It is my pleasure to be one of the many mentors for Kavita Krishnaswamy, a graduate student in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at UMBC. Kavita’s doctoral advisor is Dr. Tim Oates. Kavita has participated in many programs that have been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, including NSF GRFP, ACCESS STEM, LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate, CMU/Pitt Quality of Life Technology Center – Engineering Research Center, and the PROMISE AGEP.
I’ve been working with Kavita for several years, through classes, her proposal, her internship, etc. Kavita is a joy. In a post a few years ago, I wrote, about how Kavita doesn’t let Spinal Muscular Atrophy stop her. July 2015 Summer Horizons: Apply to Graduate School! Special Speaker: UMBC’s President, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski
UMBC will host the annual Summer Horizons program for undergraduate students and others who are interested in learning more about graduate school admission, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The 3-hour workshop will feature sessions on the application timeline, GRE, Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters, and other topics related to preparing for graduate school. There will be a panel hosted by current graduate students, and the keynote speaker will be the President of UMBC, Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, III.

The 2015 Summer Horizons program is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about UMBC and the graduate admissions process. The graduate school preparation material that we will present is applicable to most U.S. institutions. Faculty and staff may invite prospective students to this event. Visitors from out-of-town are welcome to attend. Invitations are extended to:
- All UMBC undergraduate students
- As part of the PROMISE Pathways project, undergraduate and master’s students from schools within the University System of Maryland (USM) have a special invitation to attend
- Students from all summer programs within the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) region
- Students from NSF programs such as LSAMP, AGEP, NSF ERC, RDE etc., at any school
- McNair programs at any school.
- Students from organizations such as SHPE, SACNAS, NSBE, and AISES at any school in the country are welcome to attend.
- Students from any college or university, who are either local or will travel the distance to learn more about graduate school.
- We also invite professionals who are considering returning to graduate school for an advanced degree.
This program is free, but participants must register.
Summer Horizons is co-sponsored by PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP, The Meyerhoff Graduate Biomedical Fellows Program, and The Graduate School at UMBC.

Metered visitor parking is available in the Commons Garage. To get to the Commons Garage, circle around Hilltop Circle (either direction) until you reach Commons Drive. Take Commons Drive toward the center for campus. The garage will be on your left. Meter fees are $.25 for each 15 minutes, quarters only, maximum time of 5 hours.

Faculty, Staff Prepare for Blackboard's Annual Conference

Once a year Blackboard hosts
the BbWorld conference over four days for faculty, students, administrators, instructional technology specialists, training professionals, developers, and system administrators. In 2015, the conference is in Washington, D.C. from July 20-23.
This year, Blackboard introduces
the virtual conference experience -- a free opportunity to

Used by more than 5,000 students, UMBC has standardized its student response system, or “clickers,” on the Turning Technologies platform. This systems supports instant student feedback to questions posed by faculty in the classroom, which can be integrated into PowerPoint presentations or faculty can asked questions on the fly. The results display of all student responses and allows the instructor to tailor instructor based on what students do (or don’t) understand before moving on to new content. Turning Point also integrates with Blackboard so that instructors can access participant list of registered users and send grades to the gradebook. Using the clickers is a great way to engage your students and assess their knowledge of course content.

Charm City history comes alive in new digital collection
Baltimore Collection photographs now online
UMBC
students, faculty, and staff now have access to a new online collection of
Baltimore photographs through UMBC’s Digital Collections. The Baltimore
Collection, which includes approximately 96 photographs and negatives,
represents contributions from various donors that have been compiled to
showcase the rich history of our city. The original photographs are available for view at Special Collections.
The Baltimore Collection features a wide
range of images that capture prominent historical figures and events in
Baltimore, as well as scenes from daily life in and around the city. These photographs
offer a detailed and vivid look at life in Baltimore in the nineteenth and
early twentieth centuries, highlighting memorable events that have shaped the
city’s past and defined its landscape while showcasing the Baltimoreans who
lived during this time.
Highlights
Among the photographs in the
Baltimore Collection are several images depicting the aftermath of the Great
Baltimore Fire, which took place on February 7 and 8, 1904. Nearly 86 city
blocks and over 1500 buildings were destroyed during the fire. Images in the
collection portray the extent of the fire’s damage, from crumbling foundations
of former buildings to wide expanses of city streets that have been reduced to
piles of rubble.
The Baltimore Collection also
features images of the Baltimore Sesqui-Centennial in 1880, which celebrated
the 150th anniversary of the founding of Baltimore. The photographs
show streets and buildings throughout Baltimore, including the Washington
Monument in Mount Vernon Place and the Baltimore Sun Building, decorated with
flags, banners, and commemorative arches.
In addition to images of historic
events and daily life, the Baltimore Collection also contains negatives of the
iconic Edgar Allan Poe. These images include portraits and magazine photographs
of Poe as a younger man and later in life. The collection also features
photographs of Poe’s memorial grave in the Westminster Burying Ground in
Baltimore.

UMBC’s
Special Collections is also open to the public by appointment in the summer and as well as Monday through Friday from
1pm-4pm, with extended hours on Thursday until 8 pm during the semester.

Dissertation House as a pre-conference event for the PROMISE SSI at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve, August 13-14, 2015
The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) is sponsoring the University System of Maryland-wide Dissertation House at the PROMISE Summer Success Institute, August 13-15, 2015. All participants will work on their dissertations on Thursday evening, and all day Friday, and will attend activities for the #ThinkBigDiversity 2015 PROMISE Summer Success Institute on Saturday, August 15, 2015.
All events will be held at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve. As part of the Dissertation House, and as a transition to the events for the Saturday PROMISE SSI, there will be a special evening dessert session and book discussion: Sisters in the Dissertation House on Friday night, hosted by book author Dr. Jennifer Bacon, and led by Dr. Shanna Smith.

University System of Maryland (USM) Dissertation House at the PROMISE Summer Success Institute – August 13-15, 2015
The University of Maryland, Baltimore and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring a system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs. The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve. Lodging for 2 nights and meals are provided for student participants. Eligibility for the SSI Dissertation House:
1) Enrolled in a STEM graduate program (based on the NSF-supported fields per the NSFGRFP) at one of the schools within the University System of Maryland
2) Underrepresented according to the NSF Definition for AGEP, U.S. Citizen
Per NSF.gov: AGEP is committed to the national goal of increasing the numbers of underrepresented minorities (URMs), including those with disabilities, entering and completing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate education and postdoctoral training to levels representative of the available pool. URMs include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.
This event is part of the 2015 PROMISE Summer Success Institute. Following the Dissertation House (DH) sessions on Thursday and Friday, all DH participants will be required to continue participation in the PROMISE SSI on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve:

Meet TSC Senior Student Consultant Christian Oyson
A look into everyday life at the Technology Support Center
For over a year, Christian Oyson has worked Tier 1 support for the
Technology Support Center (TSC) here at UMBC, providing assistance to students, faculty and staff. Oyson, a senior majoring in Informations Systems with a minor in Computer Science, started out at the TSC in summer 2014 as a student consultant. On a daily basis, the TSC gets a variety of calls ranging from user accounts, computer issues, phones, to internet complications and blackboard assistance. “If it’s anything technology related, we can try to assist you.” says Oyson.
On average, working at the TSC fluctuates depending on the hour and how many people are on duty. During a regular semester, there are two to three students working at a time and get about ten calls per shift. “Most people that call us do tend to be friendly,” says Oyson “but sometimes we can get calls from people frustrated on their issue and we do what we can to keep them calm while assessing the situation.”
Not all calls lead to a complex solution. Oyson recalls one call he had that was a simple fix involving a user who could not turn on their computer even though everything appeared fine. He had asked them if the computer was plugged in securely to an outlet, to which the user replied that it was plugged into a power strip. Oyson then followed up with his question and asked if the power strip was turned on, something the user did not think of. “The next thing I hear on the phone were happy cheers and sighs of relief.” Oyson said “I guess the saying "Try turning it on and off again" does come in handy.”
Not every call is as easy, and when it is really busy, such as during the first few weeks in the beginning of the semester or during a campus wide situation, the TSC springs into action. Oyson says “If it gets extremely busy, all hands on deck. Depending on how many are on duty, we have a rotation system determining who takes the call, but if things get really busy, then whoever is available has the call.”
Joining the TSC can be a great opportunity to break into the tech field and boost your communication skills according to Oyson. He mentions that starting out is challenging, but it gets easier as it goes on. “At the TSC, we talk to people from all walks of life: Old and young, tech experts and novices, and people from around the world.” Oyson says “You really don't know who you are talking to until you answer the call. With that said in mind, be ready and familiar with various approaches on how to tackle on a situation.”
Oyson will continue his work at the TSC through the upcoming fall semester. “I plan to continue working this position until I graduate in the spring of 2016 gaining as much knowledge and experience I can in preparation for the IT career ahead of me” Oyson said.
