The new semester is officially in full swing, and the Sherman Center is here to help you navigate it successfully!!
With the wintry conditions that delayed our in-person start by a week, it might feel like we're already racing to catch up. But as we transition from "winter mode" back into the swing of the spring semester, remember that it's okay to take a moment to find your footing. We may be starting a little later than planned, but we are moving forward together, and we will surely find our rhythm in no time.

Master Your Time - Now is the perfect time to get those sticky notes out  and map out your priorities. Breaking down your semester now prevents the "mid-semester crunch" later.

Health is Wealth - Academic success is only possible when you take care of yourself. Prioritize rest, stay hydrated, and don't hesitate to lean on your community for support.

As you settle into your new schedule, here are a few things to keep in mind for a successful start:

Important Deadline: The last day to add or drop classes is February 13th. Take this week to ensure your course load feels balanced and manageable.

The Reach Together Tutoring Program is officially recruiting motivated UMBC students to serve as Math Coaches for the Spring 2026 semester!

Why Join Us?

As a Math Coach, you aren't just a tutor—you are a mentor. You'll provide targeted math intervention to elementary and middle school students, helping them build the confidence they need to succeed.


We are looking for dynamic individuals who can commit to the following:

  • Who: UMBC students.

  • Commitment: 2–3 times per week (45–60 minutes per session).

  • When: During the school day, through May 2026.

  • Where: Local elementary and middle schools (Grades 1–8)

Help us bridge the gap in math education. Your skills can change a student's academic trajectory.

Behind the Sherman Teacher Scholars Program at UMBC is a story of two people who believed that education is the most powerful tool for social justice.
George, a brilliant business leader and engineer, and Betsy, a passionate educator who began her career as Kentucky's first Head Start teacher, shared a simple but profound belief: Every child deserves an exceptional education.

George and Betsy Sherman didn't just want to fund a program, they wanted to spark a movement. By blending George's belief in excellence and Betsy's deep-rooted passion for early childhood education, they redefined what it means to support urban schools.

The Legacy they Built:
The Shermans shifted the narrative from "charity" to partnership. Because of George and Betsy, the connection between UMBC and Baltimore City schools has evolved into a national model for collaboration. They proved that when you invest in the person "leading instruction", you change the future of every student in the room.

We are eternally grateful for their warmth, their wisdom, and their unwavering belief that every child can succeed when given the right champion.
