Highlighting Summer HAPP Intern:

“My name is Bryce Mack. I am a Senior at UMBC. I will be graduating this upcoming Fall semester. I transferred to UMBC from Howard Community College with an AA In Public Health and chose to attend UMBC because they offered the administrative side of Public Health. I chose to study Public Health/Health Administration because public health is a field where you get to help people better their lives. It is a field where you can actively see that you are making a difference in the world. At my internship at Retriever Essentials I chose to study the Save-A-Swipe program where students can donate meal swipes to students suffering from food insecurity. The rate of food insecurity at UMBC is higher than any other college in the University System of Maryland. Now there are many different factors as to why this is, but it was shocking for me to see while conducting my research. No student should have to go hungry and the Save-A-Swipe program works to mediate this problem. I researched similar programs at other colleges and universities and worked to find the common threads and the divergent elements between the programs. With this new research available and the outstanding staff at Retriever Essentials the Save-A-Swipe program will become more extensive and reach more students suffering from food insecurity.”

This event will be taking place on Wednesday October 20th, 2021
10/11
The Commons COMM 328

It's been too long since we at PROMISE have had the opportunity to host
an in-person event for graduate students and we miss seeing you!
(You know, in person and not on a tiny screen on Webex!).

We've decided to host an informal gathering at Commons 328 and
hope you will join us.

WE will provide some coffee and donuts to share and invite you to stop to say hi and catch up with us and other graduate students.

We (Dr. Robin Cresiski and Yarazeth Medina) will be available to talk
about the Grad Student and Postdoc Development Office (GSPD),
PROMISE, the calendar of professional development events,
our latest Netflix Binges, and hopefully, create an opportunity
for you to meet fellow grad students in other departments.
We would love to help you develop
a deeper sense of community here on campus.
If you just feel like stopping for free coffee and a donut, you are more
than welcome to do so as well!

Please click on "Going" on the event page here so we can be sure
to have enough coffee and donuts for all who plan to attend.
Please remember: Facemasks are required inside the building.

If you need any special accommodations or have questions,
please contact Yarazeth Medina at yarazeth@umbc.edu

During this time of continued uncertainty and change we are faced with many stressors that impact the way we live & work affect our ability to take care of ourselves and others.  We need tools, frameworks, resources and support from our community to steady our individual and collective boats so that we may bring the best version of ourselves to our life and our work in supporting students.

Join us for a series of Caring For Yourself & Supporting Students Connections Group sessions. This is a time to share, support, and learn from each other. Each session will explore a shared resource, tool, or practice to explore in advance and/or during our session, encourage open discussion space to engage, learn, and support each other, and formulate self-care and/or other-care strategies to help support resilience & well-being for ourselves and the students we serve.

See October's article and we hope to see you there! Conversations will be facilitated by  Bruce Herman, Director of UMBC Retriever Integrated Health, and Jill Wardell, Director of UMBC's Workplace Learning, OD & Wellness department. We welcome you to join us for these exploratory, productive, and hopefully meaningful conversations!

Participants will receive a link with the credentials for the session 24 hours beforehand.
