<Title>WT2013 and SP2013 Bb Course Shells Created on 12/1</Title>

    <p>Bb course shells for both SP2013 and WT2013 were created on December, 1, 2012.  The course shells for SP2013 are located on the Bb production server at <a href="http://blackboard.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://blackboard.umbc.edu</a>.  As <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/news/15977" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">previously announced</a> WT2013 courses will be run on a separate server at <a href="http://bb-winter.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://bb-winter.umbc.edu</a>.  The Bb production server will be taken offline from January 4 - 14, 2013 while it is <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit/news/20355" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">being upgraded</a>.  <strong>All courses and organizations on the Bb production server will be unavailable during that time.</strong>  If you require any past Bb content for your WT2013 courses please make sure to <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/x/FIBaAQ" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">export</a> it prior to midnight January 3, 2013.<br></p>
    <p>Enrollments for both SP2013 and WT2013 courses will continue to be updated daily. Bb shells are available for all courses (designated as lecture, lab, field or discussion) listed in the <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Schedule of Classes (SOC)</a>, provided that there is an <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/blogs/oit-news/archives/2010/08/how_new_employe_1.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">instructor of record</a>
     listed. The addition of new course sections and instructors will result in new Bb shells being automatically generated each morning. Student enrollment in Bb will continue to mirror the official registration in
    SA, and will update hourly.</p>

    <p>If you are an instructor, and your name is not associated with the course you are teaching in the <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SOC</a>, please see your departmental scheduling coordinator to get that issue resolved. Once you are listed in the <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/schedule" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SOC</a>, your Bb course shell will be created automatically.<br></p>

    <p>Additionally in situations where one instructor is teaching multiple sections of the same course, by default all sections will be combined into one Bb course shell. If you want to have separate shells for different sections, or if you need a shell for for a research or independent study course, please submit a <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/doit/blackboard/requestbbshell.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new course request</a> or <a href="https://my.umbc.edu/go/request-help" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">submit an RT ticket</a> with your request. </p>

    As a reminder, all Bb course shells are initially unavailable to students until the instructor <a href="https://wiki.umbc.edu/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=1867862" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">makes it available</a>.</div>

    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><strong><u>Here are some highlights and follow-up points.</u></strong></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>1) WORKING WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: The handout that accompanies Vice Provost Cynthia Hill's talk on "Working with students with disabilities" can be found here: <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/system/shared/attachments/d3aaa37f65812ec1795d5a06403030f2/5037dd38/group-documents/000/002/346/64ff7983a47d331b13a81156e2f4d29d/8-24-12%20-%20Working%20with%20Students%20with%20Disabilities%20-%20Teaching%20and%20Learning%20Workshop%20for%20TAs%20and%20Graduate%20Students.pdf?1345838384" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://my.umbc.edu/system/shared/attachments/d3aaa37f65812ec1795d5a06403030f2/5037dd38/group-documents/000/002/346/64ff7983a47d331b13a81156e2f4d29d/8-24-12%20-%20Working%20with%20Students%20with%20Disabilities%20-%20Teaching%20and%20Learning%20Workshop%20for%20TAs%20and%20Graduate%20Students.pdf?1345838384</a>.  It is also attached at the bottom of this message.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>2) DR. DELUTY'S TALK: Dr. Deluty's books are available in the bookstore. Take care to remember his "Perfectionist" poem. It is a favorite. Remember that your comfort should not be brief ... don't stifle the hope of lasting relief!</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>3) TEACHING A FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR: More information about the IHU and teaching one of those courses can be found here: <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/undergrad_ed/ihu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://www.umbc.edu/undergrad_ed/ihu/</a>.  Assistant Vice Provost Jill Randles is the contact person.</div>
    <div><br></div>

    <div><br></div>
    <div>5) QUOTE to remember from John Fritz (DOIT) about Blackboard:<em> "Students who get a 'D' or 'F' use Blackboard 40% less than students who get a 'C' or higher."</em>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>6) SKILLSOFT: Jill Wardell from UMBC's Training and Organization Development unit is working with us to pilot SkillSoft e-learning tools and preparation for certifications that can enhance your career. Please take the poll to let us know about your interests: <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/promise/discussions/4964" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">http://my.umbc.edu/groups/promise/discussions/4964</a>.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>7) DELUTY: Paraphrased quote from Dr. Deluty:<em> "If you get a 'C' or less and have to take a course again, don't view it as a failure, view it as an opportunity to master the material." </em>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>8) PROF-IT: Save the dates for other upcoming PROF-it seminars: Fridays from 12 noon to 2:00 PM on October 5, November 2, and December 7 in Commons 329. </div>

<Title>New Features in Blackboard Collaborate 12</Title>

Previously created or recorded Bb Collaborate sessions remain on version 11, but any sessions created after August 13 will automatically be on version 12.  There are several <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit-hybrid/documents/2307" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new features</a> or improvements, most notably echo cancellation.  This makes it much easier to participate in a session using the computer's built in microphone and speakers, vs. requiring a headset/ microphone.  Other <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit-hybrid/documents/2307" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new features </a>include new chat options, and easier access for moderators to view global permissions or to give control of shared applications to participants.  More information on these <a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit-hybrid/documents/2307" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new features</a> can be found in<a href="http://my.umbc.edu/groups/doit-hybrid/documents/2307" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> this document.</a><br><br>An introductory Bb Collaborate Training Workshop has been scheduled for August 27, from 2-3:30 pm in ENGR 025.
