<Title>AD network share drive downtime this Friday at 6:00pm</Title>

    <span>As part of our continuing commitment to security the servers that provide the department network shared drives need to be taken down so the operating system can be upgraded and patched.</span><br><br><span>This Friday, August 15th at 6:00pm, these servers will be taken off-line. This will impact connectivity to the network shared drives with letters H: and P:. Connectivity to these shared drives should be fully restored by </span><span>10:00pm</span><span> that evening. While there is no action required for end users, people may want to reboot their machine Monday morning to ensure all the drive mappings reconnect properly.</span>

    <p><span><strong>The Baltimore Camera Club: 130 Years of Photographic Education and Excellence </strong></span></p>
    <div>The Baltimore Camera Club -- one of the oldest photographic societies in the United States -- turns 130 years old this year! And what better way to celebrate than to explore the history of this illustrious group at UMBC’s Special Collections? Founded in 1884, the Baltimore Camera Club maintains a dedication to exploring the art and science of photography, offering members the opportunity to learn more about photographic process, participate in outings, and enter their in photography competitions.</div>

    <div>If you’re interested in the history of the Baltimore Camera Club, <a href="http://aok.lib.umbc.edu/specoll/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Special Collections</a> is the place to be. Graciously donated by the Club and its members, the Baltimore Camera Club collection is home to a wide variety of photographs, documents and artifacts relating to their lengthy history. Check out the huge collection of trophies and certificates awarded for photographic excellence, or browse the number of documents of the Club’s financial and member history, including handwritten ledger books from the turn of the century. Among the many items in the collection is a series of scrapbook pages featuring meeting announcements, newspaper clippings, and photographs of the club’s founding members, which offers the opportunity to gain a peek into how such a long-lasting club got its start.</div>

The collection contains a number of member-created photographs, including
    prints by some of the their most famous members, like Edward Bafford and A.

<Title>LDAP-master and webadmin downtime on 8/21/2014</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Hello all.<div><br></div>
    <div>On Thursday, August 21st starting at 2pm LDAP-Master and Webadmin will be taken down for system maintenance.  During this time account creations and password changes will be unavailable.  Account authentication and logins will not be affected during this downtime.  <div><br></div>
    <div>The maintenance window will allow staff to apply needed security and application updates.  The outage window is expected to last two hours with services being restored by 4pm on Thursday, August 21st.  <div><br></div>
    <div>During the outage window account creations will be queued and then processed upon restoration of services.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our Technology Support Center at x53838.</div>

<Title>Server Patching Friday August 22nd</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>As part of our ongoing commitment to security, the Unix Infrastructure will be conducting its quarterly patching of systems.  While many of the systems will be patched without any service disruption, there are several systems which require the downtime of key services.  The schedule below outlines which key services will be offline and for how long.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>Friday August 22nd, 6pm to 12am</span></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>Access to Cyrus and UMBC Webmail (accounts not migrated to UMBC Gmail) </span></p></li>
    <ul>
    <li><p><span>All mail will be queued up and delivered after the server is patched</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Expected to be unreachable from 6pm to 8pm</span></p></li>
    </ul>
    <li><p><span>myUMBC lite page will be up resulting in reduced myUMBC functionality</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>The sites (wordpress) web hosting environment will be unreachable </span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>The new web hosting environment will be down (pages will be available but any database calls will not work)</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>All HFS (user) servers will be offline</span></p></li>
    <li><p><span>Student mySQL databases will be offline</span></p></li>

    <li><p><span>RT will be down (expected to be down 6pm to 8pm)</span></p></li>

    <br><p><span>Technology Support Center (TSC) student consultants are the first points of technical contact for the UMBC community and those who do well often go on to work in other areas of the Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Minimally, consultants are expected to provide initial triage and support for a wide-range of information technologies including accounts, hardware, instructional technologies, networking, software, telecommunications, and basic web development.</span></p>

    <br><ul><li><p><span>Provide technical assistance to users by phone, online and in person;</span></p></li></ul>

<Title>Departmental shared drive downtime this Friday at 6:00pm</Title>

    <span>As part of our continuing commitment to security the servers that provide the department network shared drives need to be taken down so the operating system can be upgraded and patched.</span><br><br><span>This Friday, July 18th at 6:00pm, these servers will be taken off-line. This will impact connectivity to all network shared drives with letters I: through Z: with the exception of the P: (Peoplesoft) drive. Connectivity to the shared drives should be fully restored by 10:00pm that evening. While there is no action required for end users, people may want to reboot their machine Monday morning to ensure all the drive mappings reconnect properly.</span><br><br><span>If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.</span><br><br><span>Thank you,</span><br><br><span>Damian Doyle</span>

    <div class="html-content">To support faculty ongoing Blackboard support needs,  DoIT will be offering additional weekly drop-in hours beginning Wednesday, August 20. A DoIT staff member will be available to work one-on-one with users who show up during the designated times.<br><br>Drop-In sessions will focus on one of the many tools we support, including the following:<br><ul>

    </ul>Given variation in user needs and scheduling, the Drop-In format will be as follows:<br><ol>

    <strong>Orientation</strong> (5 minutes): A quick overview of what the tool does. If all you want is a demo, come early.</li>
    <li>
    <strong>Recommendations</strong> (10 minutes): 1-2 tips based on our observations from providing faculty support, as well identification of effective practices  and practitioners.</li>

    <strong>Q &amp; A</strong> (40 minutes): This is your time. What do you want to know? What's a problem you'd like to solve or a new opportunity you'd like to explore?</li>

<Title>University System of Maryland Dissertation House at SSI, August 14-15, 2014</Title>

    <p>The University of Maryland, College Park  and PROMISE Maryland’s AGEP are sponsoring a system-wide Dissertation House for graduate students in STEM programs.  The writing and research retreat will take place at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve.   Lodging for 2 nights and meals are provided for student participants.   Twelve students from the USM system schools will be chosen to participate in this research and writing retreat.  <a href="http://www.thehotelarundel.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.thehotelarundel.com/</a></p>
