The Office of Councilman Pat Young is looking for a part-time legislative intern to assist the office during the Spring 2023 semester. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with a real-world learning opportunity, which should
prepare them to be workforce ready upon graduation. Additionally, students will receive the opportunity to develop experience in intergovernmental lobbying, advocacy, the State's legislative process, and professional correspondence on behalf of elected officials.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Be actively attending an accredited college or university.
- Be either an undergraduate student in their junior or senior year, or a graduate student.
- Have at least a 2.8 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the undergraduate level, or at least a 3.0 GPA at the graduate level. Note: A college transcript is required as evidence of GPA. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
- The internship will be in person or can follow a hybrid model.
- Must be able to commit 10 hours per week to the internship.

Seeking Graduate Research Assistant
for grant-funded literacy research project
We are seeking an organized graduate student to serve as a Research
Assistant to aid in a grant-funded research project. You will support the
project by completing literature searches and reviews to identify factors
impacting elementary literacy achievement, with the goal of identifying data
sets to bring into a virtual reality (VR)
environment for future teachers at the Imaging
Research Center. You will be a part of a passionate, knowledgeable
cross-disciplinary research team.
Responsibilities
include:
- Conducting literature searches using appropriate databases
- Summarizing and synthesizing results of literature review
- Participation in research team meetings and ongoing project discussions
- Detailed documentation of literature review process and organization of literature and findings
- Research into the availability of identified data sets of interest
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written
communication skills
- Ability to develop, organize, and
maintain systems to manage projects
- Experience within the field of education
(school or community-based work with youth) and an asset-based orientation to
students, families, and communities
- Experience with academic research
(using databases, conducting literature reviews, managing data, etc.)
We are seeking someone for 10-15 hours per week for the
semester, with the possibility of extending through the summer. Pay is
$22/hour.

Women's Center Returning Adult Learners 2023-24 Scholarships
Accepting Applications Friday, April 7th, 2023!
The Women's Center's Returning Adult Learners Scholarships Application for 2023-24 is available now via Scholarship Retriever to undergraduate students who meet the eligibility requirements.
The deadline for submission via Scholarship Retriever is Friday, April 8, 2023.
This common application which is called Women's Center: Returning Adult Learners 2023-2024 in Scholarship Retriever enables eligible students to apply for more than one of the Returning Adult Learner Scholarships with just one submission. Please note that this opportunity to apply will only appear in Scholarship Retriever to students who meet the scholarship qualifications. The six available scholarships via the Returning Adult Learner Scholarship Application are:
- Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship & The UMBC Scholarship for Returning Adult Learners
- Jodi Mister/Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship
- Charlotte W. Newcombe STEM Scholarship
- AEGON Scholarship
- The Richard & Roselyn Bryson Neville Memorial Fund for Returning Women Scholarship
- The Rosalie Tydings Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship
Undergraduate students of any gender over the age of 25 and with at least 60 credits and 2.5 GPA may be eligible. Students must be completing their first undergraduate degree.
If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship opportunity will not appear on Scholarship Retriever. Students who have not completed the FAFSA will not see the opportunity in Scholarship Retriever. Students who wish to still be considered despite not meeting these requirements should contact the Women's Center directly. This encouragement to reach out directly to the Women's Center extends to students who have extenuating circumstances (i.e. students who are DACA/undocumented) that may prevent them from completing the FAFSA.
Students who are selected to be scholars are required to participate in the Returning Adult Learners Scholars + Affiliates program. For more information about the program, visit our website and be sure to attend an information session.

PAID Summer Opportunity at Georgetown
Apply by March 6th for the Pre-Doctoral Summer Institute
The Government Department at Georgetown University will host its second annual one-week Political Science Predoctoral Summer Institute (PS-PSI) from June 12 to 16, 2023.
Applications are open now and close on March 6th.
The goals of the PS-PSI are to increase the diversity of applicants to political science PhD programs, boost the acceptance rate of under-represented students, enhance the diversity of students in those programs, and augment inclusion and equity in the discipline.
The PS-PSI pays for your travel expenses and for your lodging at Georgetown, and provides you with a $1,000 stipend. We offer you relevant materials in advance of the PS-PSI to help you prepare; provide the materials you will use at the Institute; and connect you with excellent resources to help you continue your path forward after the Institute
The PS-PSI will include substantive elements (e.g., introducing the content and methods of political science) and practical elements (e.g., assisting participants to prepare strong applications for graduate programs). Participants will also share their ideas about research directions. The PS-PSI will involve significant mentoring and networking with current faculty and PhD students from Georgetown.
Rising juniors and seniors majoring in political science or related fields at colleges and universities in DC, DE, MD, VA, and WV are welcome to apply to the PS-PSI. PS-PSI is designed for those students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in political science.

Public Affairs (PUB) 300: Global Community Engagement & Social Change in South AfricaJuly 27 - August 13, 2023
3 credits
Course description: PUB 300 will engage students in academic, experiential and intercultural learning in and about South Africa. The course will focus on contemporary social challenges and the strategies that government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and citizen activists are using to address them.
Course activities include:- Service-learning with local NGOs
- Meetings with activists, NGO leaders and government officials
- Visits to sites of historical and cultural significance, including Parliament, the District 6 Museum, Table Mountain, and the surrounding Western Cape region
- Experiential learning activities including language, culture and cooking workshops
- A safari and overnight stay at the Aquila Game Reserve

The Conversation U.S. (TCUS) invites you to "Crafting a Strong Pitch," a Zoom session for scholars and communications partners at member schools who are interested in learning more about pitching and writing with us.
Please note that this session is held quarterly. Anyone is welcome to attend, but we especially encourage scholars who have not yet written for TCUS (or those seeking a refresher) to sign up, as well as any new communications partners who are interested in learning more about best practices for pitching to TCUS.
Our goal is to provide a better understanding of The Conversation's pitch process, what makes a great pitch and how to concisely convey your story idea to our editors.
