<Title>Fines happen. What&#8217;s the next step?</Title>

    <div class="html-content">We’ve all been there - sometimes the date slips your mind, and next thing you know you’ve got overdue library books!  So what happens next?<br><br>First off: don’t panic!  The fine for late books or DVDs is only $0.50 per day!  Other fines, like for laptops and equipment, are a little higher.  You can check the full list of fine amounts here: <a href="http://library.umbc.edu/circulation.php#fees" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://library.umbc.edu/circulation.php#fees</a>  <br><br>If you can’t get to the library immediately, try <a href="http://catalog.umd.edu/patron=go" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">renewing the item</a>.  You’ll still have the original fines, but you’ll stop accruing more.  (Note: not all items can be renewed.  For example, a recalled book cannot be renewed this way.  But it’s worth a try!)<br><br>When you’re ready to pay your fine, head to the Check Out Desk. Payment options are Campus Cash, credit card, or check. (Note: you can only pay your bill at the library for the first 30 days.  After that, the Student Business Office takes over.)<br><br>Do you have a question about your fine?  You can contact the Circulation Department for answers at 410-455-2354.     <div class="html-content">Food is allowed in AOK Library and the RLC.  Drinks are too, but in a covered container please!  We do ask that you avoid pricey equipment like photocopiers, printers, computers, microform readers, the Digital Media Lab, and Special Collections.<br><br>Spills sometimes happen - please clean up as best you can and alert library staff so they can check books and furniture for damage. Paper towels are available in the bathroom if you need them.<br><br>And when you’re finished, toss your trash in a bin!  There are several on each floor.  Happy studying!<br><br>

    <div><span>The Library Services Specialist will provide reference services to the UMBC community and support for library instruction and outreach.</span></div>

    <div><span><strong>Responsibilities:</strong></span></div>
    <div><span><div>The successful candidate will join a team of six faculty librarians and one support staff to provide research assistance to a diverse community of UMBC students, faculty, staff and community members. In addition to working on a library service desk providing research support, this position supports the Library’s instruction, orientation, and outreach efforts, particularly to the campus First Year Experience programs. This includes supporting and facilitating general orientations and instruction to first year students, assisting with library workshops, and initiating, planning, and conducting a variety of programs and activities to promote use of the library and its services.</div>

    <div><strong>Required Minimum Qualifications:</strong></div>
    <div>
    <p>Requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year of experience directly related to the primary duties of the position.</p>
    <p>Note: additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.</p>
    <p><span><strong>Preferred Experience:</strong><br></span><span>-Strong interest in outreach and support of university students<br></span><span>-Interest and/or experience working with diverse population
    of students<br></span><span>-Strong interest and/or experience in teaching or providing
    instruction</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>Required Knowledge and Abilities:<br></strong></span><span>-Ability to learn and apply contemporary library terminology
    and functions<br></span><span>-Knowledge of basic principles of quality customer service
    and teamwork<br></span><span>-Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications

<Title>AOK Library closing early Friday, August 11</Title>

    <div>Facilities Management has engaged an electrical contractor to 
    repair the transformer that feeds the AOK Library &amp; Gallery 
    building.  To undertake the repair, all power to the building will be 
    shut off.</div>
    <div>
    <br>Because the power is going off at <span><span>5:00 pm</span></span> on Friday, August  11th, we are closing the library at <span><span>4:00 pm</span></span>.  All staff and patrons should be out of the building by <span><span>4:00 pm</span></span> on Friday the 11th.<br><br>
    </div>
    <div>The RLC will also close at 4:00 pm due to lack of power.  We anticipate that the RLC will be available again at <span><span>8am</span></span> <span><span>on Saturday the 12th.</span></span>

    <strong>Job no:</strong> 492361<br><strong>Work type:</strong> Staff Full-time<br><strong>Location:</strong> UMBC Campus<br><strong>Department:</strong> Library<br><br><br><strong>Responsibilities:</strong>     <br>The incumbent will support the mission of the Circulation Department by staffing the department on Saturdays and the early shift on weekdays.  Using various automated systems, the incumbent will process library materials and requests for users in a quick, efficient, and courteous manner and provide support to library patrons needing basic research help or assistance with library technology and equipment.  Specific duties include: assisting with departmental functions such as faculty reserves, patron registration and billing, and building security; performing stacks maintenance using appropriate classification system to shelve, shift, search and shelf read the collection; monitoring the exit control theft prevention system; applying prescribed measures to prevent theft of library materials; and perform other duties as assigned.  <br><br>Hours for this position are: Saturday 10 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hours are subject to change to reflect changes in library hours and staffing needs.<br><br><strong>Required Minimum Qualifications:</strong>     <br><em>Education Experience:</em>   Requires a High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of library or related clerical or public service experience.  <br>Must have: highly effective communication and interpersonal skills; the ability to provide guidance and instructions to student assistants and to organize work to meet conflicting demands while maintaining careful attention to detail; and demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively on a team.  Must be able to exercise initiative in applying rules, procedures and instructions.  Must be proficient in using library technology, software and databases.<br> <br><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong> <br>Experience in a customer service environment serving a diverse population, with preference given to experience in a library’s circulation or stacks department strongly desired.<br><br><strong>Closing Date:</strong>     June 30, 2017<br><strong>Salary:</strong> Pay Range 7 (starting at $31,867) based on a University System of Maryland Pay Program.<br><strong>Hours:</strong> Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday-Friday - 7:30am - 4:00pm<br><strong>FSLA Status:</strong> Nonexempt<br><br><br>UMBC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
