Due to popular demand, Retriever Integrated Health is once again partnering with Safeway pharmacy to host another flu vaccination and COVID-19 booster clinic on November 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Retriever Activities Center.
Off-campus guests, including family members, are welcome.
Remember, as we enter flu season, an influenza vaccine is an important step in keeping yourself and others well. The COVID-19 Pfizer and Moderna boosters are now available for those who are eligible; both the Pfizer and Moderna booster will be available at the clinic. Completing your Master's Thesis or Ph.D. Dissertation should be treated as a full-time job. Consider joining this session if you are struggling to put down a plan for yourself or follow up with your schedule to finish your degree. In this event, you will learn how and when to ask for help, what your research advisor job is, how to create a realistic timeline to finish your degree, time management skills, and how to navigate uncertainty.

Join Dr. Carter-Veale, a Dissertation Coach nationally recognized for helping hundreds of students finish their degrees. Dr. CV has obtained master's degrees from Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; her services include helping students navigate sticky situations, leverage productivity techniques, and overcome barriers to promptly complete their degree.

About our speaker:

Dr. Carter-Veale has over 15 years of experience in graduate education. She has presented her dissertation writing workshops and boot camps for MIT, Duke University, Howard University, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, and the Dissertation Institute, to name some.

She is the CEO of PhDCompletion.com, co-founder of the PROMISE Dissertation House, the on-campus dissertation coach at UMBC, and has authored four (4) books about Ph.D. completion (Mastering the Ph.D. Completion Process, Ph.D. Completion: If You Can Write a Master's Thesis You Can Write a Dissertation, Ph.D. Completion: Practical Steps to Selecting a Dissertation Topic and Ph.D. Completion: Methods Journal).

MATATU: A History of Popular Transportation in Kenya

Drive the streets of Nairobi, and you are sure to see many matatus—colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. This talk will focus on the various ways in which matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of post-colonial Kenya. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life—including, for example, rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, and popular culture—at once embodying Kenya’s staggering social problems as well as the bright promises of its future.
