<Title>Equifax Data Breach</Title>
<Tagline>What People Should Know About the Equifax Breach.</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content">As many have seen, Equifax had a breach of the personal information of approximately 143 million people.  This is one of the largest breaches of personally identifiable information ever.  Here are some things that people should do and know about the breach.<div>
    <ul>
    <li>The breach involved a combination of social security numbers, names, birth dates, and addresses.  Some drivers license numbers have also been breached.  The credit card numbers of approximately 209,000 U.S. consumers and dispute documents for approximately 182,000 U.S. consumers were also accessed.</li>
    <li>The main website for Equifax (equifax.com) has been incredibly slow since the breach.  They are likely being flooded with people trying to get information about the breach.  </li>
    <li>Equifax has setup a standalone website for the breach.  The web address for the standalone site is <a href="http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com">www.equifaxsecurity2017.com</a>.  It is much faster than going to equifax.com.  </li>
    <li>Some of Equifax's call center resources, to manage their data breach, were impacted by Hurricane Irma.  Call center wait times may be longer while Equifax gets additional call center resources in place.</li>

    <div>What should people do?</div>
    <div>
    <ul>
    <li>First, go to <a href="http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com">www.equifaxsecurity2017.com</a> and see if your information was released.  Also, don't assume if one person in your household / family was not breached that others in the same house weren't breached.  Each person needs to be checked.  As a personal example, my information was breached, but my wife's was not.</li>
    <li>If your information was breached, you will have to opportunity to sign up for credit monitoring.  Some reports are that you will be given a legal agreement to click through while signing up for the credit monitoring.  You should read it carefully; and if you have concerns about the terms of the agreement, consult with an attorney.</li>
    <li>Equifax has said that they will be sending letters in the mail to people who had their credit card numbers and dispute documents accessed.  Equifax has not announced plans to send letters to the remaining millions of people.  The only way they will know if they have been breached is through <a href="http://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com">www.equifaxsecurity2017.com</a>.</li>
    <li>If you do receive a letter that your credit card number has been stolen, immediately contact your credit card company to report the stolen number.  They will typically issue you a new card and number and cancel any fraudulent charges made on your account.  Nothing else typically needs to be done for a stolen credit card number.</li>
    <li>As a final step, make sure that you monitor your credit reports at least every 6-12 months going forward.  Once your information is in criminal hands, they can use it at any time in the future to try to open financial accounts and make purchases in your name.  Often the information isn't used for months or even years.  </li>

    <p><strong>This year’s keynote address will be given by Saundra McGuire, Ph.D., author of <em>Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate Into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation, </em>Stylus Publishing LLC, 2015. <br></strong></p>
    <p><strong>Keynote: Get Students to Focus on Learning Instead of Grades:  Metacognition is the Key!  </strong><span>21<span>st</span> Century students come to college with widely varying academic skills, approaches to learning, and motivation levels.  Faculty often lament that students are focused on achieving high grades, but are not willing to invest much time or effort in learning.  This session will focus on the importance of helping students acquire simple, but effective learning strategies based on cognitive science principles.  We will engage in interactive reflection activities that will allow attendees to experience strategies that significantly improve learning while transforming student attitudes about the meaning of learning.</span></p>
    <p>Dr. Saundra Yancy McGuire is the Director Emerita of the Center for Academic Success and retired Assistant Vice Chancellor and Professor of Chemistry at LSU. Prior to joining LSU, she spent eleven years at Cornell University, where she received the coveted Clark Distinguished Teaching Award.  She has delivered keynote addresses or presented workshops at over 250 institutions in 43 states and eight countries.  Her latest book, <em>Teach Students How to Learn: Strategies You Can Incorporate into Any Course to Improve Student Metacognition, Study Skills, and Motivation, </em>was released in October 2015.  The most recent of her awards is the 2017 American Chemical Society (ACS) Award for Encouraging Disadvantaged Students to Pursue Careers in the Chemical Sciences.  She received her B.S. degree, <em>magna cum laude</em>, from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, her Master’s degree from Cornell and her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she received the Chancellor’s Citation for Exceptional Professional Promise.</p>

    <p><span>The symposium has four goals:</span></p>
    <ol>
    <li><span>To recognize and discuss the issues surrounding mentoring in STEM fields.</span></li>
    <li><span>To discuss effective mentorship and advocacy techniques at all levels: PhD, Postdoc, Faculty</span></li>
    <li><span>To provide a platform to connect like-minded young scientists who wish to effect change at their own institutions at the grassroots level.</span></li>
    <li><span>To inspire participants to practice effective mentorship practices and promote these skill sets to their peers and colleagues at their own institutions.</span></li>
    </ol>

    <p><span>Among the many roles that scientists play, mentoring younger scientists is one which researchers are rarely trained for. In the current STEM research environment, where lack of funding is but one of the systemic issues faced by young scientists, the roles, responsibilities, and career trajectories are changing. Organizations such as Future of Research and Rescuing Biomedical Research have been formed in recent years to address systemic issues facing academic research. Others, such as the National Mentoring Research Network, have arisen to address the training needs of those who wish to remain in academia but receive no formal training in how to supervise and mentor students. Still, there are gaps in the cultural awareness and value of being an inspiring leader, promoting a positive work environment, and in having happy, mentally fit employees. Where other industries recognize these benefits, academic culture lags.</span></p>
    <p><span>But all of these issues are intertwined, and lead to the pessimism and learned helplessness found in many young researchers regarding their careers across the nation and the world. Because system, training, and culture all intersect to provide a scientist’s well-being and productivity, </span><a href="http://labmosphere.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Labmosphere</a> and <a href="http://futureofresearch.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Future of Research</a><span> are holding a conference in collaboration with UMD-College Park to discuss current mentorship practices and the way in which they could be improved upon.</span></p>
    <p><span>This whole day conference will take place at the end of National Postdoc Appreciation week (September 21</span>st<span>). It will consist of three speakers with break-out sessions in between the talks, as well as a mentorship panel at the end followed by discussion and a networking reception.</span></p>

    <div><span>Linda C. Hodges, Director of the Faculty Development Center, was Director of the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Center for Teaching and Learning at Princeton University from 2003-2009 before retiring to Maryland. She holds a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Kentucky and was a faculty member for over 20 years before transitioning into faculty development. Prior to coming to the McGraw Center in 2001, she was the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at Agnes Scott College near Atlanta, Georgia. During her faculty tenure at two different institutions, she taught a wide range of courses, participated in faculty governance, and served as department chair. In 1999 she was one of 28 faculty members chosen nationally to study and assess new pedagogical approaches as a Carnegie Scholar of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. She has published widely on her work in faculty development, engaged student learning, and effective teaching practices. Her special interests are in pedagogies of engagement and the scholarship of teaching and learning.</span></div>

    <p>The Faculty Development Center at UMBC extends an invitation to all UMBC AGEP and PROF-it students to participate.</p>
    <p><span><span>Join FDC </span></span><span>and Writing Center </span><span>staff to learn </span><span>how to create writing assignments that scaffold students’ writing skills, deepen their understanding and connection to the subject at hand</span><span>, and prepare them to adapt these skills to other situations</span><span>. </span><span>We’ll explore ways to help students focus on the writing process</span><span> with special attention to guiding students towards effective use of the Writing Center.  Lunch is provided.</span><br>

    <p><span>This interactive workshop, given by Stacie Mendoza, <em>Research Support Specialist</em>, will assist postdocs in identifying non-NIH sources of funding for their research. Topics will include:</span></p>
