<Title>Emberson part of DRCS Team that Received 2024 Blue Marble Award</Title>

    <p>Three Goddard teams were recipients of a 2024 Blue Marble
    Award, among them the NASA Disasters Response Coordination System Team of which
    <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-a-f/#Emberson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Robert Emberson</a> (617/UMBC) is a member. The team was a “recipient in the
    category of Resilience or Climate Change Adaptation for outstanding
    contribution to science-based disaster response and resiliency planning.” Created
    in 2006, the Blue Marble Award recognizes personnel who demonstrate environmental leadership
    in carrying out the agency’s mission.<span> </span>The award ceremony was held October 8, 2024, at the NASA 2024
    Environmental Operational Meeting at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston,
    TX. Congratulations!</p>
    
    <p>We asked Dr. Emberson for more information on the Disasters
    Program and the <a href="https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/2024-06/DRCS%201-PAGER%2005-30-2024.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Disaster Response Coordination System</a>:
    “I am one of the Associate Program Managers for the Disasters Program at NASA HQ,
    which supports both funded research projects as well as a range of
    agencies to inform decisions relating to Disaster response. I’ve been involved
    in various capacities in the disaster response support work for the past 5
    years, but this year the program has formalized these activities into the Disaster
    Response Coordination System, an expanded way to leverage NASA assets to

    2024 NASA news feature</a>.</p>
    
    <p>The Disasters Program provides resources via Earth observing
    data to aid and inform emergency management decision-makers; most recently,
    they’ve been activated in response to Hurricanes Milton and Helene. The DRCS is
    featured in <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/general/nasa-activates-resources-to-help-assess-impacts-from-hurricane-milton/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">this article on nasa.gov</a> regarding the devastation from Hurricane
    Milton and how NASA is providing FEMA and state agencies with resources. The DRCS team also utilizes the <a href="https://disasters-nasa.hub.arcgis.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NASA Disasters Portal</a>, which “provides access to a range of data sources for our response activities.”

<Title>Seegers shares Sailing for Science experience in PACE-PAX blog post</Title>

    <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-r-z/#Seegers" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Bridget Seegers</a> (616/MSU) recently contributed the blog post, <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/blogs/fromthefield/2024/09/24/twenty-one-hours-a-day-on-30-foot-floating-science-lab/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"Twenty-one Hours a Day on a 30-Foot Floating Science Lab,"</a> to Notes from the Field for the <a href="https://espo.nasa.gov/pace-pax/content/PACE-PAX" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PACE-PAX</a> field campaign.<div><br></div>
    <div>In San Diego, California, Dr. Seegers and fellow scientist Gordon Ackland recently spent five days on the sailboat-turned-research vessel RV Blissfully, collecting ocean water samples and instrument readings in order to compare data with that of the PACE satellite. On a daily basis, "The destination, 12 miles (20 kilometers) south, is an oil rig that is home to additional research instruments whose data will be combined with RV Blissfully’s data for a more complete picture of conditions in the atmosphere and ocean. The location is also a flyover target for the ER-2 and Twin Otter research planes, allowing for even more data sets for PACE validation." Dr. Seegers provides an engaging perspective of research out at sea, and she adds, "Accomplishing PACE-PAX research on RV Blissfully made the sailing for science dream a reality."</div>

<Title>Huang's NASA Proposal Selected for Funding</Title>

    <div>The proposal titled “Tracking Sea Level Rise in American Samoa with Ultra-High-Resolution SAR Imagery: An Umbra Feasibility Study,” of which <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-g-k/#Huang" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Stacey Huang</a> (61A/UMBC) is PI, has been selected for funding by NASA. The project team includes Dr. Huang along with Co-Is <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-g-k/#Jo" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MinJeong Jo</a> (618/UMBC), Jeanne Sauber, and Kelly Anderson Tagarino, and Collaborator Carla Baizeau. The period of performance is 8/1/24 - 7/31/25.</div>

    <div>Dr. Huang provided the following information about this grant:</div>
    <div>"The goal of this research is to assess the utility of using high-resolution commercial SAR data from Umbra to characterize the extent of coastal flooding and ongoing post-seismic subsidence in American Samoa. This work has key implications for understanding the consequences of continued sea level rise in the island and will be used to better understand how commercial SAR assets can contribute to important science questions regarding sea level rise, especially in the southwest Pacific."</div>

    <div>Abstract: </div>
    <div>"Researchers, citizen scientists, and activists alike have focused attention on the disproportionate exposure to outdoor air pollution experienced by marginalized population groups in the United States, particularly by Black and Brown communities. In this talk, I present several recent studies that document this disproportionate exposure and the associated burden of disease as well as probe the emission sources and activities responsible for this form of environmental injustice. I focus specifically on two ubiquitous air pollutants–nitrogen dioxide, a component of smog, and fine particulate matter, commonly referred to as soot–and leverage novel, high-resolution datasets that combine the strengths of satellite remote sensing and detailed computer models. My results span the causal chain, linking policy and land-use practices with public health and economic damages, and can inform the development of policies that equitably reduce health-harming pollution." </div>

    <div>Biography:</div>
    <div>Dr. Gaige Kerr (he/him) is an assistant research professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. Dr. Kerr researches air pollution, and projects he has led span topics ranging from understanding the emission sources of pollution to assessing the health impacts experienced by impacted populations, with a special emphasis on understanding associated ethnoracial and socioeconomic disparities. His research uses a wide variety of tools and methods, including remote sensing, atmospheric chemistry models and other numerical models, exposure assessment, and spatial statistical techniques. He received his BSc with honors in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University and his MA and PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University.</div>

<Title>GESTAR II awarded two-year extension on cooperative agreement with NASA GSFC</Title>

    <div class="html-content">In fall 2021, UMBC was awarded $72 million by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to establish GESTAR II for three years. This cooperative agreement includes Morgan State University as a primary partner, as well as Penn State University, Arizona State University, Colorado State University, Southeast Universities Research Association (SURA), Earth Resources Technology, Inc. (ERT), and industry partner Northrop Grumman. GESTAR II consists of ~150 researchers throughout the earth science division at NASA GSFC. This year, NASA GSFC awarded UMBC $47 million for a two-year extension of GESTAR II, through 2026. <Title>Shuman contributes to Earth Observatory IOTD</Title>

    <div class="html-content">In a recent Earth Observatory Item of the Day (IOTD), <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-r-z/#Shuman" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Christopher Shuman</a> (615/UMBC) contributed to the discussion about Iceberg A-83. <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/153316/a-winter-wanderer-in-the-weddell-sea" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"A Winter Wanderer in the Weddell Sea"</a> is a feature about this particular iceberg, which broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf in May 2024. While originally stuck in thick sea ice, the iceberg has had pieces break off and has made progress in its journey.     <div>Congratulations to <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-l-q/#Orland" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Eli Orland</a> (617/UMBC), who has been promoted from Research Associate I to Research Associate II within GESTAR II! We asked him about the research he conducts as part of the Hydrological Sciences Laboratory<a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/earth/hydrology/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> (Code 617)</a> at NASA GSFC.</div>

    <div>"My research focuses on the ways that fire alters the hydrologic cycle of a landscape. I specifically target the risks of "cascading" natural hazards after wildfire, such as flash flooding, debris flows, and landslides. I take a unique approach: by utilizing satellite observations of wildfire, my research investigates the links between direct measurements of an active fire—such as spread rate, intensity, and persistence—with impacts to vegetation and soil. ​In doing so, I aim to reduce the time needed to make assessments of burn severity and more rapidly allocate resources for emergency response." </div>

    <div>As for his free time, Mr. Orland enjoys trail running, riding his bike, and playing music.</div>

<Title>Collow is lead author on two NASA GSFC GMAO Science Snapshots</Title>

    <div class="html-content">In response to recent events, <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-a-f/#Collow" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Allie Collow</a> (610.1/UMBC), along with fellow co-authors, created two highlights that were selected as Science Snapshots by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office <a href="https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(GMAO)</a> at NASA Goddard.<div><br></div>
    <div>The first highlight, titled <a href="https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/research/science_snapshots/2024/HottestDay_Aug2024/HottestDay.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"The Hottest July on Earth as Analyzed by MERRA-2,"</a> is authored by Dr. Collow, <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-r-z/#Thomas" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Natalie Thomas</a> (610.1/UMBC), Mike Bosilovich, and Peter Jacobs. The researchers "take this [MERRA-2] analysis a step further to identify regions that were large contributors to the record-breaking heat in July as well as the connection to heatwaves. This is of particular importance due to differing impacts of heat to ocean ecosystems and human populated land surfaces." </div>

    <div>The second highlight, titled <a href="https://gmao.gsfc.nasa.gov/research/science_snapshots/2024/Saharan_Dust_Aug2024/Saharan_Dust.php" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"July - August 2024 Saharan Dust Transport,"</a> is authored by Dr. Collow, <a href="https://gestar2.umbc.edu/directory/researchers-g-k/#Joshi" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Janak Joshi</a> (610.1/UMBC), and Bennett Erdman. Through the use of GMAO models (GEOS and GEOS-FP) along with satellite and ground-based measurements, the researchers can study the effects of the transport of the dust in the Saharan Air Layer, as it travels over the Atlantic to North and South America, and parts of the Caribbean. "Tracking this transport is crucial because the dust not only benefits marine life by supplying essential nutrients, but also harms humans by posing respiratory and cardiovascular health risks."</div>
