    <p><span>This workshop will cover all funding sources for seed and early stage</span></p>
    <p><span>companies from idea to acquisition.  It will also include crowdfunding,</span></p>
    <p><span>specifically GoFundMe and Kickstarter.  Don���������t miss it!</span></p>
    <br><p><span>A little bit about John Kirby:</span></p>
    <br><p><span>John has worked the majority of his business career as an entrepreneur in</span></p>
    <p><span>small and midsize companies.  Along the way, he founded and sold two</span></p>
    <p><span>companies.  A highlight was the sale of reachNET, a company he co-founded. </span></p>
    <p><span>The company developed a wireless TTY for the deaf community and was sold</span></p>
    <p><span>in 2001 to Telecommunication Systems (NASDAQ: TSYS).</span></p>
    <br><p><span>He and his teams have mentored tech companies, been involved in tech</span></p>
    <p><span>transfer from government and education to the private sector and assisted</span></p>
    <p><span>veteran-led companies.  John���������s current company is Boat School Ventures,</span></p>
    <p><span>which mentors and raises capital for early stage startups.  He is also an</span></p>
    <p><span>Adjunct Professor teaching Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland</span></p>
    <p><span>Baltimore County (UMBC).</span></p>
    <br><p><span>John was born and raised in Catonsville MD, and earned a BS degree from</span></p>
    <p><span>the United States Naval Academy and an Executive MBA from Loyola</span></p>
    <p><span>University.  He is a veteran having served five years in the US Marine</span></p>
    <p><span>Corps.</span></p>

<Title>Spring 2021 Scholarship/Seed Funding Opportunity!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>PNC SCHOLARS/FELLOWS PROGRAM</span></p>
    <br><p><span>The PNC Scholars/Fellows Program provides awards up to $2,000 to outstanding UMBC students interested in becoming an entrepreneur. The scholarship will be awarded for the 2021-2022 academic year. The awards will be used as academic scholarships (up to $1,000), or as “seed funding” (up to $2,000) to launch new ventures or community based social entrepreneurship projects.  </span></p>
    <br><p><span>CRITERIA:</span></p>
    <br><ul><li><p><span>Submit a 1-2 page of a personal statement about their interest in entrepreneurship.  The statement should:</span></p></li></ul>
    <br><ul><li><p><span>Describe the impact an academic scholarship will have on their future as an entrepreneur or social innovator or</span></p></li></ul>
    <br><ul><li><p><span>Describe how the award money will be used as “seed funding” to launch a new venture, or “seed funding” to launch a community based social entrepreneurship project.  Submit a preliminary budget outlining anticipated expenses.</span></p></li></ul>

    <br><ul><li><p><span>Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 </span></p></li></ul>

<Title>USM Public Health Challenge</Title>

    <br><p><span>USM has launched a </span><a href="https://www.usmd.edu/covid-taskforce/public-health-challenge" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Public Health Challenge</span></a><span>, seeking short videos and social campaign messages to help people and communities avoid “pandemic fatigue” and recommit themselves to public health practices. The top three winners in each category will each receive $3,000.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni from all USM institutions. Individuals or teams may apply. Submissions are due Jan. 25, 2021, so it's a great project for folks to work on during winter break. </span></p>
