On April 13, 2017 (changed from March 1, 2017), we will be having our annual “Pathways to Leadership” seminar talk with Dr. Freeman Hrabowski. Everyone is invited to come.

On February 10, 2017, a panel will be held on the Salisbury University campus. Everyone is invited to come, and free transportation will be provided! Panel speakers will discuss the academic path in graduate school.

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure group will be conducting its quarterly system patching on Thursday, December 22nd from 5pm to 11pm.  While many systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services for short times during this window.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.

• The new web hosting environment (virthost and jabba) will be partially unavailable (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)
  
• Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail)
  
• All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched
• Expected to be unreachable from 5pm to 8pm
• All HFS (user) servers will be offline

PROMISE Alumna (College Park), Dr. Alycia Marshall, Professor at AACC, has shared this information:

Positions available:  Anne Arundel Community College has immediate openings for instructors of Astronomy and Physics courses.  Lectures and Lab sections are available. Must have a Master’s degree in a science field.  Teaching experience preferred.

Openings are for one, two or three days a week during the day at the main campus in Arnold, Maryland.  Most sections are day time, limited evening availability.  Classes begin Jan 18^th.  Interested applicants should send a resume or CV with a cover letter expressing their interest to Dr. Kirsten Casey (kacasey@aacc.edu).

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will be having its 8th Annual Regional Research Symposium on April 18, 2017. Abstracts are currently being accepted. Everyone is invited to come to attend, to present, and/or to support other fellow researchers. Details regarding the symposium are below.

non-UMES/UMBC students: $50.00 registration fee

UMBC students: fee will be waived for all UMBC students

• will not be able to process and send ILL requests for UMBC patrons from December 22 to January 3 as most of the libraries we borrow from will be closed as well
• If you request a book after December 11 you may not receive it until sometime in January
• plan accordingly (on average it takes about two weeks to get a book through ILL)
