Two big award winners at the AOK Library & Gallery!
The Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery proudly announces campus awards for two of our talented staff this semester!
Lindsey Loeper, Librarian III and Reference & Instruction Archivist in our Special Collections division, received the UMBC Provost's Library Faculty Award. This award, founded in 2019, is given every two years to a member of the library faculty who exemplifies excellence in librarianship, research and publication, and service to the UMBC community and information professions. Ms. Loeper is a UMBC graduate (BA, American Studies, 2004) and joined Special Collections in 2007. Her nomination singled out Ms. Loeper's "effective leadership skills, extensive service contributions, and impressive record of scholarship and creativity," as well as her "outstanding and innovative work in teaching, and collaborative and collegial working manner."
Kathy Chetelat, Library Services Supervisor for Interlibrary Loan, received the 2020-2021 Karen L. Wensch Endowment Award for Outstanding Exempt Staff. Among other criteria, the award recognizes a staff member who displays "extraordinary dedication to the fulfillment of the campus goals and mission." Ms. Chetelat joined the Library & Gallery in 2006, and has been a supervisor in Interlibrary Loan since 2018. Her nomination called attention to skill as a customer-serviced focused manager who is regularly praised by Interlibrary Loan users as "unfailingly professional, friendly, helpful, and thorough." She was honored at the Presidential Faculty & Staff Awards ceremony on April 7, 2021.

Survey for Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty:
Openness, Equity, and Diversity in Promotion & Tenure
In conjunction with partners from four other Maryland higher education institutions, the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery is working on a grant-funded project entitled 'A Roadmap to the Future of Promotion and Tenure' that explores how openness, equity, diversity, and inclusion might be more strongly recognized and rewarded in promotion and tenure practices. As part of those efforts, we are conducting a survey of tenured and tenure-track faculty at Maryland academic institutions to learn about current policies and practices, faculty values, and opinions about how policies and practices align with those values. The survey has been reviewed by the Office of Research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and determined to be non-human subjects research.
We invite UMBC Tenure-Track and Tenured Faculty to take the survey.

This project is funded by the Association of College & Research Libraries and led by the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at UMBC with four partner libraries at other Maryland academic institutions: Johns Hopkins, Towson University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland, College Park. 55 People Attend 2nd Annual TechFest
More registrations and an increase in workshops
On April 10, DoIT hosted its 2nd annual TechFest, a campus event that brings together faculty, staff, and students to share technology tools through workshops. This year’s event had a bigger presence than ever before with a 50% increase in registration and a 10% increase in attendees.
TechFest 2017 featured 15 speakers sharing their various technology tools aiming to both support and improve the efficiency of day-to-day activities. Vendors like Lenovo and student organizations like the UMBC Game Developers Club were also a part of this year’s event. The event had a ‘freebie’ table with various items for attendees to take, and over $400 in prizes were raffled off.

New to TechFest 2017 was an app that allowed attendees to build their own schedule of sessions they were interested in attending. The app also featured presenter bios and a QR code scanner allowing users to quickly scan codes to easily leave feedback on the sessions they attended.

A variety of topics were presented by faculty, staff, and students. Ashley Waters, Associate Director for UMBC - Shady Grove Campus, presented how she uses her favorite Google extensions. DeVaughn Jones, a junior Financial Economics major, presented Social Media: Attention vs. Action where he went into depth on how to utilize social media sites like Facebook to effectively market your group at UMBC.

Dr. Ian Anson, assistant professor for Political Science, shared his research findings on engaging student feedback. Rather than giving handwritten feedback, Anson found that by using screen capture technology he could provide more effective student feedback that also engages more with students. TechFest 2017 was a big success and engaged the UMBC community. Attendees found the workshops interesting and helpful. DoIT is taking note of all the feedback from TechFest and is looking to make the next TechFest even better.

New Box Experience Now Available For UMBC Users
Box now has sidebar navigation, improved search, and more
Box, an online file sharing system that allows you to access your files from multiple devices and
collaborate with others, recently released an update to its web interface. Some of the new changes include a brand new sidebar for navigation, improved search, an improved tile view for files, along with a few other minor changes.
New Sidebar
A new, persistent sidebar creates easier access to all your files. Now, the sidebar is always with you wherever you navigate to on Box so things like your ‘Favorites’ are just a click away. You can also now change your landing page to ‘Favorites’ rather than All Files allowing for greater customization as to which files appear when you first open Box. You can change your landing page by going into your account settings. Additionally, ‘Notifications’ have been renamed to ‘Messages’.

New Improved Search
Previously advanced search options were only accessible after completing a simple keyword search. Now, search results can include content filters to narrow down results and can search by metadata.

Other Changes
The new Box experience has a lot of smaller changes as well. Single clicking an item selects it, while double clicking an item or clicking the name opens it. You can now switch between list view or an enhanced thumbnail view for rich previews easier too. Box has also added several new keyboard shortcuts:
Use Ctrl + click to multi select items
Ctrl + C shortcut to copy selected items
Ctrl + X shortcut to cut selected items
Ctrl + V shortcut to paste selected items
3D and 360º images, as well as HD and 360º video can now be viewed in Box without the need of downloading the file. Options to “Invite Collaborators” and “Get [a] Shared Link” are now consolidated under the “Share this Folder” button.
If you want to revert back to the old Box experience, you can do so by clicking on the question icon at the top of the page. At a later date, the new Box experience will be enabled for all users and you will be unable to revert back to the old interface.

Computer Replacement Initiative Deadline is March 29
Faculty & staff can fill out the DoIT web form
The Computer Replacement Initiative (CRI) is a UMBC campus-wide initiative designed to replace faculty and staff laptops and desktops. For the 2017-2018 academic year, within Academic Affairs, the subsidy for a laptop is $1,000 and the subsidy for a desktop is $600. You can
fill out the DoIT webform here.
Ordering of the new machines will occur in early June with installations planned for completion by early August. DoIT has an FAQ on the recommended configurations for desktops and laptops
available here.
Timeline for this year’s CRI:
* March 29, 2017: Deadline for submitting the CRI application via the DoIT web form
* April 10, 2017: Notification to chairs/directors of award recommendations from the committee
* April 14, 2017: Feedback from chairs/directors on the award recommendations
* April 19, 2017: Review by the deans of the awards list
* April 21, 2017: Awards are announced
* May 12, 2017: Deadline for awardees to make their computer options selection
* Early June: Computer order will be placed

In 2016, DoIT hosted a brand new type of event known as TechFest, designed to bring UMBC students, faculty, and staff together to share different ways technology can both support and improve the efficiency of day to day activities.
The event planning and implementation was spearheaded by Collin Sullivan, a DoIT student employee. It was a major success, and now, on April 10, at the University Center, TechFest 2017 will feature more presenters, more vendors, and a brand new web app that attendees will be able to download, and giveaways.
“...we can get bogged down in the little work too often, and these types of applications can help us get to the deep work more quickly.”
TechFest 2017 will feature more than 10 faculty, student, and staff presenters. Ashley Waters, Associate Director for UMBC - Shady Grove Campus, will present her favorite Google extensions that enable her to be more productive. “I have found that we can get bogged down in the little work too often and these types of applications can help us get to the deep work more quickly,” said Waters.
Waters wants to share her use of extensions like Google Keep, RescueTime, Boomerang, and more with the goal to share the news with others so they can find what works best for them. “If anyone can put one of these extensions to work and it helps them feel more in control of their demanding duties, my obsession with productivity hacks has been worth it!” said Waters.
Tara Carpenter, Senior Lecturer for Chemistry and Biochemistry, will present her use of canned responses and Google Forms, which streamlines her inbox. Carpenter teaches a very large intro course and spends a lot of time answering emails from students.
“I want to make others aware of how this tool can be used effectively to manage response to student emails,”
Carpenter saw that her emails could be broadly categorized and that she was typing the same responses over and over. By using canned responses, it has led to less time being spent on email for her.
“I want to make others aware of how this tool can be used effectively to manage response to student emails,” said Carpenter. “I'm also going to present the use of Google Forms as a way to collect information from students without adding more email to your inbox.”
Sarah Lilly, senior in Information Systems and SGA Senate Speaker, is excited to attend TechFest and will be hosting a session on Google Calendar. Lilly wants participants get a firm grasp on the tool, and be able to check in with them a few weeks after TechFest and schedule a meeting with them through Google Calendar.
“... I want more people to lean into and work smarter, not harder.”
As a full time student, full time worker, and involvement in student government, Lilly relies on Google Calendar to keep herself organized. “It's the only way I am able to keep my head straight and I want more people to lean into the tool and work smarter, not harder!” said Lilly.
Coming to TechFest 2017 are new vendors. You can expect to see representatives from Microsoft, IEEE, Lenovo, and even some student organizations like the Game Developers’ Club. In addition, a new mobile app that will allow participants to create their own schedule, learn who else is attending, and connect with presenters of sessions. More information about the mobile app will be released closer to TechFest.
Giveaways are returning to this year’s TechFest. To enter to win a giveaway, participants must complete feedback forms at the end of their sessions to get a raffle ticket. Participants can then use their raffle tickets to enter to win whichever prize they want.

Last chance to order books through ILL!
Still working on your research? Please plan ahead for the Library's winter hours!
The Interlibrary Loan Department:
- will be closing at 4:30 pm December 22, 2016 and will reopen Tuesday, January 3, 2017
- will not be able to process and send ILL requests for UMBC patrons from December 22 to January 3 as most of the libraries we borrow from will be closed as well
- If you request a book after December 11 you may not receive it until sometime in January
- plan accordingly (on average it takes about two weeks to get a book through ILL)
- will continue to accept your requests and send them out when we return
- wishes you a happy holiday and new year!
If you will be gone during the January winter break please do not submit ILL book requests until a week or so before you return.

DoIT and VART Partner on Lynda.com License
Online tutorials to help free up faculty prep and class time
To help free up faculty time currently given to in-class software training or even home grown and self-curated online video demos, DoIT and Visual Arts (VART) have partnered to share a one-year, limited license to
Lynda.com, a leading provider of approximately 130,000 tutorials on the latest commercial software and effective business processes. The license is available now, and will allow all VART students, faculty and staff to
use their UMBC login to access Lynda.com during the academic year.
Note: Anyone can try Lynda.com free for 7 days and it is free to patrons of
Anne Arundel and
Howard County Libraries. If you are taking a visual arts class, you will also have access to Lynda.com.
Typically when it comes to teaching how to use software, faculty often create their own tutorials by using screen shots and assembling their own custom guides or they curate a variety of existing online videos and demos from YouTube and other sources. However, this creates a time-consuming production process that can compete with faculty course design or goals for student learning. With Lynda.com, the content itself is constantly updated to be current which helps provide the latest and greatest tutorials.

Dr. Preminda Jacob, Chair and Associate Professor of Art History and Museum Studies in the Department of Visual Arts, was one of the main people involved with bringing Lynda.com to VART.
Dr. Preminda Jacob, Associate Professor and Chair for the Visual Arts Department, believes that both students and faculty will benefit immensely from the site. Jacob said, “...students will be the most avid users of Lynda.com because it will function much like a comprehensive textbook throughout their four years in training at UMBC.”
Faculty will be able to conduct part of the preparation for software programs in the classroom, but get students to learn the remaining sections in their own time. “This allows faculty to devote a larger percentage of class time to discussing the conceptual fundamentals of the course work instead of teaching students the mechanics of the software.” said Jacob.

Faculty are already excited with the prospects of online tutorials being widely available to everyone. Cathy Cooke, professor of Cinematic Arts, said “I also use Lynda.com to teach myself the ever-evolving technology changes that are happening rapidly, by the minute!”
Dan Bailey, professor of Animation, said “Lynda.com is good for tutorials, but it is also great for just "help"...a student can go there with a specific problem, use the search function, and usually get very good insights.”
Gary Rozanc, professor of Graphic Design, worked with Jacob on the initiative to bring the site to VART. Rozanc emphasizes how great the site will be for faculty to incorporate it into their research. “Print designers looking to learn more about interactive design can take courses on HTML/CSS or web developers can augment their toolbox with tutorials on programming for iOS and Android.” said Rozanc.

Jacob estimates that her department will be able to leverage Lynda.com to teach students approximately 60 different art and media related software programs. These include but are not limited to tutorials on Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and Photoshop. Apart from its ease of use, what distinguishes Lynda.com different from other sites is the consistent quality of its instructions and training design.
Although the Lynda.com license is only available to VART for next year, DoIT hopes to use the experience to gauge demand for a possible site license in the future.
“Unfortunately, we could not offer this to the whole campus this year, but we’re excited by VART’s willingness to partner on the Lynda.com license and use it to essentially ‘flip’ their classes,” says John Fritz, Assistant VP of Instructional Technology. “During the year, we will definitely be working with VART to identify and share their lessons learned using Lynda.com to support student learning.”

Rozanc recalled how one self motivated student used Lynda.com to position himself to be a valuable resource for a future employer. “I had a student completely teach himself front and back end web development from Lynda.com courses while earning a degree in Graphic Design and now is a senior designer/developer for Weebly," said Rozanc. "Self motivated students can make themselves so much more valuable to employers with Lynda.com as a resource.”
