<Title>Catching up with Dan Anderson</Title>

    <div>The Asian Summer Monsoon Chemical and Climate Impact Project (ACCLIP) was a one-month campaign conducted in South Korea during August 2022. GESTAR II scientists <a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/daniel.c.anderson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Daniel Anderson</a> (614/UMBC) along with <a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/jason.m.stclair" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Jason St. Clair</a> (614/UMBC) were two of several scientists providing field support for the ISAF instrument, and <a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/k.e.knowland" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Emma Knowland</a> (610.1/MSU) was one of the scientists who assisted with aerosol and chemistry forecasts for flight planning and analysis. We caught up with Dr. Anderson to learn more about ACCLIP and the ISAF (In Situ Airborne Formaldehyde instrument).</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>First, to clarify: "Field support for the ISAF involved confirming that the instrument was working, processing the data, and fixing any problems that may have arisen."</div>
    <div>Next, the ACCLIP timeline: "It essentially lasted all of August. The first flight based out of South Korea was on August 3 and the last was September 1. A total of 15 flights were based out of Korea, in addition to 2 flights in Houston in July. Jason and I were there for the second half."</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The goal of the mission and why this particular location was selected: "The overall goal of the mission is to understand how the Asian Summer monsoon system affects atmospheric composition in the upper troposphere (the layer of the atmosphere where we live and where weather happens) and the stratosphere (where the ozone layer is). In the upper atmosphere, the monsoon system is centered over Tibet, where NASA cannot fly. Instead, the flights were designed to measure outflow of the system. South Korea was chosen because it is downwind of the monsoon system as well as for practical purposes (i.e., it's easier for NASA to fly a plane from there than most other East Asian countries). </div>
    <div>In addition to the monsoon goal, there was also a flight where we flew over a super typhoon, which had maximum winds equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane. The idea there is similar, in that we were trying to understand how typhoons/hurricanes can transport surface air to the upper atmosphere. The NASA portion of this was flown on the WB57 aircraft, which is a two-seater plane (a pilot and a science officer), and focused primarily on altitudes around 45,000 - 60,000 feet (altitudes well above where normal passenger airplanes fly)."</div>

    <div>Understanding ISAF's role in ACCLIP: "The ISAF instrument measures formaldehyde. In the atmosphere. Formaldehyde can be directly emitted (normally by fires, burning fossil fuels, and some consumer goods) or most of the time it's produced in the atmosphere when other chemicals break down. It generally doesn't last long (~2-3 hours) in the air, so most of the time, at altitudes where the WB57 flies, you see almost nothing. But when you have a large storm or ... a monsoon that can bring a lot of air from the surface much higher in the atmosphere, it can increase formaldehyde by ~10 times. For ACCLIP, the formaldehyde measurements help identify air that has recently been transported into the upper atmosphere. You can also use formaldehyde, in conjunction with measurements of other species, to understand more about the chemistry of the upper atmosphere."</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Finally, post-campaign plans: "The next steps are finalizing the data and then analysis. A science team meeting will be held in November, where people will start sharing preliminary results."</div>

    <div class="html-content">On October 12, 2022, at the annual Earth Sciences Division's Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Geophysics Peer Awards Ceremony at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, <a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/denis.felikson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Denis Felikson</a> (615/MSU) received a Peer Award in Scientific Achievement: "For Being A Champion of Open Sea Level Science."<div><br></div>
    <div>Dr. Felikson was nominated for his "skill in leadership while leading the Earth Information System Sea Level Change pilot study last summer/fall, paving the way for the future of how we as a community do sea level science.     <div><strong>Abstract:</strong></div>
    <div>This seminar will provide a broad overview of recent and ongoing air quality research related to both wildfires and agriculture. They will highlight examples of how in situ observations have been combined with satellite observations and models to investigate both fundamental atmospheric science problems and enable applications ranging from epidemiology to economics.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Biographies:</strong></div>
    <div>Drs. Jeffrey Pierce and Emily Fischer are both professors in the Atmospheric Science Department at Colorado State University. They work collaboratively across many different projects and both are members of the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Science Team (HAQAST). Dr. Fischer received her PhD in Atmospheric Science from University of Washington, and she did a postdoc at Harvard University. Dr. Pierce received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and he did a postdoc at NASA GSFC. Their groups use satellites, in situ measurements, and models to investigate a wide range of topics, ranging from pollution exposure and health; gas and aerosol chemistry and physics; and climate impacts.  </div>

    <div><strong>Abstract: </strong></div>
    <div>
    <div>Satellite precipitation programs often emphasize the need for (a) validating products and (b) reporting uncertainties that are essential for the proper adoption of these products. This has resulted in a long list of validation efforts and campaigns dating back to the earliest VIS/IR products and generally compare in-situ precipitation to the equivalent satellite product for a specific mission. When these studies are viewed not as individual efforts or campaigns, but in their totality, however, it becomes fairly obvious that satellite products have very different validation statistics in different regions and time periods.  That is, satellite products have a large dependence on the atmospheric state that is neither random nor systematic but varies with meteorological regimes.  This is the direct result of the under-constrained nature of cloud and precipitation retrievals that must be dealt with to project validation results from one region or one regime to another. While sensors with greater information content and algorithms that more fully exploit all available information can ameliorate this problem, they cannot eliminate it. This talk will illustrate these points, and make a case for a new, state-dependent validation approach that can lead to credible predictions of products and their uncertainties in areas that lack conventional data.</div>

    <div><strong>Biography:</strong></div>
    </div>
    <div>Christian D. Kummerow is a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University. His research interests include radiation, remote sensing, and the global water cycle and its uncertainties, including how these relate to physical aspects of the atmosphere and thus the fundamental processes underlying precipitation. Prior to joining Colorado State University, he worked at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center serving as the project scientist for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and as a study scientist for the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM). Dr. Kummerow is currently on the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer Science Team as well as the team lead for GPM's passive microwave algorithm team. He was awarded the NASA Goddard Exceptional Achievement Award and Maryland's Distinguished Young Scientist Award. In addition to being the CIRA director, he has been a chair and member of the GEWEX Data and Assessments Panel, and the NASA Earth Science Subcommittee. He served on the Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications from Space: Panel on Global Hydrological Cycles and Water Resources, and recently co-chaired the National Academy of Sciences' panel on Lessons Learned in the Implementation of NASA's Earth Venture Class (2022). He received his Ph.D. in atmospheric physics from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.</div>
