SDS Revamps Their Test Submission Process With RT

<Tagline>Student Disability Services leveraged RT to create a better</Tagline>

They recently converted their traditional “pink form” faculty filled out with details on how to administer a student’s test (e.g., whether students could use a calculator, extended time, etc.). In the past, issues arose when instructors left fields blank or multiple emails had to be exchanged to clarify important information, which can now be required through the use of the campus Request Tracker (RT) ticketing system.
“...it streamlines how we take in tests.”

For students who need testing administered, using a system like RT helps create a dynamic system and improves data tracking for tests. “We’re really excited to have this system because it streamlines how we take in tests,” said Laura Hesselton, Testing Coordinator for SDS.

“Required” fields on the new online form prevent SDS from needing to exchange multiple emails to clarify important information. The new form also allows professors to submit one form for multiple students rather than filling out multiple hand-written forms. Additionally, it offers faculty a secure online test submission alternative. Instead of dropping off materials in person, attachments included with the submission are automatically saved in a secure Box folder that only designated SDS staff can access. Other RT users on campus cannot view the test attachments or tickets.

“They were so patient with making all the changes and making sure it worked,”

Working with DoIT proved to be a positive experience for SDS. When creating the RT form, SDS went through several changes, creating the need for DoIT to help adapt to SDS’s workflow needs. “They were so patient with making all the changes and making sure it worked,” said Hesselton. “It was awesome.”

Sondheim Rooms 101 & 409 to be Renovated Over Summer 2017

<Tagline>Partnership between DoIT, Provost, & Facilities Management</Tagline>

Beginning at the end of May 2017, Sondheim rooms 101 & 409 will undergo major renovations and be converted into active learning classrooms modeled after the upcoming Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB). Renovations are expected to be completed before the start of Fall 2017 with DoIT, the Office of the Provost, and Facilities Management all collaborating on the project.

“We want to make sure these facilities are suitable for faculty and students…”

The new active learning spaces will feature movable furniture and multiple flat panel displays throughout the room. Enhanced audio will allow faculty and students to have their voice projected thanks to a microphone and a speaker system throughout the room. A new wireless collaboration tool will allow students to share content from their personal devices on the room’s main display.

Antonio Moreira, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, said, “We want to make sure these facilities are suitable for faculty and students to have the learning environment they need, to really obtain the best education possible.”

“It is important that all three offices are engaged in these projects.”

The rooms will also receive major touch ups to their overall design including new windows, improved lighting, and upgraded finishes on floors, walls, and ceilings. In addition, new door lock sets, access control devices, and door operators will help improve accessibility for the rooms.

“This is the continuation of many collaborations for the ongoing improvements to classroom spaces. The Provost's Office, Facilities Management, and DoIT have collaborated on many projects identified by the classroom committee for many years in numerous buildings,” said Joe Rexing, Director Design and Construction Services for Facilities Management. “It is important that all three offices are engaged in these projects for the improvements.”

“We must develop more of these types of facilities... ”

DoIT, the Office of the Provost, and Facilities Management will use the feedback on these rooms from faculty and students to modify designs for rooms in the upcoming ILSB. “We must develop more and more of these types of facilities, where the students are excited to come to their class and the faculty have new ways of improving teaching and learning, and they need classrooms that provide that,” said Moreira.

“Sustaining Diverse and Inclusive Communities”

Thanks to generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Queens College has undertaken a three-year project led by faculty and students to advance understanding and formulate plans of action that foster diversity and inclusion in urban communities and higher education. As part of this, the College will host a two-day conference to showcase research by emerging scholars in the humanities and social sciences.

The two-day conference will be held on November 13-14, 2017, on the Queens College campus located in the heart of the world’s most diverse urban place. Our students hail from 150 different countries and speak 70 different languages. The conference will afford ample opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and contribute to the professional development of the emerging scholars who participate as well as for students and faculty from across CUNY. A special reception for undergraduates, held on the first evening of the conference, will provide them a chance to meet and talk with conference presenters and attendees to learn more about shared fields of interest and careers in higher education. Conference proceedings will be broadcast via the web and also captured for later podcasts, thus amplifying their impact. Publication of selected papers as a book is also planned. Finally, time will be set aside for interviews arranged in advance of the conference for open faculty positions at Queens College and other CUNY campuses to take advantage of this recruitment opportunity to enhance faculty diversity.

Scholars, especially those in the early stage of their career, are invited to propose papers no more than 30 minutes in length. While limited travel and accommodation support will be provided, participants are encouraged to solicit funding support from their home institutions.
