Requesting Software for Lab and Lecture Hall Image

<Tagline>Deadline for additions or changes is Saturday, October 31</Tagline>

In order to load all lab and lecture hall PCs with our standard set of software (known as an "image"), all requests for additions or changes for Spring 2015, the lab & lecture hall software "image" deadline is Saturday, Oct 31. All software requests must be made each semester (see instructions below).

To be added to the lab & lecture hall image, DoIT must have the following:

- Proof of purchase/licenses

- Media and software installation instructions

Please submit an RT ticket containing the required information or contact 410.455.3838 and a Technology Support Center (TSC) staff member will assist you. If the request is not received by the deadline, we can not guarantee the requested software will be made available.

For an instructor-only demo of software, please use a laptop. If you don't have a laptop, you can reserve by completing the AV Services Request Form. It will be available for pick up at AV Services (020 ENGR Bldg). Please allow 2-3 days for the request.

If you need software installed on the lab image for a one-time purpose (for example, a 2-day workshop in which all users need access to the software), the request should be submitted no less than six (6) weeks prior to the first lab reservation for that class. The software will be removed once you are finished.

An e-mail confirmation of the RT ticket will be sent to the requester once the software is installed, typically 1-2 week(s) before the first use of the software; faculty/instructors need to then test the software to ensure everything is working as expected for class. Support for the software is the responsibility of the instructor or department who requested that the software be installed.

Again, proof of purchase and/or license must be provided for as many copies as will be needed for the students in the class. We cannot install software without appropriate proof of licensing.

Although DoIT will make every effort to get all software packages to work, we can not guarantee that they will. Some packages may not function in our environment as they must coexist with many other applications. Additional information on this process can be found here.

One of the issues that we’re tackling within the ivory tower is the need for faculty diversity. Some programs are beginning to make strides with undergraduate college completion among people from underrepresented groups, and we continue to work on broadening participation of graduate students and postdoctoral trainees in STEM fields. However, the composition of college faculty is one of the remaining bastions of the old guard, one that is has very little diversity especially in STEM fields, and particularly in areas such as engineering and computer science.

Combat the deficit, flood the gates

I would like to issue a challenge, or perhaps it should be a charge to diverse students and postdocs, especially in STEM fields: flood the gates. Apply for the open faculty positions. Here are 7 reasons why you should apply for open faculty positions, beyond the fact that the numbers of diverse faculty are sparse.

This week we present a photograph in The Retriever Weekly from UMBC's Annual Homecoming Bonfire in 2008.

A much newer Homecoming tradition at UMBC is the annual Homecoming Bonfire on Erickson Field. First starting in 2005, the bonfire is an iconic tradition among the Homecoming festivities at UMBC. The idea for a bonfire came from First Year council member Thomas Locastro who gathered support for the event in October 2005. He had the honors of lighting the fire that year, as well as in 2006 and 2007. Since then, the annual bonfire lighting has taken place each year, except for two years when the event had to be canceled due to rain and bad weather. Activities at the bonfires over the years have included fireworks, movie showings, pancake eating contests, and free food.

In 1975, a group of UMBC students came together to form the first Homecoming Committee hoping to bring tradition and celebration to the UMBC campus. Their proposed motto "It Feels So Good" was chosen for the campus' first Homecoming in February of 1976 believing that it expressed "the feelings of alumni as they greet old friends" and "the wishes of the whole UMBC community to enjoy the pride and the sense of tradition that other schools possess" (1976 Homecoming Committee booklet). Students, faculty, staff, administrators, and UMBC alumni were invited to take part in the celebration with various activities and events, including a pep rally, a mixer featuring band "Climb-A-Donkey," and a homecoming basketball game against the Towson Tigers.
