UMBC’s STRiVE retreat has inspired hundreds of undergraduate students in the past 14 years. Now it's your turn. Spend five days building community and developing skills while exploring leadership for social impact. You will emerge with greater clarity and confidence about the contributions you want to make.

This year’s STRiVE retreat will take place January 9-13, 2023. STRiVE participants will make new friends, discover their strengths and values, learn how to work more effectively in groups, envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. Past STRiVE participants have gotten deeply involved in campus organizations and initiatives, and have made phenomenal contributions.

To apply for a spot in STRiVE 2023, complete this form by Monday, November 7, 2022. 

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life hosts STRiVE in partnership with the Student Government Association, with support from PNC Bank. More information on this program is available below.

STRiVE will be helpful to any student regardless of previous involvement or leadership experience. No prior experience is necessary. For many participants, STRiVE will be their first step on the path to deep engagement at UMBC. We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their skills and applying them to contribute to positive change in the campus community. The application asks about campus involvement only to give the STRiVE planning team a sense of the different perspectives participants will bring to the retreat.

  There are 8 more Good Morning Commuter events left this semester. The last GMC of the semester will be on December 6th. 

As always Gold Cards are available for purchase at every GMC breakfast. Your GMC Gold Card is valid through next semester as well. 

Tuesday October 18th, will be our first breakfast in Sports Zone. Sports Zone is located on the Mezzanine (M) Floor of the Commons. Its also located next to Hissho.

Are you a resident of Maryland? Have you not had the chance to register to vote? Join Carlos and our close partners from The Center for Democracy & Civic Life to get help on registering, while enjoying some hot beverages and casual conversation.

 These SEA CIRTL Fellows will develop and implement a 1-week course for the SEA in an engineering topic of their choice with guided mentorship in Fall 2022 and Spring 2023, and implement the course with SEA in summer of 2023. Fellows will be required to attend a variety of sessions that help them solidify course ideas, learn about teaching approaches that are accessible and engaging for high school and middle school students, and plan their course. This will all count toward a CIRTL certificate, which is a nationally recognized teaching certificate! Upon teaching the course in Summer 2023, Fellows will be paid a minimum of $700/week for 1 or 2 weeks, with an opportunity for more depending on enrollment for the course.

Updated bivalent COVID-19 booster shots that target the newer strains seen in the past year are now available and can be administered at the same time as a Flu Shot.

It is important to take precautions to prevent the spread of influenza. Please take time to learn more about influenza from the CDC.

Getting a flu vaccination is again very important this year. It will help reduce the number of preventable hospitalizations related to flu, which will, in turn, support our nation’s medical community in ensuring that persons impacted by COVID-19 receive adequate and timely medical care.

Getting a flu vaccine helps to protect individuals, their households, and their communities from the spread of seasonal flu. It is possible to contract both COVID-19 and influenza.

Pharmacies around the UMBC area and your local care provider are potential options for vaccines. Remember to call ahead to ensure the location you plan to visit has vaccines available.
