Seeking Applicants: UMD Post-Doctoral Associate in Asian American Studies
The Asian American Studies Program at the University of Maryland, College Park seeks applicants for the Calvin J. Li Fellowship in Asian American Studies! This position is renewable for up to two years.  

The Calvin J. Li Fellowship is intended to support a recent PhD with expertise in the issues facing second-generation children/adolescents of immigrants to the United States. A focus of the fellowship program is research on how children of parents from Asian backgrounds navigate family, community, and life in the United States. Successful applicants might focus on the challenges facing second-generation youth, identity formation, racial and ethnic representation, acculturation, transnationalism, family dynamics, or closely related topics. The Li Fellow will teach one class a semester for the Asian American Studies Program related to their research.  In addition, the Li Fellow has the opportunity to present their research to the University community through public lectures and, in particular, will distill research for a lay audience through a community-based lecture that will be coordinated by the Asian American Studies Program in conjunction with local Asian American community organizations and held in a local, off-campus location. The successful applicant is expected to work closely with a core or affiliate faculty member in the Asian American Studies Program and is expected to take an active role in dissemination of research related to the children of immigrants through traditional and new media outlets. The fellow will have opportunities for participating in research, writing and developing their own research questions, for seeking additional training and consultation, and for presenting their research findings at national conferences.

Asian American Studies at the University of Maryland is a program of study that draws upon the experiences of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans to explore critical questions about identity, representation, and power. Through a focus on Asian American communities, students learn about how racial categories are constructed, how groups are represented, and how power shapes social, political, and historical dynamics. The varied experiences of Asian Americans highlight a complex racial positioning that reflects both privilege and marginalization. As a predominantly foreign born group with members that hail from many different places, the experiences of Asian Americans also tell us much about how migration and transnationalism affect identity and belonging across diverse social, political and economic arenas.

The Asian American Studies Program is housed in the Office of Undergraduate Studies and offers 10-15 classes each semester taught by the program’s four core faculty and numerous affiliate and part-time lecturers.  For more information about the Asian American Studies Program visit www.aast.umd.edu.

Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate must have earned a doctorate within two years of the position start date.  The Li Fellowship is open to disciplines in the Social Sciences or Humanities, particularly Psychology, Cultural Studies, Education, Sociology, Demography, and Family Sciences.  Applicants must demonstrate expertise in Asian American Studies and their research must focus on issues related to the children of immigrants. In addition, applicants must demonstrate excellent written communication and interpersonal skills

Preferences:
Ideally, candidates will have a strong interest in making their research accessible to a lay audience and experience teaching undergraduate students.

The Global Asias Initiative at UMBC is now offering the second round of its student research fellowship in Global Asias in the amount of $500 where students will work with faculty and community partners on an independent study in the field for a period of one semester. We’re currently accepting applications for projects taking place in Spring 2025. Applications are due December 16, 2024.

The fellowship supports a research project supervised by a UMBC faculty member working in the field of Global Asias. The project should explore a topic in the field of Global Asias: broadly construed to include Asian American studies, Asian studies, or Asian diaspora studies in global context. The exact parameters (length, format, etc) will be set by your faculty advisor. Depending on your major and your academic and professional plans, your project may consist of a scholarly research project or a creative product with a significant research component. At the end of the year, students will submit the final project to their faculty advisor and may be asked to do a brief presentation on their topic to fellow students and faculty in Global Asias. 

We highly encourage proposals for projects that use methods, ideas, and approaches from more than one discipline. The proposed project should be humanities research. Broadly speaking, the “humanities” means the study of human society and culture. Humanities majors or minors typically include but are not limited to: Africana Studies; American Studies; Anthropology; Art and Art History; Asian and Asian American Studies; English; History; Human Rights; Journalism; Latinx Studies; Media and Communication Studies, Philosophy; Sociology; Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies. 

 *Funding will be distributed to the student as a stipend in two $250 amounts - once in January and once in May upon completion of the project

Welcoming Priya & Mika to Global Asias!


Priya Bhayana joined us in March as the initiative’s Project Management Specialist, and got kicked off right away putting the finishing touches on our opening workshop in April. She brings 10+ years of non-profit and higher education program development and management work in Baltimore to our team.

Mika Thornburg will be joining us this fall as our Postdoctoral Fellow in Global Asias. She is currently finishing her doctoral degree in history from the University of California - Santa Barbara. Mika will be pursuing research, teaching public humanities courses, helping to develop the Global Asias conversation series and programming, curriculum development, and generally visioning the future of the initiative. Thank you to Meredith Power, Asian Studies Program Management Specialist, for your support with the postdoctoral hiring process!


Spring Opening Workshop


We officially launched the Global Asias Initiative on April 5, 2024 with our Spring Opening Workshop! We introduced students, faculty, and staff to the initiative and collaboratively visioned the possibilities of the program.

Launched Course Expansion Grants and Student Fellowships

We launched Course Expansion Grants for faculty looking to incorporate a public humanities or community-engaged component into existing courses serving Asian Studies program, Asian American studies minor that fit within the field of Global Asias. We’ll be offering one grant per semester during academic years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026. We also began offering the Student Research Fellowship in Global Asias to support a student project supervised by a UMBC faculty member working in the field of Global Asias.

The Global Asias Initiative at UMBC is offering Course Expansion Grants once per semester up to $2000 to fund curricular innovations especially around the incorporation of a public humanities or community-engaged component into existing courses that serve the Asian Studies program, the Asian American studies minor and fit within the field of Global Asias. The course expansion grants are intended to support the development of Global Asias courses that centralize diasporic, transnational, and ethnic studies approaches.

She discusses her research on the use of cinema to influence electoral and political decision-making in Tamil Nadu and India at large, and cinema's role in political polarization and promotion of Hindu nationalist ideals. As Dr. Jacob references - India's entertainment film industry has a massive worldwide audience. 

Adopting a Global Asias framing, we can imagine how this reach has implications beyond India, particularly in the political formation of South Asian diasporas and in U.S.-India state relations.
