Accessibility and Disability Services and Student Disability Services celebrates Women's History Month, calling to mind all women who have contributed to pivotal moments and events in history and contemporary society. Student Conduct and Community Standards has a Building Campus Community two-day, face-to-face restorative practices workshop (our 15th iteration!) coming up over Spring Break. We are purposeful in terms of trying to offer the training during times in the academic calendar that would permit undergraduate students to participate. The workshop is Thursday, March 21 and Friday, March 22 in the Apartment Community Center

There is no charge for UMBC affiliates, but we ask that non-UMBC folks purchase tickets that cover the cost of their meals and training supplies. More information is available here. While information is on myumbc, you register by going to the Google Form linked here.

Since 2015, we have trained over 500 faculty, staff, and students in restorative practices. These techniques are useful to managing conflict and repairing harm in classrooms, workplaces, residence halls, and family systems. You won't regret the investment of two days to participate in this workshop. We hope to see you in a couple weeks! Even if you can't attend, please pass the word to a colleague. There are about 15 seats remaining.

Anyone can participate as long as you’re affiliated with UMBC! Students, professors, faculty, club, doesn’t matter.


Qualification: Just like last time, your submission must consist of 1 appetizer and 1 entree. While last year was exciting, to make it a little more interesting, your team must consist of 2 dishes with one of them being strictly vegetarian. In terms of the grading rubric, your recipe’s creativity, detail, ingredients, flavor and texture, and your use of a Retriever Essentials ingredient will determine if you’re picked! The Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program is a partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and UMBC to help veterans achieve their academic goals. The VITAL program is comprised of VA mental health professionals who can help both student veterans and their universities/colleges by providing and/or assisting with services, resources, and support.

Interns support the Center's programs and initiatives, working collaboratively with other members of the staff. Each intern has a particular area of focus, but all members of the team are involved in developing and producing the Center's work. Interns work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year, with some variation to be determined. Internships will begin in late August 2024 and conclude in May 2025.

The internships available for 2024 - 2025 are:

Evaluation intern (undergraduate and graduate students): Evaluation interns support the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's assessment, evaluation, and research projects; investigate topics related to Center for Democracy and Civic Life programs; and support the Center's contributions to national higher education initiatives.

Special projects intern (undergraduate students only): Special projects interns support the planning and implementation of the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's programs and initiatives. Tasks may include finding and compiling information, preparing instructional materials, ensuring the availability of program supplies, creating and distributing promotional materials, helping with program setup and cleanup, and guiding and checking in guests at program venues.

Political engagement intern (undergraduate and graduate students): Political engagement interns support programs that foster dialogue about current events and issues; connect UMBC students with the legislative process in Annapolis; engage them in politics and pathways to political leadership; and encourage their participation in local, state, and national elections.

All intern positions pay $15.00/hour to start.

All undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA are invited to apply. Preferred but not required: Applicants will have participated in Alternative Spring Break (ASB), STRiVE, ConnectionCorps, and/or other Center for Democracy and Civic Life workshops or programs.

What is Meet and Confer (M&C)?

Meet and Confer (M&C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. M&C Meetings- Spring '24

This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.


The CNMS M&C Meeting is scheduled for March 11th, and we strongly encourage all GAs from Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Statistics to complete the survey. Your input will allow you to voice your concerns and issues to the Graduate Assistant Advisory Committee, who will present them at the M&C meetings for discussion and resolution.
