Description

A research opportunity is available in the Office of Translational Sciences/Immediate Office, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

This project located in The Office of Translational Sciences / Immediate Office involves collaborating with CDER staff on projects involving the assessment of FDA’s regulatory science activities and outreach efforts in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The project involves various mechanisms available to FDA for partnering with external organizations to promote regulatory science and innovation in drug development, including Technology Transfer, Critical Path Innovation Meetings, Public Private Partnerships and Consortia Activities. This project will have a significant impact on improving strategies and processes for collaborations between CDER and external groups.

Under the guidance of a mentor the participant will learn the mechanisms available to FDA for partnering with external organizations to promote regulatory science and innovation in drug development, assess partnership needs, and participate in identifying the impact of scientific collaborations on CDER’s research priorities. This training is critical to our public health mission and will prepare the participant for a successful career transition into regulatory science research.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and FDA. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at FDA in the Silver Spring, Maryland, area. Participants do not become employees of FDA, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Completion of a successful background investigation by the Office of Personnel Management is required for an applicant to be on-boarded at FDA.  OPM can complete a background investigation only for individuals, including non-US Citizens, who have resided in the US for a total of three of the past five years.

FDA requires ORISE participants to read and sign their FDA Education and Training Agreement within 30 days of his/her start date, setting forth the conditions and expectations for his/her educational appointment at the agency.  This agreement covers such topics as the following:

  • Non-employee nature of the ORISE appointment;
  • Prohibition on ORISE Fellows performing inherently governmental functions;
  • Obligation of ORISE Fellows to convey all necessary rights to the FDA regarding intellectual property conceived or first reduced to practice during their fellowship;
  • The fact that research materials and laboratory notebooks are the property of the FDA;
  • ORISE fellow’s obligation to protect and not to further disclose or use non-public information.
Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Familiarity with maintaining and creating databases is desired.

The Stem Cell Program at Boston Children’s Hospital invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position. This position will be a joint appointment between Harvard University’s Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology and the Stem Cell Program at Boston Children’s Hospital. Both are affiliated with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute. A secondary appointment will be held with the Department of Pediatrics.

Accomplished scientists with a demonstrated research interest in stem cells and regenerative biology/medicine will be given preference. This could include chromatin or transcriptional regulation, chemical biology, tissue regeneration, organoids, cancer or disease models.

New faculty will benefit from state-of-the-art research facilities, strong institutional and departmental commitment to career development, and a vibrant, collaborative research enterprise that brings together fundamental biology and medical science to create unique scientific and educational opportunities. The appointee will teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate and medical students, as well as postdoctoral research fellows.

Candidates must hold a PhD and/or MD degree. Appointments will be made at the academic rank of assistant professor, in accordance with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. Are you interested in forming a Graduate Student Organization (GSO) this year? If so, please fill out the GSA’s online registration form by October 4, 2019 and this will ensure that your organization will be eligible for GSA funding this year.

Due to GSA’s senate restructure, GSO representatives will no longer be required to attend monthly GSA Senate meetings. GSOs are only required to submit two points of contact who will be added to our GSO email list so we can more easily communicate with you throughout the year. The structure of the group's leadership can be left up the GSO as well.  Please note that while GSOs no longer need to attend our monthly GSA Senate meetings, we welcome any GSO member to attend; you can find the list of Senate meeting dates here.   

After registering, GSOs can also begin applying for event funding by filling out an Allocation Request Form. All Allocation request forms will be reviewed monthly by the Grants Review Panel and you will receive communication from the GSA Community Liaison regarding the status of your request as well as instructions for reimbursement. 

This year, the GSA Senators representing the 3 different colleges (COEIT, CAHSS and CNMS) as well as the Non-Academic GSOs will be hosting town halls aimed at their college or group. Once we have set those dates, we will be in touch so you may spread the word to your peers and departments. 

Once all GSOs are registered, we will also offer training sessions to review event planning and reimbursement procedures, more information on those coming soon.

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) has been in existence for many years. The fellowships are available to students in STEM (social sciences and psychology are included) and STEM education, and come with a 3-year stipend and other benefits.

Each NSF GRFP Fellowship is worth more than $100,000. Our speakers, UMBC alums who have been winners themselves, have helped to produce several winners. You can be one of them!
The session is open to all undergraduate students, and first-year graduate students.

Dear Students, 

We have a few important announcements for Fall '19 Graduate Assistants.

Tuition Remission Update

If you will be a Graduate Assistant in the Fall '19 semester and are expecting tuition remission please note that the Graduate School is currently working diligently to post your tuition remission by the bill date of 8/20. 

However, if you check your account on 8/20 and you do not see tuition remission posted, know that it is due to the high volume of transactions that we are processing. We will ensure that all tuition remission is posted to student accounts no later than 8/24. Note that although your bill due date is 8/20, late fees will not be assessed until 8/25. If you registered for classes in August, your bill due date is 9/20.

Graduate Assistant (Mandatory) Orientation on 8/23 - Please sign-up!

New Fall '19 Graduate Assistants are required to attend the Graduate Assistant Orientation on 8/23 which includes Title IX training.

If, due to extenuating circumstances, you cannot attend the Graduate Assistant Orientation on 8/23, please plan to attend one of the sessions of Title IX training offered on 8/20. If you attend training on 8/20, you will be excused from attending on 8/23.

NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship – Next Application Deadline: November 1, 2019

The NASA Postdoctoral Program offers U.S. and international scientists the opportunity to advance their research while contributing to NASA’s scientific goals. The NPP supports fundamental science; explores the undiscovered; promotes intellectual growth; and encourages scientific connections.

Selected by a competitive peer-review process, NPP Fellows complete one- to three-year Fellowship appointments that advance NASA’s missions in earth science, heliophysics, planetary science, astrophysics, space bioscience, aeronautics and engineering, human exploration and space operations, and astrobiology.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in hand before beginning the fellowship, but may apply while completing the degree requirements. U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, and foreign nationals eligible for J-1 status as a Research Scholar, may apply.

Stipends start at $60,000 per year, with supplements for high cost-of-living areas and for certain academic specialties. Financial assistance is available for relocation as well as subsidized health insurance, and $10,000 per year is provided for professional and programmatic travel.

Applications are accepted three times each year:

● If you complete the pre-assessment and two or more modules, your name will be entered in our $300 campus card deposit drawing.
