Thursday, October 7, 2021 · 5 PM - 7 PM Dinner with Friends will feature engaging, facilitated small-group conversations over dinner that will connect you with other members of the UMBC community. You will spend the evening sharing stories, learning about each other's experiences with important issues affecting UMBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and discussing how we can move forward together. 

An RSVP is required as spots in these popular virtual conversations are limited. Choose to join a facilitated small-group conversation about one of the following discussion topics:

• Building community during and after the pandemic

• Supporting mental health in challenging times

• Promoting civic agency and engagement between elections

• Fostering equity and inclusion

Dinner with Friends is organized by the Center for Democracy and Civic Life in collaboration with the Student Government Association and the Graduate Student Association.

The Sustainable Age is a student journal founded by students of the North Texas Regional Center of Expertise Network. The journal is seeking volunteer student writers to submit original articles centered on the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

This project is led by students for students. It is focused on educating and raising awareness of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This student-led journal provides an environment for students from different universities across the world to develop academic research concerning different areas like Social Justice, Human Health and Well-being, Philosophy, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, Climate Action, and Business. 

Writers can learn introductory level scholarly and peer-reviewed writing methods, supported by an editorial team of volunteer students, faculty, and staff. Every article published in the online journal is related to at least one SDG, is reviewed by at least one person of the editorial review team, and includes at least one cited reference using MLA format. Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.

The Leadershops series consists of workshops that focus on various student centered leadership-related topics facilitated by Campus Life staff and student leaders. This program aims to contribute to the leadership development and ongoing learning of UMBC undergraduate students.

The LeadHERship Problem - Tuesday, September 21st at 12:00pm

This session is about taking a deeper look into the relationship between womxn and leadership. Attendees will learn about how our socialization affects our views regarding our own identity and our capacity to lead. This session will be done online.

The Author of Your Leadership Story - Wednesday, October 20th at 12:00pm

The Author of Your Leadership Story is a leadership workshop that focuses on self-authorship; defining and creating you own individual sense of self, and making yourself as you go on your college journey. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.

Going Farther Together - Thursday, November 18th at 12:00pm

Attendees will learn about the leadership process through team-building and capitalizing on difference. This session will be done in-person at The Commons.
