sector entities, governmental departments and agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and multilateral institutions operate in demanding and dynamic political, social, and economic contexts. Advancing American interests and values in a competitive global environment will require innovative organizations, approaches, and practices. The 15 roundtables of SCUSA 74 will discuss how innovation may occur and how the presence or absence of change will affect American values and interests in the coming decades.

REMINDER: Alumni Mentoring Sign Up Deadline is Today! 9/20
Take the survey to be paired with an Alumni Mentor
This program is aimed at pairing current political science students with alumni of the program. Our hope is that this program will lead to fruitful connections between you and alumni that are putting their knowledge and skills to work across sectors. With more than 60 alumni from varied personal and professional backgrounds we invite you to apply to the mentor/mentee program.
While there is no obligation to participate, but if you believe you might be interested in this program, please complete the following survey by Wednesday, September 20th, 2023. This survey is aimed at providing you with the best mentor based on your interests.
The pairing of mentor/mentee connections may take a few weeks, but if you have questions, feel free to reach out to Dr. Eric Stokan at estokan@umbc.edu.
