Be yourself.
Students often try to write based on what they think the professor wants to see (stylistically). While your writing assignment should address the specific requirements of the given assignment, trying to mimic the style/tone of a research paper you read for the assignment will come off as cheap and uninteresting. Additionally, writing as yourself and for yourself will demonstrate a deeper understanding of the assignment and the course knowledge. The information should be there, but the way in which the information is presented should be entirely your own. Try explaining aloud to a friend or peer what you are trying to write, and use that as a template for the tone of your paper.

The Mosaic: Center for Cultural Diversity (Originally named UMBC's Multicultural Center) is dedicated to creating an environment that supports cross-cultural education and collaboration at UMBC. This space was created out of the work of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners that saw the need for a student-centered space for cultural learning and identity development after the disbandment of The Office of Multicultural Affairs. The Mosaic's commitment is to empower all UMBC to be culturally conscious and informed members of our community. Doubling as a lounge and office space, this space is rarely empty. Guests frequently have discussions about their hot topics in pop culture, media, or sharing their personal experiences. A safe and inclusive space for all UMBC community members of all backgrounds, The Mosaic strives to develop innovative programs and initiatives that celebrate cultural diversity, equality, and social justice. This space is open and staffed year-round. The Mosaic is reservable upon request after hours of operations.

Dear UMBC Community,

The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is undergoing construction to fix leaks and install a new roof. On Saturday, October 7, 2023, construction will take place inside the library's atrium to work on the ceiling and the roof above the atrium and the Retriever Learning Center (RLC). To ensure everyone's safety and allow for construction, the building will be closed for use on Saturday, October 7. The card swipe to the atrium and RLC will be deactivated at 5 a.m. on October 7, and will be reactivated at 6:30 p.m. The rest of the library and gallery building will remain closed until regular hours (noon to midnight) resume on Sunday, October 8.

We understand this may cause some inconvenience, but the closure is necessary to complete the construction work. Signage on the RLC and library and gallery doors will serve as reminders for the upcoming work.

Open Source 101: 5:00pm-5:45pm

Interested in using open source projects to contribute to the software engineering community while also bolstering your resume? This workshop will review the basics of open source methodology and provide actionable steps for joining many kinds of open source projects. Google is one of the tech industry's biggest champions of decentralized open source software development, with examples such as Android, Chrome, and TensorFlow (among others).

Google Beyond Software Engineering: 5:45pm-6:30pm

Interested in working at Google but don't have a CS degree (or don't plan on getting one)? Come hear about all of the cool opportunities Google has for engineering majors outside of software engineering + why having a foundation in CS can be valuable in any industry. We'll discuss both full-time and internship roles in fields such as IT, hardware engineering, and others.

Technical Interview Workshop

Are you gearing up for technical interviews this fall? Whether you’re interested in our STEP Internship (for 1st and 2nd years), Software Engineering Internship (for 3rd years) or our full-time SWE roles, you may want to brush up on those interview skills. Join us for mock questions and tips!

Diversity at Google

Diversity, equity, and inclusion will always be priorities at Google as we strive to build technology for everyone. Belonging broadens our understanding of these measures, by providing a universal and human “why,” and an invitation to go one step further. Not only are we committed to building equity where the greatest barriers exist, belonging also asks us to build bridges that connect everyone and envision a future where we all have what we need to thrive.

Please note: UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, students, and visitors. If you would like to request accommodations (e.g., ASL interpreters, captioning, wheelchair access, etc.) for this event, please notify us at least two weeks prior to the event. Requests received after that time cannot be guaranteed, but we will do our best to make arrangements for program access.
