Archives Gold #21: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th
Audio Cassette Tapes from UMBC Founders Oral History Project
Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a transcript and audio cassette tapes from the UMBC Founders Oral History Project.

Over the years several oral history projects have been initiated at UMBC. The first, by Dr. Ed Orser, was completed in the mid-1990s to celebrate UMBC's 30th anniversary. In 2006, Joseph Tatarewicz and Barry Lanman began the UMBC Founders Oral History Project in preparation for UMBC's 40th anniversary. Tatarewicz and Lanman interviewed some of the earliest figures on campus including UMBC's first chancellor Albin O. Kuhn, the first dean, founding faculty members, and some of the first students at UMBC.
In one of the early interviews with Albin O. Kuhn, Kuhn discusses the white silo that stands near the entrance to I-95. The silo is one of the oldest structures on the UMBC campus and one of the few reminders of Spring Grove Hospital which was located on the site of the UMBC university from 1867 to the 1960s. When Spring Grove sold the land to make way for UMBC, the campus decided to keep the silo. In his interview, Kuhn speaks of this decision.
"...they were kidding around campus that, calling that the Kuhn Silo because they knew that I had a farm background or an interest in, in fact, farming at the same time I was at UMBC...when they got the road network laid out the silo would not be in the way...and those are fairly heavy concrete things to remove, and I said, "Well, let thing stand. It won't bother anybody and it will be sort of a memory of the fact that this once was used as a farm for the Spring Grove."

Raley, Kelly Named Employees of Quarter
1st non-exempt, exempt EOQ recipients from same dept.
DoIT would like to recognize our own Pamela Raley and Ed Kelly for receiving the Employee of the Quarter (EOQ) award. The EOQ program recognizes the outstanding qualities and contributions of employees towards departmental and institutional goals and mission. This also marks the first time a department has had two employees win both the exempt and nonexempt awards in the same quarter. Pam and Ed will both receive a check for $500, a special parking space, and one day of administration leave.
In order to be eligible for the award, you must have been been employed at UMBC for 2 years and have made contributions to your department.
Pamela Raley has been named UMBC’s Nonexempt Employee of the Quarter effective January 1 through March 31, 2016.
Pamela Raley, Business Service Specialist for DoIT, began her career at UMBC in February 1997. Pam has worked as the DoIT payroll processor and liaison to HR, ensuring that all staff and hourly employees never miss a paycheck. Pam was presented the award on January 13, 2016, with many of the DoIT staff forming a parade line and marching into her office to announce the surprise to her and celebrate with cake.
Raymon Soellner, Network Manager for DoIT, nominated Pamela for the award. Soellner said “On many occasions she has volunteered to work from home and stayed late into the evening so that employees could stop by and submit late timesheets or supervisors could work with her to finish up work so she could make sure everything got handled quickly and correctly.”
When the transition to
electronic time sheets first began, Pam was one of the leaders in keeping everyone organized. “Pam never let an employee’s pay be affected by the onboarding and transitioning of new staff.” said Soellner, “She always worked with the supervisors as well as the technical staff to adjust the process and ensure that in the future no one would slip through the cracks in the system.”
When not working for DoIT, Pam is very active within her church and sponsors families throughout the year. She also encourages the department to donate to those who are less fortunate.
Ed Kelly has been named UMBC’s Exempt Employee of the Quarter effective January 1 through March 31, 2016.
Ed Kelly, PeopleSoft Technical Specialist for DoIT, received the Exempt Employee of the Quarter award on January 14, 2016, at a special staff “meeting” where various DoIT staff members congratulated him and celebrated with cake.
Ed was nominated by Arnold Foelster, Director of Enterprise Systems for DoIT. Foelster said “Ed was a PeopleSoft Technical trainer for eight years and his PeopleSoft technical skills are second to none. His genuine passion for sharing his knowledge has benefited DoIT and indirectly to the faculty, staff and students that we support.”
Ed began working for DoIT in 2010 in a temporary position and was brought on as his current position in 2011. One of his main projects was the
Profile Sharing Project, which allows students to share their student data like grades, schedule, and Blackboard activity with whoever they want. Ed worked closely with myUMBC portal architect Collier Jones to ensure that the correct data was being displayed to whoever the student designated. “Ed is a ninja,” Jones said, “and [is] extremely responsive to our needs.”

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will provide technical and programming support for hardware and software integral to Library services. Specific duties include: assisting in determining software upgrade paths for public, staff and system applications; troubleshooting and consulting as needed with DoIT and external vendors, and implementing appropriate solutions; working with the IT Librarian and Manager of Library Technology Operations in planning, implementing and supporting Library IT initiatives; assisting in responding to IT service requests; supporting web development and
online services, interactive applications, multimedia components, and interface design; supervising student assistants in projects as assigned; and performing other duties as assigned. Hours: Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. subject to change depending on the needs of the Library.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a High School Diploma or GED (Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science preferred) and two years with the types of hardware and software to be supported, one year of which included user support, user training, and/or programming. Experience in a library setting is preferred. Must have: knowledge of network configuration, backup, recovery and security practices; experience with Active Directory and Group Policy; experience troubleshooting networks; experience in developing and deploying computer images for both PCs and Macs; experience in developing and maintaining dynamic, data-driven web applications; experience with installation of operating systems, and documenting standard operation procedures; experience developing and coding interactive web applications using PHP, Ruby, HTML, XML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript, JQuery, AJAX, and/or other common tools.
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one
has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
SALARY: Pay Range 14 (minimum starting salary at $47,302) based on University System of
Maryland Pay Program.

Background: The first UMBC graduate student success seminar with President Freeman Hrabowski was held in 2004 as a result of a request from then public policy graduate student, Robert Alexander. Robert graduated soon after that first seminar. His work and research with the Centers for Disease Control has since reached national attention as Dr. Alexander was a leading contributor to the U.S.’ first federally funded anti-smoking campaign (Journal article in The Lancet, Article on Health Communication, Article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.) Dr. Alexander’s work with the Tips from Smokers campaign produced “shocking, but effective videos” according to the New York Times. Dr. Alexander returned to Maryland to be a Mentor-in-Residence for the PROMISE AGEP during the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the PROMISE Summer Success Institute (SSI) in August 2013. Dr. Alexander was a member of the first cohort of the PROMISE AGEP Peer Mentors for UMBC, 2004. He is currently the Director of Business Development for the Battelle Health and Analytics Business Unit, and still collaborates with the CDC (Read more about Dr. Alexander on Batelle’s website here.) We thank Dr. Alexander, whose request as a PhD candidate, launched the plans for our annual present-day Presidential “Pathways to Leadership” seminar for graduate students.

Downtime Saturday 2/20 at 9:00am for myUMBC, Sites and Wiki
We will taking downtime this Saturday morning at 9:00am for MyUMBC, our sites and wiki web environment starting at 9am. We expect each system to be down for a few minutes, and all work should be completed by 11am.
This outage is being done to patch the systems against a critical vulnerability in the glibc library used by many popular Linux distributions.
We are sorry for the short notice, but we felt it was critical to get these systems patched as soon as possible. We have put additional protections in place on our campus firewall that should stop attacks for the vulnerability for all of campus but we still encourage anyone running a Linux server to update their systems as soon as possible.

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a photograph of Otis Redding performing at Spring Week in 1967.

Otis Redding, perhaps the most famous musician to perform at UMBC, visited the young campus in April of 1967. UMBC was celebrating its first Spring Week (a celebration that would later be known as Quadmania) with a Saturday night dance, featuring well-known musician Otis Redding and his orchestra. Tickets were $5 for UMBC students and $7 for all other students.

eZuce ViewMe Video Conferencing Now Available to UMBC
Faculty and Staff can login and use the service for free
Formerly known as SeeVogh,
ViewMe is a video conferencing tool that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux,
Android, and
iOS. ViewMe is also available for integration with Polycom videoconferencing rooms connecting to the University of Maryland IVN System.
Set up for ViewMe is simple and straightforward, as faculty and staff do not need to request an account. On the
website to download the desktop client, the site will auto detect what OS you are running and automatically select which client you have to download.
Once installed, ViewMe allows for powerful collaboration with multiple video images, multiple simultaneously shared desktops and public and private text chat. Users can
create rooms and email your attendees the room details. You will also have the option of assigning an access pin allowing you to control who can join your meeting.
Rooms can have a duration from 1 day to 1 year. The amount of people that can simultaneously be in a room can range anywhere from 30-40 people at once.
Users can also
record their meetings and after converting them post them to Box, Google Drive, or Blackboard , opening up many possibilities for low cost distance learning.
