UMBC Special Collections: The National Child Labor Committee Lantern Slides


A new digital collection, National Child Labor Committee lantern slides, brings online the images that were used by the NCLC in slide shows that they disseminated to bring awareness to the plight of child laborers.  This collection, composed of over 240 glass lantern slides, are part of UMBC's Special Collections and complement the world renown Lewis Hine collection, which is also made available online.

The International Labour Organisation defines child labor as “any work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development”. In the United States, children have been forced to work in mines and industrial factories, where their health and safety were jeopardized. While it may seem unthinkable to us now, the expanding economy of the 19th and 20th centuries demanded cheap labor. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that things began to change. 


The National Child Labor Committee (NCLC) was established in 1904 with the intent to promote the well-being of children and young adults in the workforce. The NCLC opposed the employment of underage workers in dangerous jobs with unhealthy conditions, particularly in mines and factories or completing manual labor, which often led to health concerns such as tuberculosis and broken bones. Children became unhealthy or poor adults, because the cycle of work and sleep left little or no time for education or play. 



In order to bring their concerns to the public’s attention, the NCLC made extensive use of photography. They hired photographers to document child labor, including the working conditions and the children themselves. Exhibitions of these photographs circulated around the United States, dragging the seedy underworld of child labor into the spotlight.


One of the photographers hired by the NCLC was Lewis Hine, a self-styled social photographer who traveled around the country documenting working children.  He used his craft to expose detrimental social conditions and to spur change. These photographs, and those of other NCLC photographers, also brought about new ideas concerning childhood, including the belief that it is something to be cherished and that play should be encouraged. A collection of NCLC photographs printed on glass lantern slides, can be viewed at UMBC’s Special Collections, including many by Lewis Hine.


With the aid of these photographs, the NCLC was able to sway public opinion on child labor. Children under the age of sixteen were prohibited from working dangerous jobs, and children under fourteen we prohibited from working at all. Work permits providing proof of age became mandatory. By the 1930s, child labor finally began to disappear altogether with the invention of machines that could replace small hands in the workplace.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), an Honors University in Baltimore, Maryland, invites applications for a Catalog Librarian.  The successful candidate will be responsible, under the direction of the Head of Technical Services & Library IT Services, for complex copy and original cataloging and metadata provision for library materials including Special Collections materials and serials.

UMBC serves more than 10,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students.  Located just outside Baltimore and 45 minutes from Washington, DC, the campus is growing rapidly under dynamic leadership. Responsibilities:  Supports the mission of the department by providing access to materials through the Library’s online catalog by performing complex copy and original cataloging and metadata provision for library materials including Special Collections materials; catalogs serials and is responsible for database maintenance for serials titles in Aleph.  Along with other librarians, serves as a liaison between other departments within the Library and Technical Services.  Along with other librarians in Technical Services provides leadership for coordinating local cataloging practices with consortial and national standards.  As needed, this position collaborates in developing and documenting new procedures and updating existing guidelines and procedures.  This position may supervise and train staff and student assistants and work on special projects.  Reports to the Head of Technical Services & Library IT Services.

Requirements:  
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or program.

Knowledge of RDA, AACR2r, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC21 formats, and Dublin Core; Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging print materials and specifically special collections materials; Knowledge of integrated library systems, preferably ExLibris; Experience with OCLC’S Connexion; Knowledge of ContentDM; Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment; Demonstrated ability to develop and document procedures.

Salary and Benefits:  Position is a full-time 12-month library faculty appointment at anticipated rank of Librarian I. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Minimum salary: $46,000, comprehensive benefits.  The successful candidate will be expected to meet library and university requirements for reappointment, promotion, and permanent status.

Purpose:Provide support for Reference Department by assisting with web-based tutorial development activities, compiling data, and producing reports.

Reports to: Sarah New, Web Services Librarian

Duties:The Reference Student - Web Assistant will assist the Web Services Librarian by:

Skills required:The assistant should have technical competence with computers and databases, and experience with media creation and/or screen capture creation software, such as Adobe Illustrator, TechSmith Camtasia or Adobe Captivate.

Preference will be given to applicants who have experience recording audio using software such as Audacity; or who have graphic design and/or animation experience.  Applicants will be asked to share a portfolio of their work.

The assistant should be motivated, able to work in a team-based collaborative environment or independently, and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.  The assistant must also display demonstrated professionalism, good judgment skills, excellent public service orientation, and exceptional interpersonal skills.

Schedule:Up to 10 hours per week during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters; work hours are somewhat flexible.

Pay Scale:$10.25 per hour

Special Collections has a great photo collection you have to see for yourself. With over 400 panoramic Cirkut negatives ranging in content from Fort Meade and industrial sights around Baltimore to group portraits of Boumi Temple members and Red Cross nurses, the Hughes Company Cirkut Negatives collection has something for everyone to enjoy. The photographs were taken using a Cirkut camera, patented in 1904 by William J. Johnston and used to capture landscapes and group portraits. Cirkut cameras revolved on an axis and exposed sections of a film roll at the same time as the camera rotated. The negatives range in length from 20 inches to 100 inches, and can be exceptionally detailed. The assorted collection spans 15 boxes and features industrial plants, military units, city skylines, company picnics, panoramic views, schools, churches, city and town life in Maryland between 1916 to the mid-1940s.



Images in the collection depict a variety of locations from factory construction sites to group portraits. Many of the negatives capture the whimsical elements of daily life. Can you spot the pigs in the negative of the Liberty Yeast Co. Plant above? Or the jolly man sitting a few people over from the man who looks incredibly angry in the negative below?



Other topics include baseball games, several Maryland schools, and fleets of ice cream trucks with slogans such as “on your way take home a brick.” While the slogan seems bizarre to us, during this period ice cream was sold in half gallon rectangular tubs therefore they became known as bricks of ice cream.
