Adebola and I pitched the Nigeria graduate student association to be recognized as Graduate Student Organization, which was approved by all the Senators present. Usually, most of the senators must vote yes to be recognized as a GSO (11 of 16 senators at minimum).
The benefit of this recognition are;

(1) It will allow us to book campus spaces for our events.
(2) Funding support by Graduate Student Association.
(3) Ability to collaborate with other GSOs.

Dear Graduate Assistants,

The tax filing season is here and we would like to help you navigate your way through the process.

Tax Deductions:
  • As a GA, your stipends are taxable income. Graduate Assistants (GA) will receive a 1099 and W-4 form at the beginning of each calendar year to use when filing taxes.

  • If you did not get the 1099 form by February 15, call the IRS for help at 1-800-829-1040.

  • Every paycheck reflects the amount deducted for state and federal taxes, however, the GA stipends are FICA exempt. 
  • You can use the net pay calculator for estimating taxes and net pay.
Tax Treaty for International GAs:
  • If you are a nonresident alien individual who qualifies as a resident of a treaty country, you might be eligible for a tax exemption of certain amount depending upon your country of citizenship. Tax exempt students need to fill out form 8233 and submit it to their HR to get enrolled for tax exemption.
Tax Filing for International GAs:
  • As an international student, if you received US income during 2022, you are legally required to file a tax return by April 18, 2023. 
  • Even if you did not work or receive income in the US, you are still obliged to file a Form 8843 with the IRS.
  • UMBC has arranged access to a tax filing software, Sprintax, for you. 
  • Sprintax will guide you through the tax preparation process, arrange the necessary documents, and check if you are due a tax refund. 
  • You should have received a discount code from ISSS in your mailbox to use at checkout time on Sprintax.
