The Department of American Studies (AMST) at UMBC is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program designed to advance the study of American cultures through research, teaching and service to the campus and community. The Department has four full-time faculty, three part-time instructors and a single Program Management Specialist in charge of the office and program management and administration. We also manage the college-wide Public Humanities minor in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS). Responsibilities

The Program Management Specialist will serve as initial contact for the Department of American Studies for constituents in person and by email or phone. The position includes managing the college-wide Public Humanities minor and associated public programming. Responsibilities include performing office duties for the department. Specific duties include: budget and bookkeeping responsibilities; course scheduling and catalog maintenance; tracking enrollment and other department data; processing faculty travel requests; coordinating meetings and logistical details for the department; working with various campus offices for general department functions and organization; providing information to visitors to the department; submitting and monitoring work control requests for facilities issues; directing inquirers as appropriate; coordinating, monitoring and assisting as needed with day-to-day operations of the department and assisting with routine office duties; screening and distributing departmental mail; and performing other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Two years experience in administrative staff work
  • Proficiency with word processing, email, calendar management and financial transactions
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Accurate and timely communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and data management skills
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion

Note:  Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:

Welcome to Spring 2022 at UMBC! Whether you are a new or returning Retriever, we are excited to have you and look forward to connecting. As we gear up for another semester, OCSS wants to make sure we continue to keep our UMBC community as safe as possible from the Omicron variant of COVID-19. We have been extremely successful in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 because of all of you and that is not lost on us. You make the difference and we appreciate you for that. To ensure that we remain on the right path, this letter is intended to review UMBC’s COVID-19 response and the safety measures that will continue to keep our community safe.  


  • KN95 masks are required. All community members are currently required to wear a KN95 or equivalent mask indoors in public spaces at UMBC. This includes in classrooms, on transportation, and inside dining facilities when not actively eating. KN95 equivalent masks include: an N95, KN95, or KF94 mask, FFP2-3, or a double surgical mask. Free KN95 masks are available during business hours at the UMBC Police Station, Campus Card and Dining Services, the Retriever Activities Center, The Commons Information Center, and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Circulation Desk.

  • Entry testing is required for Spring 2022. All community members are required to take an on-campus PCR test on the first day they return to campus. If possible, we also recommend that you take an at home rapid test the day before you return to campus in addition to the required PCR. Here is some additional information on how to test.

  • Vaccinations are required. The University System of Maryland and UMBC are requiring all students, faculty and staff to remain up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations. This includes an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine—a “booster shot”—when you are eligible. Make sure to report your vaccines or request an exemption as soon as possible. 

  • Maintain physical distance and limit gatherings. Evaluate all of your group activities. Other than going to class, we strongly encourage moving group meetings and study groups online. Many of OCSS’ activities will be online. When conditions permit, we will also offer some safe in-person options for events.

What have you lost due to COVID? What are you grieving? Who can you share your grief with?

The Pandemic Grief Processing Group aims to make space for honoring and acknowledging the losses students, staff, and faculty within the UMBC community have experienced in these last 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This discussion-based program will explore the different kinds of grief and loss people may be experiencing individually and as a society, giving language and space for each of the participants to express their personal stories.

Our intention for this group is to create a space for processing, connection, healing, and collective growth. We will collaborate in the creation of a community grief ritual together even as we are still moving through our grief in different ways.

PGPG will be run as a 3-week program. The group will meet for a 90-minute session, once a week, for three consecutive weeks. The first two sessions will be online on Fridays, February 18th and 25th, 2:00-3:30 and then our hope is that the group will conclude with a final in-person session on Friday, March 4th, 2:00-3:30 in the Women’s Center. To indicate your comfort with meeting in person, please see the commitment form below.

Note: To ensure that we have time for everyone to share their stories, we will be limiting the number of participants to 12.
This group is open to all students and faculty/staff of the UMBC community.


*Positionality statement: The facilitators of this group are senior social work students in their final practicum. We are not professional grief experts but we have experience in facilitating supportive groups as well as individualized counseling with peers. We hope to hold space for everyone and that, together, as a community, we can learn from and support each other.

Graduate Students,

The UMBC Special Collections department is seeking a graduate student intern for Spring 2022 to assist with the NEH Preservation Assistance grant funded project “Rehousing the Lewis Hine Collection at UMBC Special Collections.” The student intern will be trained to complete physical handling and rehousing of gelatin silver photographic prints from the Lewis Hine Collection, copy stand photography of print versos, metadata entry, and promotion of the project on social media and through blog posts. We are seeking a graduate student enrolled in an MLIS program or master’s program in a relevant field (eg: Public History, Art History, Art Conservation, Museum Studies) with a particular interest in preservation and/ or photography. Prior experience handling photographs or working in a Library Special Collections or a Museum is preferred. The internship will be 120 hours (about 7 hours per week) carried out in person at UMBC Special Collections between February and June 2022, and comes with a stipend of $2,000. Dear UMBC Community Members, 


On behalf of the University Steering Committee, we are writing to ask you to save Thursday, April 7 on your calendar for a Community Mental Health Action day. The USC will be working with partners across campus to host events both in person and online over the course of the day to  promote mental health and community well-being. For now, we are writing to ask three things:

  1. Please help make this day happen! If you have an idea for a workshop, class, conversation, or event that you would like to take the lead on, please email Susan McDonough at mcdonoug@umbc.edu. Alternatively, if you’re already programming an event that we can help advertise, let us know.

  2. Please consider building this day into your syllabi and plans for the work day, perhaps with an assignment or readings that reflect the theme through the lens of your field, or perhaps with a study day to allow folks to participate throughout the day. 

  3. Join us on Apr 7, 2022!

he Molecular Targets Program (MTP) of the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Research (NCI’s CCR) has postdoctoral positions available in its Protein Chemistry and Molecular Biology Section (PCMBS). The PCMBS uses its expertise in protein chemistry, biophysics, enzymology, molecular biology and screening to adapt CCR basic science laboratory findings into high throughput, cell-free screens for the interrogation of pure compound and pre-fractionated natural product libraries. In addition, we use these same skills to discover and characterize novel bioactive proteins from natural product extracts that increase our knowledge of protein structure and function, address diseases and molecular targets of interest, and potentially lead to clinical development.

 

The position is for a researcher with published expertise in enzyme kinetics and in-vitro inhibitor/activator mechanism of action studies to develop and implement high-throughput assays for the discovery of biologically active synthetic and natural product-derived compounds. Applicants should highlight their experience in relevant methods of in-vitro enzymology in their introductory email. Previous experience in high throughput screening or natural products discovery is not required but will be prioritized in candidate evaluation.

 

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry, cell/molecular biology, pharmacognosy or a related discipline from an accredited research institution within the last three years. The fellowship duration is for a maximum of 5 years based on performance and yearly evaluations. The fellowship is not restricted to U.S. citizens. The fellowship stipend starts at a flat rare per annum and is determined based on qualifications and years of relevant experience. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV with bibliography, and three letters of reference to MTP_PostDoc@nih.gov.
