    <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><p>Career Services is currently accepting applications for Career Peer Advisors. <br></p><p>Career Peer Advisors assist the Career Services Center in extending career services and information to the UMBC student body. Students must be able to commit at least one academic year to the following duties and responsibilities: take walk-in appointments, review resumes and cover letters; facilitate workshops/seminars; help market CSC services and programs to UMBC student body; design and present group information meetings upon request to student organizations, residence halls, and other groups; provide general office reception duties; conduct outreach to student organizations and one of three colleges (Engineering and Information Technology, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural and Mathematical Sciences); work closely with  CSC staff on special projects as needed.  Training will be provided. Hours:  10-12 per week.</p><p><strong>Note: All majors encouraged to apply.</strong></p><p><strong><br></strong></p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p>Continuing undergraduate or graduate student with at least a 2.75 GPA; strong interest in helping others and working with students, staff, employers, and faculty; in good academic standing; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; experience with public speaking helpful; ability to use tact and diplomacy in working with others both face to face and on the phone; previous or current involvement in campus organizations or activities helpful; computer literacy and comfort with PowerPoint presentation technology; detail oriented, dependable and reliable; initiative and enthusiasm. <Title>Using Box to Collect and Assess Job Applications</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>An increasing number of departments are using the Box "upload by email" option as an effective way to conduct job searches. Apart from making it easy to collect applications, committee members can assess and even “vote” on applications remotely, saving face-to-face meetings for reaching consensus on applications where none exists yet.</span></p><p><span>For general help on Box see the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/display/faq/Box+at+UMBC" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Need Help</span></a><span>” link at </span><a href="http://box.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>box.umbc.edu</span></a><span>, but here are some basic steps DoIT recommends for using Box on a search committee:</span></p><ol><li><p><span>Create an "Applications" or "Applicants" folder, anywhere in Box where you’d like to receive applications.  Maybe add "Qualified" and "Unqualified" subfolders, too, for sorting the received files. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Give your committee access to the folder(s) you just created. </span></p></li><li><p><span>Find the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address function for the "Applications" folder, located under "email options." Note: By default, this address is is NOT enabled for “collaborators only.” This is good, because you want applicants to be able to use the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address, too.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Include the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address in your formal job posting for how interested parties should apply.</span></p></li><li><p><span>Ideally, ask applicants to submit their materials as a single .pdf file to the “</span><a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/0QAxAg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>upload by email</span></a><span>” address for your Box folder. Why? A single file is preferable so the search committee doesn’t have to hunt and gather multiple files per applicant (e.g., cover letter, resume, references, etc.).</span></p></li><li><p><span>Once you’re ready to begin the review of applications, ask your committee members to add a </span><span>“Yes, No or Maybe”</span><span> comment to each applicant’s file in Box before the committee’s first face-to-face meeting. This way, you can spend your time trying to reach consensus on applicants where there clearly is no conensus.</span></p></li></ol><p><span>There's really only one intervention that DoIT recommends for step #3 above: create an easy to remember email alias (such as "<a href="mailto:yourdepartmentjobsearch@umbc.edu">yourdepartmentjobsearch@umbc.edu</a>") to replace the machine generated, difficult-to-remember email address that is created by default. To do so, submit an </span><a href="http://my.umbc.edu/help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>RT ticket</span></a><span> requesting creation of the alias for your submissions. Where do you work in the library and how long have you worked there?</strong> <br>Circulation department. 2 years as a student assistant, and since April 2012 as a staff member.<br><br><strong>2. What would you like the campus community to know about your job? </strong><br>I take care of the course reserves for the campus. If it’s on reserve, it has passed through my hands. I handle copyright processing on these items as well. <br><br><strong>3. What’s your favorite aspect of working at UMBC? </strong><br>The campus is so familiar to me. Between attending as an undergrad and working here as staff, I’ve gotten to know the community very well. I can honestly say that it is a pleasure to be a part of it all and that I am proud of what we accomplish. <br><br><strong>4. Do you have a favorite project, event, or memory from your time working in the library?</strong><br>The addition of the RLC was a lot of fun for me because I love to see the campus changing. In addition to providing students with a much needed 24-hour study space, it allowed the rest of the library to rethink our layout and service points. <br><br><strong>5. If you were a UMBC student, what library services would you use/appreciate the most? </strong><br>The online database access is extremely valuable. In my first undergrad, I relied on these systems to get me through my late night procrastination projects. Not that I recommend this behavior, of course. <br><br><strong>6. If you had to survive on a desert island with only one book, movie, or TV show, what would it be and why?</strong><br>BBC’s Sherlock. Every time I watch it, I see something new. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. <br><br><strong>7. A wizard has turned you into your favorite animal. What are you?</strong><br>A polar bear. Appears cute and cuddly, but is not messing around. <br><br></div>

<Title>Sherri Braxton-Lieber Named Dir. of Instructional Technology</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>I am pleased to announce that Dr. <strong>Sherri Braxton-Lieber</strong>, Special Assistant to the Provost and Director of Course Redesign at Bowie State University (BSU), has accepted UMBC’s Director of Instructional Technology position in the Division of Information Technology. She will start full-time on Tuesday, May 27, and serve as the primary point of contact for DoIT’s <a href="http://doit.umbc.edu/itnm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">instructional technology</a> support efforts.</div><div><br></div><div>With more than 17 years of experience in traditional classroom instruction, Sherri also brings over 14 years of experience using learning technologies in higher education settings. Among her current duties at BSU, Sherri provides leadership and oversight of the academic computing staff supporting faculty in course redesign, effective use of educational technologies to improve learning outcomes, and the design, development and implementation of online courses. She drafted BSU’s strategic plan for online learning and serves as BSU’s liaison to the University System of Maryland’s Academic Transformation initiatives. She was also an assistant professor of computer science at BSU from 1998 to 2003. </div><div><br></div><div>Before assuming her administrative role at Bowie in 2010, Sherri served as an adjunct faculty member, Senior Instructional Designer and then Director of Distance Education at the Johns Hopkins University Engineering for Professionals (JHU-EP) Online Distance Learning Center. She served as the subject matter expert in the area of distance education and worked with faculty, chairs and senior management to lead the program through its first course reviews and certifications under <a href="http://www.qualitymatters.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Quality Matters</a>, the highly-regarded, voluntary national peer review process for effective online and hybrid/blended learning. She also teaches online for University of Maryland, University College (UMUC) and Walden University.</div><div><br></div><div>Sherri holds a Sc.D in Computer Science with minors in Educational Leadership and Management Science from George Washington University (2000), a Master’s in Computer Science with Mathematics minor from North Carolina State University (1994), and a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science with Mathematics minor from Wake Forest University (1992). </div><div><br></div><div>A resident of Clarksville, MD, Sherri and her husband, Sam, have two children Ethan (11) and Sarah (7). <Title>UMBC Response to Heartbleed Security Incident</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>A major security vulnerability named </span><span>Heartbleed</span><span> was disclosed Monday night.  The vulnerability affects a large portion of websites on the Internet, and here at UMBC, that use the "<strong>https:" </strong>protocol for secure web traffic. Many servers that support "<strong>https:"</strong>  utilize a package named OpenSSL to encrypt webpages.  The <strong>"https:" </strong>protocol, which is referred to as SSL or secure socket layer, is a cryptographic protocol which is designed to provide secure communication over the Internet. The vulnerability could allow usernames and passwords being exchanged over the web to be stolen.</span><br><div><span><br></span><span>Starting with the announcement on Monday evening, DoIT staff have been working to understand the risks, determine which systems are vulnerable, and take the necessary steps to remediate or lessen the risk. DoIT classifies system risk from 0 - very low to 3 (very high).  Over the last two days we have patched or remediated all of our level 2 and 3 servers. We expect to have all systems patched this week.  In addition, we are working with departmental IT staff to identify and address issues in the departments. We also continue to work closely with commercial partners to patch devices and equipment that may be impacted</span><br>

    <span>Prior to this event occurring, DoIT was planning to move forward with a <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/news/43156" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mandatory password change</a> for all users starting the end of April. As a precaution, we are looking at expediting this process and will be sending out another message on this early next week to expedite that process. </span><br>

<Title>Classroom/Event Scheduling Downtime (R25)</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Please note that the Classroom and Event scheduling system known as R25 will be down from 4-15-2014 through 4-17-2014. <br><br>The downtime is needed to complete phase 1 of 2 for migrating the current R25 scheduling solution to the cloud .     <p>Diversity in Life Science Programs (DLSP) at Keystone Symposia has just been advised that it will receive additional funds to support assistant professors and scientists from industry at an equivalent level who wish to attend Keystone Symposia meetings. The particular meetings available to attend are listed below. These are the only meetings available for this particular funding. The award is a reimbursement award, and will cover registration fees, lodging, airfare and ground transit.</p>

    <p>The time frame is very tight and I ask for your help in sharing this information with any assistant professor or scientist from industry at equivalent level in life and biomedical sciences. You can forward this message or advise individuals to contact me directly. Please share on your networks right away. The eligibility criteria are as follows:</p>

    <li>Applicant must be assistant professor or scientist from industry at equivalent level</li>
    <li>Applicant must be engaged in laboratory research and have a particular research question which they are working to answer</li>
    <li>Applicant’s research must  be applicable to one of the meetings listed in the lower portion of this message</li>
    <li>Applicant must be a member of a federally designated underrepresented population (African American, Hispanic American,  Native American or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander)</li>
    <li>Applicant must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States</li>
    <li>Applicant must be in life or biomedical sciences</li>
    <li>We ask that the applicant, if awarded, consider mentoring a student in his/her laboratory for a period of one year</li>

    <p>The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is pleased to announce a limited number of awards to assist young researchers who graduated no earlier than 2009 and students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in statistics, biostatistics, survey methodology or a related area in a U.S. university to attend the conference on <em>Frontiers of Hierarchical Modeling in Observational Studies, Complex Surveys and Big Data</em>.  The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) is the nation’s oldest and largest program offering graduate training in the principles and practices of survey research.  Please visit  <a href="http://www.jpsm.umd.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.jpsm.umd.edu/</a> to learn more about JPSM.</p>
