Book Manuscript Workshops offer faculty the opportunity to share a nearly complete manuscript with a small audience of experts and receive constructive feedback. The aim of the Workshop is to transform an already excellent scholarly project into an even better publishable book. Faculty will invite three expert readers from outside UMBC to read the full book manuscript (or significant sections) and offer their feedback in both written form and in a 2-3 hour workshop (usually held remotely). Some faculty authors may also wish to include a scholarly press editor in the workshop. Formal guidelines for workshop structure and suggestions for budgeting are available from the Dresher Center. Up to $5000 will be available to each applicant to support the workshop.

Faculty members who wish to workshop an in-progress book manuscript should submit:
  1. A one-page summary of the book project, including a schedule for completion. Applicants should also include a statement indicating whether the work is under contract with a press or provide a list of potential publishers.
  2. A one-page narrative explaining why and how this opportunity will be important to the process of completing the book. If appropriate, applicants should include a brief statement about their plans for tenure and/or promotion, including timelines
  3. A list of potential outside experts.
  4. A current curriculum vitae.
  5. A firm date for completion of the book manuscript. Manuscripts must be substantially complete before submission to outside readers.
All full-time faculty writing humanities-related books are eligible to apply. Junior faculty or those preparing for promotion are especially encouraged. In order to allow sufficient time for expert review, faculty should submit Book Manuscript Workshop applications 4-6 months in advance of the planned workshop.

Earlier this year, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced an Outreach and Engagement Initiative for Aspiring PIs with a goal to increase the number of cybersecurity education and workforce development-related proposals submitted to EDU programs by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Predominately Black Institutions (PBIs), and investigators who are underrepresented in accordance with NSF's priority goals. The activities include webinars, 1-1 and small group mentoring sessions, and engaging non-profit organizations that support black communities in cybersecurity awareness and privacy issues.

 

In continuation of this effort, NSF is organizing a virtual Aspiring PI Engagement Session on Sept 7th from 9:30 to 12 PM.

Undergraduate Data Science Scholars - Call for Applications

Have you worked with social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data?

Are you interested in how to extract useful knowledge from data?

The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is partnering with the UMBC Department of Information Systems for the UMBC Undergraduate Data Science Scholars Program (DSS) in fall 2022. Students admitted to the program will work as teaching fellows (TFs) and peer mentors. They will also network with UC Berkeley data science students, attend special events, and be mentored by faculty. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including the social sciences, looking at all aspects of data and its impact on society.

Responsibilities: 

  • Scholars will work as TFs and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS296 Foundations of Data Science. The class meets Mo/We 1-2:15 pm. The cohort of DSS scholars will meet as a group with the IS296 instructor. Scholars will be paid $15/hour for specific TF tasks, for 5-10 hours per week in Fall 2022.
  • Social science DSS scholars will attend at least two CS3 events in Fall 2022 and/or participate in research initiatives with social science faculty. The scholars will also be expected to attend one mentoring meeting with CS3 faculty.

Background and skills:

Applicants should have knowledge in at least one of the following:

  • Analysis of social, behavioral, economic, or geographic data
  • Python or one of the data science tools and/or languages (such as Rapid Miner, Weka, Orange, Knime, ML on cloud computing, python)
  • Jupyter notebooks with python or taken IS 296 in a prior semester.

While CS3 will run the admission and mentoring of the social science cohort of DSS, the Department of Information Systems is also partnering with the Center for Women in Technology to run another cohort.
