Dr. Robert Deluty, associate dean emeritus of the Graduate School, has published a new book, "Plainly Aware." In his review, Dr. Ronald Pies writes, "In this, his sixty-first book, Robert Deluty fulfills Betty Smith's admonition (quoted at the beginning of the book) to 'Look at everything always as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.' For Deluty, this means looking at the joys and sorrows of life through a child's eyes, even as the seasoned poet sees intimations of mortality. As with his previous work, this splendid new collection shows Deluty as playfully serious and seriously playful, balancing his trademark puckish humor with his deep insight into the human condition. In so doing, Deluty reveals--in Diana Gabaldon's words--how 'existence is balanced on a perfect point, like the moment of change between the dark and the light.'" And in his appraisal of the book, Dr. George Northrup states, "All poets love words, each in their own way. Robert Deluty is the grandmaster of ceremonies at a never-ending language conference, graciously and enthusiastically introducing his myriad guests, helping them discover the many unexpected ways they belong together, and prompting them to strike up creative, madcap conversation. Dr. Nandadevi Cortes Rodriguez is currently an Assistant Professor at Ithaca College, where she teaches Ornithology and Ecology Evolution for first year students.

Prior to that, she was an international graduate student at UMBC and a postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

Student caregivers often encounter obstacles in balancing their caregiving responsibilities while trying to achieve academic success.

We at Gears invite you to our first-of-a-kind event IDEATHON. How can new or existing problems can be tackled better by using your unique idea?  IDEATHON is all about presenting your unique idea to the jury and fellow graduate students in UMBC.  You can participate either individually or in a group of no more than 3 people.

This event will highlight your creative skills and uniqueness (idea can be social, environmental, IT technology, medical field related, etc. These ideas can be real or hypothetical). You must create a 3 min presentation showcasing your idea, and highlighting what makes it unique. We have around $1000 in prizes to be won. All the participants are eligible for a free UMBC logo Mask**.  Also, the First 10 participants will get a chance to win UMBC merchandise T-shirts. **

Event Details: 

  • The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5 PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 6, 2021, through Friday, July 9, 2021.
  • Students must plan to attend the full sessions, for each of the 4 days. 
  • The daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures and 5 hours of writing per day.
  • The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.
  • There are 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Why should You apply to the Dissertation House?


Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations.  Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them from completing their degrees.

The Dissertation House activities focus on areas where students typically have difficulty: conceptualizing a topic, writing a literature review, transitioning from a proposal to a dissertation, analyzing data, writing the last chapter, and editing.

How to Apply

  1. Create a single word document with the following settings:
    1. font size 11-12 pt
    2. 1 inch margins

  2. Divide it into 2 sections - Part 1 and Part 2

  3. In Part 1, type your header information on one page:
    1.  Name
    2. Address
    3. Telephone numbers (mobile, home, office)
    4. E-mail address
    5. Academic Program
    6. Year in program (1st year, 5th Year, etc)

  4. Type up a brief description (maximum 2 pages) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period.

  5. In Part 2, type up the following:
    1. Summary of the project, including research question(s), data, texts, and methods
    2. Amount completed on the project to date
    3. Any obstacles you have encountered that hinders completion of the dissertation

  6. Email application to promisestaff@gmail.com using the subject line format: "Dissertation House Summer 2021 Application: FirstName LastName"

 
Applications will not be reviewed or accepted outside of the application enrollment period. 

Dates: Tuesday, July 6 - Friday, July 9, 2021

Location: ONLINE

Selection Process: Eighteen (18) participants will be selected for participation in the Dissertation House.
The following applicants will have priority:

  1. Applicants who plan to finish the Ph.D. within the next 6 months
  2. Individuals who are working on dissertations and theses rather than a proposal
  3. Applicants who submit earliest, and
  4. Individuals who appear most able to benefit from the services offered at the Dissertation House.

If your application is accepted, you will receive an acceptance notice via email and additional details about the Dissertation House.

The GSA is seeking applications for senators who will serve throughout the next academic year. Such senators would have the following general responsibilities as they represent either their college or the general interests of all graduate students at UMBC:

1) Attend monthly meetings of the Graduate Senate between August 2021 and May 2022.
2) Work with other senators to host town halls between August 2021 and May 2022 aimed at gathering input and feedback from graduate students
3) Serve on at least one university committee
4) Other tasks as assigned by the Graduate Senate or Executive Council (such as following up on an issue or comment)

Senators who fulfill these responsibilities will be eligible to receive a stipend of $200 per semester.

Note that as the campus remains closed, the GSA Senate will plan to conduct business virtually (this will include meetings, town halls, events, etc). As any changes are announced, the GSA Executive Council will be sure to keep the GSA Senate informed.
